I have a few questions about moderators. Likely a global mod, admin, or former moderator (Like @Shaz) could answer me best.
  1. What are the things that a moderator can do? I know some of them, but likely not everything.
    1. Something I am wanting to know: can moderators post in closed threads?
  2. What is the difference between a moderator and a global moderator? Like, what can global mods do that moderators cannot?
  3. How do you become a global mod from a moderator?

1) Lots of things - approve threads, move threads, close threads, etc., and yes, post in closed threads.
2.) A moderator is usually assigned a specific section. For example, I started only modding in the Resource section.
3) Typically after a period of time, a moderator is "promoted" to global moderator.

1. Moderators can move, split, merge, approve and hide threads (or posts). They can see threads that are waiting for moderation, as well as reports. They can ban members or simply remove their ability to post for a period of time (not sure if that's all moderators or just global moderators). Yes, moderators can post in closed threads.
2. 'Regular' moderators are assigned to specific forums, and only have moderator access within that forum. Global moderators can moderate in any forum. Admins can do even more.
3. If/when there is a need for extra moderators, existing moderators and admins will look at who are the regular, helpful members of the forum, and will send an invitation to the best candidate(s). Generally, if you ask to become a moderator, the answer will be no.

Ninja'd! (and sorry - I misread Q3 and thought you were asking how to become a moderator, which is usually what people are interested in)

Thanks, both of you. I really had the wrong idea about mods v.s. global mods :D
