Hey all,

I've been recently going around testing RPGMaker XP demo games to get some inspiration. I noticed that on the computer I have RPGMaker XP installed on the games work fine. However if I try to play them on a computer that does not have RPGMaker XP installed I get an error related to missing DLL Libraries. Even though I'm running off these games' EXE files.

Is it because I'm play testing really old RPGMaker XP games? Is this an issue only with old RPGMaker XP games due to them pre-dating the Steam release which I'm assuming comes packed with the DLL files as part of the download/installation? I've not yet play tested RPGMaker XP games that are on steam to see if the same error occurs. My assumption is these particular games/demos are not made on the latest RPGMaker XP engine or they were made on an illegal port of it (hopefully not).

With the Steam bought version I have, I shouldn't have any issues related to user-end DLL errors like these older RPGMaker XP demos? Where it displays an error? Especially if I ever intended to go to distribute on itch.io or Steam Direct/Greenlight with it?

I'm going to do a test build of my game project tonight and bring it in to work to see if the standalone works without error - requiring some sort of game packer software to use additional installer information for DLL libraries. I'm hoping that is not the case.

Over the years, there have been updates to the Game.Exe. Demos I make use a Rgss104e.dll. That because I updated my copy of RPGMaker XP (hehe... forced after a HDD crash), otherwise I'd still be using an older version XP with the 102e.dll.

Newer versions of RPGMaker (ie 104e) would throw the RGSS dll file you are using into the root directory of your game, so encrypting/packaging your game will include the DLL with that game.

Best bet, the Game.Exe, the DLL, the .Proj and a line within the Game.ini need match.

SO... if you're test playing old RMXP games, copy your Game.Exe into the game, edit the INI file so it looks for the RGSS.dll you use, and copy your copy of the RGSS dll into the game's root directory. Copy the .proj file if you're editing it too.

Thanks DerVVulfman this is very helpful.

So for Steam RPGMaker XP I shouldn't have to worry about similar issues with any game I make? The user/player won't need to download anything extra in order to run a standalone created with it?

As long as you supply ALL the graphics and audio that is meant to be with your game. :p Some people forget to include resources they used from the RTP.

Of course, always give the final product a test run before distribution.

Hey guys I actually received the same DLL error when playing one of the later RPGMaker XP games , on my work computer (Windows 7)

"RPG Maker XP - KNight-Blade -Howling Of Kerberos"

Located here:
http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/download/additional/sample-games

I really hope we don't have to supply DLL's or direct players to download/install this library file in order to play our games?

*COUGH* Later? That's one of the old old old original sample games when Protexis was around. And they were around in 2006. Pity they don't have the Japanese classic, "White Ties" too. But that was never translated into English.

Open the Game.Ini file and look at what DLL it uses.

Thanks Slimmmeiske2 and that resource helped me out a lot. Noticed some of those games even made in 2007 work and it appears to just be the INI setup and the inclusion of the missing DLL packed with the game(s).

As long as you supply ALL the graphics and audio that is meant to be with your game. :p Some people forget to include resources they used from the RTP.
Thanks DerVVulfman, I noticed once i removed the standard from the INI file it requested some of the vanilla/default audio that was not custom.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
