Not sure if this is the right subforum, but...I read a post about accessing the classified section of the forums and it said that one reason it's not for new members is that new members were making "unreasonable requests" when dealing with the content providers and not understanding about the resources etc.

I was thinking about hiring someone to make me maps and some character art and maybe some sprites for my hobby game I drafted. What exactly are some of the things that I should be familiar with (regarding graphical things for example), so as to not make "unreasonable demands"? When using RPG maker I just used the RTP resources and learned and used event commands. I never had any aspirations to do more myself graphically, always thought about paying someone to do something small scale for me.

Is it like necessary to look more into how those sprite sheets work or understand something about tiles etc if I just want to buy some maps / resource? Can't I just ask someone for example: Please draw me a character image bust that fits in there, here's 50$ or whatever, thanks?

"As some of you have already noticed, the Commercial / Classifieds forums are now no longer visible to some people.

This part of the forum was created for the benefit of our members who wanted to pay for resources to be made or offer their skills to make resources for money, and to encourage them to make commercial games.

Over time, people who were not forum members began to abuse this provision. They saw it as a place for free advertising. Most of them posted and left, never returning to follow up on interest or update their portfolios. Many of them had no idea what RPG Maker was all about (we actually had people posting 3D resources as well as resources that would just not be used in an RPG Maker game). It was clear that they had no desire to be a part of the community and interact with our members. The other concern was that none of us knew anything about these people - we could not vouch for them, we had no recourse if they scammed someone. We decided that the forum would not be used for free advertising by people who wanted nothing to do with RPG Maker or the community any more."

That's a quote from @Shaz from some years ago. I don't think there's anything wrong with your request, just engage in a few conversations to get your 30 posts and you'll be fine.

As soon as you have access to the classified area you will be able to see offers of other board members as well as post a request for a specific resource.
I would propose to simply read the things that are offered to gain an idea about pricing. And read some of the requests to get an idea which information is required to undestand your demand.

You don't need a lot of specific knowledge but it helps if your explanation of what exactly you are looking for is as detailed as possible.

I'm not sure where you read about the "unreasonable requests" part, but yes, it does happen I suppose, and not always just from new members. We sometimes have people requesting a full game's worth of tile art or a completely custom battle system for $100 (as an example).

As ElCheffe said, once you have access, take some time to look through offer threads - this will give you an idea of the budget you will need. In addition, you may find you may not need to make a request at all as you might find an artist that suits your needs/style with a shop up.

If you do make a request, just make sure you know what you really need - you may want to use placeholders until later in development, in the event that you change your mind on some element. Be reasonable about your budget - don't try to underpay someone. And do your homework on who you hire. Someone who private messages you and doesn't have a shop open in our Classifieds is risky - there's a good chance it's a member we've banned in the past trying to circumvent that ban.

Okay. Thanks for the replies. I find it a bit strange and somehow "comical" that there are so many people trying to scam rpg maker hobbyist's pocket money. Must be a tough life out there.

Not necessarily.

A lot of the initial bunch was artists who had no idea what RPG Maker even was, and who posted their "portfolios" which were of no use to members here. It was just free advertising for them, and if Google saw a link back to their portfolio from our site, it would improve their rankings in Google results.

SOME people were (and still are) definitely out to take advantage of our members though, including other members, and they have been banned from the forum completely.

Just to point out the flip side of this, I've seen a coder mention it taking $200 of working hours to complete a custom plugin, and a user who said he'd spent over $1,000 on various assets for his game.

I don't know how common either of those scenarios are, but we're not necessarily talking about pocket change.

Sure, and depending on your age, situation, country, even losing 10$ might sting someone.
But if I ever made bigger purchases, I would pay it in installments. I wouldn't just give 500$ to some random dude on the internet, without seeing the work progressing. And I'd probably only use people who had recommendations.
Even my own "joke" project of 1 (self contained) episode, will need >1000$ of assets before it's finished. A lot of small maps, 5-10 character busts, 2D art work for a couple of key scenes and many "custom"/modified sprites. RIP my money ;_;

Hey I'll ask about it in this thread so as to not make too many threads.
So my question is that I like the tiles in this thread a lot:

I know what the terms of use say in that thread, that you need the license for RPG Maker MV to use them, which I did buy earlier from sale (but didn't use it back then). But now I made my game with RPG Maker MZ. I thought it would be okay to use the tiles then. But now when I was about to commission a map, the map maker guy made me aware about the fact that MZ wasn't even around when that thread was written. The maker of those tiles hasn't visited this forum since 2017. Can I assume it's okay to use the tiles in MZ if I own MV?

Yeah, I'll just tag the mods that have replied in this thread here, maybe you know? (Sorry if this is some bad practise...)

You don't need to tag mods for a question about using assets. You'd also do better starting a new thread about this, as this has nothing to do with the classified forum.

I have no idea what your map maker guy was smoking - if the terms of use say you need to own MV, then you need to own MV. That's because the tiles were made by editing MV tiles, so you need a license to use them.

If you do, you can use them in any RPG Maker you own, this has been true since the beginning of the series. You can use them in MZ as they are, edit them to be in VX, whatever.

Yes, please start your own thread next time, as your question is completely unrelated to the original. The easiest thing would be to ask in the thread you linked to. And no need to tag mods.

If you own MV, you can use those tiles in MZ. They are edits of MV tiles, and the terms of use for RPG Maker resources say you can use resources from one engine in another, as long as you own them both. Those terms will extend to edits, unless the artist has specifically said you can only use them in one engine.

Going to close this now

I've got good news and bad news. The good news is, there aren't any bad news to report. The bad news is, there aren't any good news to report.

Or as others say, yesterday was uneventful.

I am curious that can you "understand/get the point" about what does this place do generally?
