When I export the flame sprite sheet edit it and import it back into the game, there is all white around the flame and it doesn't have that cool glowing look it once had, is there any way to make it so when I import it back into my game it still has that glowing look without the white round it?

It must be saved as a transparant .png file, so you need a program that allows you to edit and save files like that. Photoshop works... I believe Gimp does too, and it's free to use.

When you reimported it, you probably forgot to add transparency (the white) and forgot the semi-transparency (loss of the cool glow).

When you say  transparency and semi-transparency do you mean Transparent color (L- Click) and Transparent color (R- Click) because I did that.

Eh, no idea how it works in Gimp, because I've never used it. But in Photoshop it doesn't require any tricks, just save it as a .png file and it should work.

When you say  transparency and semi-transparency do you mean Transparent color (L- Click) and Transparent color (R- Click) because I did that.
Then you probably clicked on the wrong pixels for those functions.

You should L-click on a pixel of that color that should be set as the transparent color (probably white in your case), and R-click on that color that should be used as the translucent color (probably one of the red/yellow pixels, I don't know which sprite you mean.

Pay attention: contrary to your sentence in the quote, the R-Click stands for translucent, not transparent (and is named as such in the resource manager, you either read it wrong or mistyped here)

KingDanner, please avoid double posting, as it is against the forum rules. You can review our forum rules here. Thank you.

If you're editing graphics, use a program that supports transparency like Photoshop or GIMP, and save as a PNG with no background.

Here is a image to give you ll a bit more insight into my problem.

I have been trying to edit a flame onto the top of a characters head but want to keep the cool see through glow look as the shown by the flame to the right. I used Gimp 2 as suggested to save in transparent png and this is the result as shown in the image on the left, it has a sort of white border round the flame on the top of his head and doesn't look too nice. I want the flame on his head to have that nice see through glow look as shown by the flame to the left. Any suggestions please?

It looks like you destroyed the transparency in GIMP when copying the two parts together, probably by copying a non-transparent part from one of the original pictures.

Better make a new picture with transparent background and then copy the two parts into that picture - in that case, the white frame will become visible in GIMP because it will cover the usually grey pattern that is used as a symbol for transparent. Then you have to erase those white parts in Gimp before saving as a transparent PNG.

I'm sorry but I don't totally understand. So I open a new picture in GIMP with a transparent background? Then copy and paste the flame and the head into this new picture in GIMP and edit it together in GIMP or edit in paint (as I did previous) into one image and copy and paste that image into GIMP?

And how do I go about erasing the white bits of the image in GIMP without erasing the glow of the flame altogether?

Open your character picture in GIMP and if the background is there, select it and delete it, so the background is transparent.

Then open your flame image.

Look at the image settings on both - I'm guessing one might be 16-bit and one might be 32-bit. If they are different, change the lowest one so it has the same setting as the highest one.

Then copy your flame image onto your character image and save.

When you import, you should not need to set transparent OR semi-transparent areas, because you've already done that in the image itself.

How do I check and change the the bits of the images please?

Shaz is referring to the number of color's available in those pictures - 16 Bit is usually called High-Color, 32-Bit is usually called True-color.

Somewhere in your graphics program you have a setting to change the color depth - usually between Bitmap, Greyscale, High-color or True-color, sometimes also 256-colors (that would be 8-Bit). How those options are named or where they are depends on which program you're using - simply check all menu options until you find something with such a color list and then change the setting there.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
