It depends on your game, but I think it's cooler when each quest has a meaning and actually goes with the plot, if yours happens to have one.

Usually the best quests relate to characters, whether it be NPCs or (even better) your main characters. You could make a bunch of random 'fetch' or 'kill' quests, but they won't be as good as ones that develop your characters.

I've moved this thread to General Discussion (since this is not really about programs and utilities). Please be sure to post your threads in the correct forum next time. Thank you.

95+% of quests fall into one of these categories:

Collection: Go out and get these items (Variation: kill collection - bring me 20 pristine gnoll spleens). BioWare loves these.

Delivery (FedEx): Bring this there (the Lord of the Rings is one big FedEx quest).

Assassination: Kill this specific mob (variation: bring back his head). Any game with the BBEG at the end.

If you look around on the internet you can probably find the old (or even some new) random quest lists from the early days of D&D. Those can all be converted fairly well into a video game format.

You could always have the ol' chain quest gag...
Person A requests item 1
Find item 1, person B has it.. oh wait, she gave it to person C who has it, then gives it to you you to give back to person A who gives you item 2 to give to person C who gives you item 3 to give to _________ and so on and so fourth

"Person A has a package he wants to deliver to Person B.

Person B is not inside his home at the moment. You get the option to put the package in his mail slot.

When you return to Person A, person A is gone. An explosion is heard from Person Bs house.

Generally, side quests are not important to the main plot, but can be fun/useful for character development.

Now, side quests generally have these flavors:

Fetch Quests: Someone wants something, you get it for them. (These quests are useful for getting money and uncommon items such as Elixir-type items.)

Chain-of-Deals: Someone wants something from Bob, Bob wants something from Alice, Alice wants something from Someone, who doesn't want Alive to have his something without getting a better something from George, who in turn wants a potato. (These quests can be played for laughs, like the example. These are useful for rare items, armors, or weapons. This one is fairly common in LoZ, where you typically get a piece of heart from someone.)

Delivery: Someone wants Bob to have something, so Someone gives you that thing. Bob will either pay you for your troubles, or send you back to Someone.

These are the most basic side-quests.

Here is a good place to read about side quests and their variations: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SideQuest

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
