Is there anywhere I can learn how to script?

Or a topic that shows me a full on tutorial on everything I need to know? I don't really like the battle system either.

You'll need to know a lot more than a single topic can teach you. Scripting in RPGMaker is based off of the language Ruby. Once you learn that, you're going to need to learn how to apply it to RPG maker through RGSS3. Overall its a very long process. I'd suggest you look in the scripting forums here for a place to start, but it's not going to be easy.

There is too much to know that you can't really find a tutorial that covers ALL... look for some Ruby guidebook on the net to start

I've moved this thread to Learning Ruby and RGSS. Please be sure to post your threads in the correct forum next time. Thank you.

Please edit your original post (use full editor) and make the topic title more meaningful.

There are entire textbooks dedicated to programming in ruby, all of which you probably "need" to know depending on what you want to do.

Anything I've written so far means nothing if what you "need to know" is related to something that I'm not writing about.

And redoing the battle system is NOT a task that should be at the top of your list when you are just learning scripting :D That would have to be about the most difficult script to mod of all of them.

I'm just learning right now.  Here's a few sites for you.

http://mislav.uniqpath.com/poignant-guide/

http://www.tutorialspoint.com/ruby/index.htm

http://ruby.learncodethehardway.org/book/

There are many other free resources available online as well as online training courses and purchasable books.  Just gotta look around.  Those three though are very heavy reading so it should take you a while.  The third one is more of a dictionary though than anything.

And what Shaz said...DO NOT attempt a battle system as your first project.  Maybe a clock system that doesn't really do anything (at first), or something like that.

As always, start slowly and work your way up to bigger things.  That second link there does a great job of doing just that too.  The first one jumps right in more or less but it explains everything in a silly, yet understandable way.  Good luck!

LOL when people were talking about some of their first script projects in another thread, I refrained from posting that my first script was a quest journal that worked but was too hard for most people to use, but my second was RSSBS.  :p

Obviously I wasn't just learning scripting (only Ruby and RGSS3).  I guess my point is that you could start with a battle system mod if you wanted.  It doesn't have to be a good mod LOL.  It actually can take very little code to put simple actors on the screen as I believe is shown in one of the early battle mods for ACE.  Even the first spin of RSSBS was fairly short and easy before it got fancy and full of options.

Anyway, I also wanted to add that due to the large number of requests of this nature that I've seen, I'm working on a fairly detailed "how to get started" article which will provide the necessary Ruby crash course and then introduce some of the most common RGSS3 scripting principles.  After that I may add more articles or turn it into a discussion thread (Shaz, please PM me with your suggestions on how best to handle this).  I'm about 60% complete with the first article now, so in a day or so I'd imagine I'll have it ready to post.

@WNxTyr4el: you can expect a larger, more in-depth (but hopefully as entertaining) version of the mail I sent you.
