I'm surprised that Soul Eater hasn't been mentioned (maybe I'm the only one that likes it?) it has hilarious situations and an...okay plot line (it's at least interesting) although the plot is actually one of the weaker points of Soul Eater, what I love about it is it's characters and the fact that it doesn't go on too long like other shounen

anime like Bleach and Naruto (Gurren Lagann is also pretty good for similar reasons).

For more darker and serious anime that hasn't been mentioned I've seen this one called Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom that is really good. It got boring for me at some points; although, it is overall worth watching and ends pretty well (which is something that a LOT of anime fail at). Another one is Boku no Pico (I'm kidding) When They Cry - Higurashi (or Higurashi no Naku Koro ni for those that can pronounce it) which has some messed up plot lines that keep you thrilled, although the only bad thing I can say about it is that it is basically a bunch of short stories composed of the same characters (and what seems like parallel universes).

And I'll put a few others that haven't been mentioned or just not that much:

Baccano

Welcome to the NHK!

Another (I don't really like it, but a lot of people do)

Darker than Black

Great Teacher Onizuka

...

...

...

That's actually all I have that hasn't been mentioned at all/very much.

Mm, two I can suggest are Le Portrait de Petit Cossette which is pretty freaking weird, but great..though it's only a short 3 episode ova series. And, Dot Hack//SIGN which is a prequel to the original four ps2 games.

Oh, also Code Geass. "All hail Lelouch!" Lol~ ;3

If you like something sad, dramatic, and funny when it needs to be, you should watch Angel Beats (Warning: this is really sad. and mild depression is sure to follow!)

And something really worth watching (RPG Related and extremely funny!), try watching Hataraku Maou-Sama! It's about a demon overlord who retreats to another world where magic is limited and the hero, Emilia, chases after him into the world where they continue to fight with eachother as mortals! (My avatar is one of my favorite characters in the anime!)

Viper's Creed, Soredemo Machi wa mawatteiru, Twin Spica (a lot of people doesn't likes this one because they wanted "something" to happen, but I think I actually like it the way it is), The Secret of the Blue Water, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, Berserk, Bastard!, Basilisk, NGE lol (anyone knows it), Desert Punk!, Gantz, Beck, Kuro-chan (x'D), Ninku.

I'm not a anime fan either, not anymore I say (I considered myself otaku some years ago), but I like to watch stuff from time to time,

You should try :

-Witch hunter robin , produced buy the same person behind ergo proxy .

- Tokyo magnitude 8.0 , if you like sad animes then you MUSt give it a try .

- Over man king gainer , one of my best mecha animes .

-Yondemasuyo azazel san , black humour everywhere !

Aaaaand if you're into dark themed stories with black humour (like myself :3 ) then you should try Dorohedoro it's a manga ( no anime adaptation so far ) but I highly recommend it

Serial Experiments: Lain is my all-time favorite anime. It's amazing. If you want something "similar", I can recommend a few:

Boogiepop Phantom

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magika (don't let the "magical girl" theme fool you; this is clever, dark and has an amazing story)

Paranoia Agent

Texhnolyze

All of these have a similar "feel" to Lain in one way or another, and both Boogiepop and Texhnolyze share the same character artist. These are all dark but inspiring series.

And, if you haven't seen them, both season of Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex are highly recommended, simply because they're not only a beauty to behold, but philosophical and thought provoking.

if you gonna watch Lain you gotta watch it more than once and pay attention to it. Its a anime you have to pay attention and ask questions about it. Its super good but man it can get confusing the first time around.

Yes, but that's not what this thread is about... The OP asked about anime recommendations based on his favorite anime, which included Lain.

Although it's not a "darker," anime, my personal favorite is Hetalia. One of the darker ones that I really like is called "Souleater."

And also the politically correct term for "anime people," is "otaku." :D

N-no it's not.  Otaku means someone who's obsessed to the point of being creepy, and it's not a term that's limited to Anime, it's anything someone can be obsessed with.  In the US it's come to mean "someone who's really into Japanese things", but even by that definition you're going to exclude some of the people who've been replying to this thread.

That's why I say. Once upon a time I considered myself an otaku, after learning the actual meaning. In a manga which I don't remember, there was a character who was constantly called astronomy otaku, which means someone obsessed to astronomy. Game otaku, anime/manga otaku... sports, films, clothes...

An anime otaku for example not only watches a lot of anime, but also buys ANY merchandise, to any extent. I have some figurines, like my personal proudness the EVA-01 and a Sachiel 8DDD (I want to be an angel!). But I still don't waste ALL my money on that. So I'm not an otaku, I just like Sachiel.

Okay, there goes more recommendations, let's see... how about movies? I recommended Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind before so it's film time!

- Any Gibli Studios film (Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Princess Monoke, Steam Boy)

- Paprika

- Summer Wars

- Asura (it's dark xD, but its drawings are a little weird, if you care about that)

- Akira

- Ninja Scroll

- Memories

- Escaflowne (also its series)

And another seinen series, Planetes. By now one of my favourites. It's a sci-fi space slice of life. Also as someone mentioned, Initial D First to Fourth Stage, and Fullmetal Panic (and Trigun for mother's sake! someone mentioned it too, how could I forget that awesome opening song????). SAIKANO. xxxHolic, Eureka Seven, Final Fantasy Unlimited :'D.

I'll leave it there,

I help run a department at a major anime convention and I would be offended to be called an otaku honestly. Otaku doesn't mean what western anime fans think really, its... its creepy and over the top.

Personally, I actually haven't watched any anime in probably a year or two... I like it, but I'm busy and have TONS of different interests. People who obsess so completely over one thing just bother me. Unless its an obsession with RPG maker that forces you to buy every resource pack, because more sales makes me look good :p .

I don't know how I forgot about soul eater and samurai 7. I feel ashamed.

@Delsh

Samurai X is Rurouni Kenshin. Samurai X is the original name for it if I remember right.

Works the opposite way~<3. Rurouni Kenshin->Japanese. Samurai X->random english name (why "X"? just for the scar on Kenshin's cheek??).

Trust and Betrayal was the only part of Rurouni Kenshin I really liked. It was really really good though.

oh cool, So toonami did use the original name. curse you justdubs! I guess x for his cheek sounds right, but that is a bit lame of a way to make a title. I liked the title Rurouni Kenshin better anyway. thanks for the heads up

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
How many parameters is 'too many'??
