Another log, another day:

The game is coming along and I uploaded a better almost-full version of the prologue to the contest website:

http://contest.rpgmakerweb.com/game/view/id/134

The original post has been updated with the new link and has been revamped to look better and less amateur, hope people like it.

It has almost everything in it except the "wiring" to the last location and therefore the closing cliffhanger of the chapter. It is really strange to come close to such an achievement; this is the first thing I did that is close to completion and is played/seen by others.

Unfortunately I am not a great artist so I couldn't create a logo/icon for the game. Currently using none... I am mulling over ideas to fix that.

Finally, I am adding the last touches to the last area and continuing on development adding a bit more here and there to increase the content available, enhance it and make it better (read: fixing bugs, conversation trees, wiring of events and possible a task or two more for the player to do).

Hope you like the things you see in the game.

Good luck to everyone out there and hope everyone can finish on time with a great product. :D

We are approaching the end... less than 5 days remain (3 days if you leave out the last 2 for pure bugs murder fest).

Spent a good few hours creating one of the optional tasks' conversation tree (screenshot below), just to give you a rough idea at how much conversation branching can have in the game. That said, I had to cut down 2 outcomes of the total 5 because of time and complexity.

Which touches an important subject about optional questing. It is not easy to make an optional quest non-intrusive or look like a filler; what do you guys think? What were the best optional quests you have encountered? Why did you like it?

Some more screenshots featuring one of the "sneaking-heavy" parts of the game.

Finally we have a dungeon from the early part of the game... I tried to make it as creepy and daunting as possible (too hard to do with cute graphics though :p )

Current goal is to finish the optional tasks and polish the game some more then we begin bug hunting!

Hope you liked the screenshots and thank you for checking out the thread.

Well, that is it I guess... all good things must come to an end. But that doesn't really apply here...

While the competition ends in 4 days time, there is still the time where we play the game. Not to mention that I'd be more than willing to continue to develop this game and finish it if there is enough interest in it... so no... it doesn't end here... yet!

Without any further ado... the shiny link:

http://contest.rpgmakerweb.com/game/view/id/134

What I would ask you guys, if you don't mind to please spare a few moments to answer the below questions or report any bugs you may encounter, after playing the game:

- What was the most thing you liked in the game?

- In your opinion, what was the worst thing in the game?

- Was there something missing that you were expected/wanted to have and didn't find?

- Can you describe your experience (and feelings) while playing the game?

- Anything else you would like to say that I haven't asked about?

Thank you for sparing your time to play the game and check out the thread. It really helps that you have played the game (even if you didn't answer the questions, I still appreciate that you have taken the time to play).

Yes, I am really sorry about that. I did the most stupid thing ever... I deleted the old file so I can update the game file, instead of just renaming the uploaded file >.>

As for being busy, that is definitely understandable... we are in crunch time and everyone is working on their game. Can't ask anyone anything when I am in the same situation :)

Good luck, sir/ma'am.

ok stuck in the story and b4 pointing out specific issues/flaws what have you with a **** load of screen shots ill give my thoughts naturally this will and is not limited to

Spoilers so be advised. also note that overall this will be honest so...in my case it will be negative

Likes

-im sorry i got nothing : (

dislikes

-The ! stops you from moving

-very few objects or people available that you can interact with

-storys not really interesting(imo anyway)

-tho theres choices,i quickly felt forced like none of them mattered and would be lead to the same result.

-Male MC

-little lore/info on whats going on with your character

//

//

after playing for 34 minutes i got stuck between 2 things to do

find the guys daughter(which i already had with me)

and go to a bank which is unexplained far as im aware

whats going on with that.

why are those people patrolling?,are they possessed?,bandits?,who is there leader?,what is your purpose there?

Frankly after getting out of the starting building my interest personally dropped to nothing for this.

maybe having much smaller maps would of helped since theres nothing to interact with in the bulk of each area after starting building.

//

//

ok as for the questions

- What was the most thing you liked in the game?

umm...sitting in the chair in the basement of the inn and roleplaying being a successful business girl :3

- In your opinion, what was the worst thing in the game?

Lack of a story and that i did not actually feel like a toy o.o imean between appearance and reactions of others you'd think....OMFG a TALKING TOY!? ill...MAKE A FORTUNE SELLING YOU!

- Was there something missing that you were expected/wanted to have and didn't find?

-plot

-interaction with most readable objects

-quick answers and reactions from the towns folk as to whats going on

-lack of common sense(why is the Adult sitting there crying instead of looking for his kid if shes that important!?)

-accurate representation of what your character should be.

- Can you describe your experience (and feelings) while playing the game?

Terrible,it felt empty, slow paced.unexplained and just plain lacking in every aspect.

- Anything else you would like to say that I haven't asked about?

-Would personally suggest

-smaller maps

-more npcs that will note you being a living toy is alot more serious then being lazy and not getting your kid.

-able to read most if not all papers and tablets

-more explanation as to whats going on

First, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for taking the time to play the game and post your feedback. I really, really appreciate it.

Now to address your comments:

1- -The ! stops you from moving

That has been fixed, it no longer stops you. Why I did it like that was to make sure the player got the hint... I think I over achieved that.

-very few objects or people availble that you can interact with

The very few people, yes. First due to time constraints (otherwise I would have to spend a lot of time on making each NPC as an individual which is my goal), second the town is supposed to feel deserted... kind of like the game Bastion; the world is broken so not a lot of people around.

-storys not really interesting(imo anyway)

I see what you mean and I am sorry for that... unfortunately, editing that now, means making another game. I can do that however after the competition.

-tho theres choices,i quickly felt forced like none of them mattered and would be lead to the same result.

I am not sure why you felt that way... but to give a little spoiler. The task with the girl can be finished in 3 ways. The girl gets back to her father... the girl gets mad at you and never comes with you again and finally, you don't return her and don't do the quest (there is a 4th one but time restraints enforced I can't put it). Even when you return the girl... you get two endings; either he gives you money or he give you the Magical Crystal missing for it to power the Power Device in the Inn. Not finishing this quest makes it that you can't use that device in the Inn and have to hunt it in another location.

-Male MC

What does MC mean?

-little lore/info on whats going on with your character

Yes, I understand that there is little about the PC specifically and that is intentional... perhaps way more intentional than I wanted (I was going for the Half Life 2 feeling when you started the game and you practically knew nothing about what is going till the very end of the game). But the idea behind my logic is that curiosity would fuel you until you reach a certain part of the game (namely the Eastern part of Town) and you get a glimpse of yourself and later on in the game (basically right after the demo ends), you'll get a reveal about yourself and find out that it is all connected to you (but you aren't the center of it still -- I hate that).

after playing for 34 minutes i got stuck between 2 things to do

find the guys daughter(which i already had with me)

and go to a bank which is unexplained far as im aware

whats going on with that.

You don't really need to go to the bank if you went to the Inn (as mentioned by the broken toy at the beginning, the Power Device needed for the information item to reveal itself is located in 3 locations; The Inn, The Dinner and The Bank). If you went to the Inn it sends you to the crying man, if you went to the Bank you don't even need to pass by the crying man and you won't need him.

why are those people patrolling?,are they possessed?,bandits?,who is there leader?,what is your purpose there?

The reason should be revealed after you have finished the demo (well in once you start the quest that should start at the end of the demo).
The crying guy... I thought it is apparent he is really drunk, there are a lot of wine bottles everywhere in his tent and beer. In the girl's dialogue you'll see one of the options something along the lines of "your father is a drunkard"

OK, to address the other issues; with passability... unfortunately it is my first time ever using RPG Maker in any of its forms so it surprises me that sometimes these things happen. But I am fixing them as I find them... it used to be that you can pass over dirt too as well as all manners of cracks. But since you mentioned that, I have fixed both of them.

The picture not matching the girl's sprite, I have fixed that as well... due to the fact that I did a lot of copy and paste with the NPCs, I seem to have forgot some pictures unchanged.

The house with the bug that you couldn't enter has been fixed.

The girl shouting at you is intentional, more or less it meant that you failed the task. You have to find another way to look for the Magical Crystal or find another Power Device (hint: Bank or Dinner for Power Device, for Magical Crystal there is another one in the location with the girl but it is depleted and needs recharging).

Basically any building with a sign next to it you can enter from next to the sign (if you can't see the door), I thought the hint with the first building that had that trick was obvious... seems it isn't at all... I fixed it and now you can see the door (and the other door is still there, just in case).

The picture changing its sprite... that is something I tried to work around but I couldn't get a good work around for it. Unfortunately, using the "jumping girl" sprite would make her "turn" and in that case, it would change to a different sprite all together. Using Direction Fix would make the girl move in a very awkward way when she follows you around. So I resorted to a change of sprite that is close to her but the hair is different... if there was another way, I would have done it. I tried the character generation tool in RPGVX Ace, but it didn't have what I needed.

Some of the tablets and papers are there for decorations only. The only things that you'd interact with are the sparkly objects and the ones hinted by the exclamation mark; that is why I placed that system. This is only for the demo, but later on you can really interact with all other objects to conserve time and add more into the game.

As more people hinting at your a toy... it is a bit difficult to do that as the entire world is populated with toys :) . Everyone you see in front of you (men, women, girls, etc...) they are all toys. None of them are real people... so it won't be fitting to the story to refer to you as a toy or themselves as one (and some of them don't know that fact, yet). In fact one of the locations you enter and interact with an NPC that will literally throw a rage at you when you tell him he is a toy.

There are 2 questions, if you don't mind:

1- What happened before you got the girl to her father, I just played the game and it worked fine. Do you know how did you obtain the girl? How did you convince her to follow you? Also, did you talk to the father before getting the girl or did you get the girl first?

2- What is your contest entry? Or you don't have one? I didn't see any on your signature.

At the end, I have to really say THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your honesty. Don't get me wrong... I am not happy it is bad, but I am glad you were honest... fluff feedback won't get me anywhere. So again thank you very much and I don't really mind your honesty or frankness, go full force XD

off hand

in one of the pictures i circled the chair in the basement, the reason was because there were multiple ! around it yet i could not find anything there i  clicked on everything from every direction and nothing :3

replys to random

MC=shortcut for main character

i figured the town lacking people was intentional from the graves :3

i don't use the program to make games myself, but ive heard a quick fix for impassibly is just make a event and set it to same as player, then you cant go there anymore copy paste for quick fixes.

ohh that was a sign? thought was a random road block o.o either way didn't take me long to get in :3

hmm maybe im crazy but i thought one of the lines as soon as the game started mentioned not all items are shiny only story ones?

replies to questions

1.i went to the girl and took her jump rope then went strait to her dad(1st time talking to him).

he completely ignored the fact that she was right there and after going thru the choices that eventually would let me find her for him i talked to him again and he just kept saying please find her she is only ? years old

2.nope dont make games to busy and too much fun playing them :3 if i cant make something amazing and fully customized with sexy anime art i wouldn't bother :3

well,i wont say the game is bad, some people may enjoy it. it just did not fit my personal tastes, keep up the good work!

Thank you again for the reply Shayoko.

Oh, yes, I didn't address that... there is an item there and it shouldn't be empty. But you had to finish the toy's quest in the Inn (when you started out; the broken toy). That would make this item appear. It was a necessary thing to make sure that you finished this quest, otherwise you won't go far. But I adjusted that... now you can see it and interact with it even without the main quest.

Unfortunately the MC can't change due to the story and the ending.

Yes, you are right with the impassability issue. Problem is... I am still trying to adjust to the fact that the program can't tell that the dirt/crack is on a wall and therefore shouldn't be passed on... it is just a fact I have to care for from now on. But it is fixed now.

That is correct, the message says that the items of interest are sparkling while the major plot items will not be that way, but around it you'll see the "!" sign.

I see... I had something setup for that... but it didn't work out as it seems, anyway now it is fixed. He got a new pair of glasses and now he should see his daughter.

I understand... thank you very much, Shayoko your opinions and testing did help this project immensely :D . If you don't mind, I shall credit you for this ^_^

A new version is up fixing the bugs mentioned before and a little adjustment to the gameplay... not drastic but a few of the things has been catered for.

As always you can find the new version at http://contest.rpgmakerweb.com/game/view/id/134

Thank you very much.

RMMV
(link for info on why it's so short and all that jazz)

This game I summarize as “extremely poor introduction”. There is no context given, no goal and no setting. What am I doing? Why am I doing it? I’m a doll? Why?

I understand you’re supposedly in a mystery/”find out as you go” sort of game, but the drips of info come AFTER I’ve been locked in a messy house with a vague fetch quest. Too late to engage me, I was already bored of it.

While text isn’t that bad, mapping definitely needs work. Eventing is also shoddy with emoticons appearing at places randomly (I assume you have multiple copies o matter if the item in question has been picked yet), no visual cues, etc. Overall poor.

This falls squarely on the “not engaged, don’t care” game category. Introduction needs to be MUCH stronger to interest players.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
