Basically, a dungeon crawl is a game where you enter a big, usually huge dungeon, filled with monsters, traps and treasure.

Grinding isn't usually required in a dungeon crawl, because you fight so many monsters and get experience points doing it, just making your way through a few corridors, that leveling up and getting money and loot is relatively smooth.

You can either have a megadungeon such as rogue type games (Nightmare of Druaga, Sword of the Stars the Pit), or various small to medium dungeons.

Regards!

You should probably play Lufia 2 if you want the best example of a Dungeon Crawler-*shot by Indrah*

Perhaps the term "Dungeon-Crawler"-Type game is best explained by what isn't inside those games: A big story or complex quests.

In a dungeon crawler, the game focuses on exploring dungeons, fighting monsters and collecting treasures to the point of limiting background story (or giving only a cliche background) and NPC interactions.

Yes, there are a few exceptions - but I wouldn't call those "pure" crawlers, but mixed genre games.

I can't believe anyone didn't mention Diablo which is basically THE dungeon crawler, imo.

I agree, pretty weird considering it set up the standards for a lot of other clones.... I mean games! ;)

Etrian Odyssey would classify as a dungeon crawler as well. Just ONE big dungeon crawl... difference is it also doubles as a massive grindfest.

Diablo series? I thought it was an Action RPG.

Anyway, do u think it's a good idea to combine traditional RPG battle system (turn based or ATB) and dungeon-crawling genre?

I think he was talking about the first Diablo game not the series as a whole...

As for the battle system, most DC that I've seen are Action Battles... but you're free to try to use the menu based battles

Diablo, the series is a dungeon runner.

Unless Diablo 3 changed its core design philosophy, I would say the entire series qualify to the point that they're pretty much the standard for what dungeon runners are supposed to be.

Furthermore, action RPG is not a genre that excludes a game from being a dungeon runner.

Dungeon running is a concept that describes the nature of adventuring and the setting within a game, not the combat mechanics.

In Diablo, especially the first, and the second, the entire point of the game is essentially dungeon running.

You gear up, and run around in dungeons, avoiding traps, killing mobs and gathering items. That's basically it.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
