Bgillisp I am going to put a single tree on water in the ocean in my game now just for the lulz. Right out in the middle of nowhere, just this one tree.

Funny thing is, I kinda already did this. It wasn't a tree in the middle of the water, but it was fun with mismatched tiles:

But, back on topic, you do have me wondering how hard it would be to write an overland map generator (at least a bare bones one that says stuff like "City here!" "Mountain here!". I code some in my free time, so maybe I'll dabble in this once my game is done.

But it still sucks if people are just voting against it because they don't want to deal with competition flooding the market.

It says to me they don't have a lot of faith in their product or creative abilities.
I don't think it has anything to do with not wanting to deal with competition or not having faith in their own product. There are too many people out there who are automatically against any RM game out there, simply because of the reputation from people rushing out really bad games. It's a mindset to protect the overall reputation of RM, not fear of competition.

Yeah man, its the economics of fear. Essentially, they are worried about their "brand" being damaged and so they are trying to create a bottleneck.

This is the thing though, at the end of the day, you don't think all hamburgers are horrible just because you ate a White Castle Burger one time.

The idea that "all RPG MAKER MV games are ****" doesn't mean they are. There are workarounds. For instance, I mentioned this earlier, but if you are ever going to be releasing your game commercially, you should completely abandon the MV style and art assets. Even a poor visual has more personality than the stock images and style. People will recognize the same faces and think its just an MV game. However, having original content will draw the eye.

People don't think MV games are ****, just the same way they don't think all hamburgers are ****, they just look at it and if it looks like a white castle burger they are probably going to opt out.

Nothing is ever going to change the stigma. It doesnt help that a lot of the most famous games are light novels or hentai games either. As its my opinion that does more damage to the brand. But if you make a good game, a game with a strong identity, then you will draw attention and people will want to play it.

So people need to focus more on making their own product the best it can be and less on policing what others should or should not do or want. Of course, anyone can vote anyway they like, but if their vote is PURELY to stand in someone else's way... well, that kind of gate guarding in a creative medium serves no one. Its poor form.

Unfortunately, there is a group of quite vocal people out there who DO think all RM made games are bad. Just look through Steam reviews of RM games.

Nevertheless, we are getting quite off topic and it's a discussion for another thread.

I voted yes just to help the original poster, while I understand peoples concern with the reputation (often negative one) associated with RPG maker nothing will ever really repair that. It's become to deeply ingrained into the public mindset. The best RPG maker games are often the ones people don't know are made with RPG maker, or in other words ones that would never use the base graphic or random maps (or the core battle system or class system, etc.) to begin with. Sorry, if that sounds like a bit of a downer, good even great games are certainly possible with rpg maker it just takes time and work, but if the original poster is like me and simply makes games for fun or to impress family and friends then random maps really isn't a big deal.

Any updates, RetroBoy? I'm scouting the map generator plug-ins for a little commercial game.

Ok so I see that topic late... But a random map generating isn't liked? If it can work Ing this is awesome... Mostly for tiles, i already rng my map when i can.. Mostly collectibles and monster. But if a plugin could generate tile and base map (with region) with a galv set and a common event called, you can generate infinite map. For me i look that with big interests. You can have lighter game but infinite map like a Diablo 2...

Basically minecraft work like this. I make a game for mobile a plugin like it could help not having ton of map... I am trying to see if I can handle it with galv. Long work but it should work. (Creating road as event then spawn them one by one next to each other... I set variable moving by one some time It go up or down but limited to fit with map height. After that all decoration can spawn. And so on the collectible, chest, monster...)
As i already have fence, tree, flower as event, i just have to make road and water.

I think this would be a good addition but I don't see it happening. If they were going to put a lot of effort into making procedural maps work well, they could instead put that effort into other big tasks that are arguably more important like generating more poses for the character generator (sitting, sleeping, kneeling, head down etc). Both your suggestion and the the character poses thing I threw out are pretty major features that if implemented, would almost certainly be additions saved for the next generation RPG Maker and used as a big selling point to convince their loyal customer base to hand over their cash for the new shiny (which is fine, and a smart business move on their part).

The main interest concern mobile export, wich is the device I target with my current project...
Less map, mean lighter game.... So be able to have Infinite beautiful map is quite interesting..

First try ... I think it's a good start

Doesn't RPG Maker DS do this already, where it generates the map for you? I'd imagine it'd be difficult to create such a generator but if it's already been done then I may be wrong?

Also that video is interesting, you were able to get the path done right and a couple of trees. :)

Rpg maker can create dungeon and basic maze. Also it is different map. (if no mistake) But what i do is an in-game generator

Do anyone know a way/plugin switching tile A in game?? (I am creating water as character img, but it is a pain compared to the ability to use the autotile A)
water.png

So finally, everything work nice! i just have some setting to change, optimize all the process, and fix one little bug. lol. But i finally managed the basic (still some little fix to do, but 1/2 it spawn nice).
In order to have a simple way to process, i wanted to know if there is a way to get the map size in a variable?

Reminds me of the world generator of dwarf fortress. The effects of each step of the process influenced the next...

Mountains formed to be eroded by rivers..forests formed in areas with good water access. Deserts developed where water was lacking...
Each action affected the next.. Such a beautiful thing.

I would love a random generator for the editor and I'll tell you why. i use paid tile-set for my game and most of the inspiration i get is from using pre-fab maps. but i refuse the use the default rtp so i make the random generator map then simply replace it with my paid tile-set. re-paint it where needed. and i'm done. having a random generator would help me out. i done that with the pre-loaded maps too but their not alot of them. random generator would be useful

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
