Ok so what im trying to do is make a book that you can read out of your inventory, kind of like in Skyrim or Oblivion. Not only am i using this for storyline stuff, but also for quest log type things.

Basically what i want to happen is this:

Talk to a person that gives the player a quest.

If the player accepts the quest i want a book/scroll to be given to them with the name of the quest.

The player can look at the book/scroll from their inventory to read a small description of the quest.

When quest is completed book dissapears from inventory.

THe giving and taking aaway of the item i can do, thats simple. But how do i make a book/scroll readable from the inventory?

This is what I would do personally:

First of all, set up a Common Event that will do all your texty stuff for this book and sidequest.

Second, in your book item, under the effects tab:

Go to Other (the fourth tab) and set it up as your Common Event.

It'll simply look something like this to give you an idea.

Hope this helps!

More or less, I believe there are certain things that are restricted, like random variable conditions, self switches... (or I just have no idea what I am doing)...

But that aside, setting up Text is relatively the same with Common Events and Regular Events.

To make it readable, just make a Common Event with the text, name it so you know what CE it is, go to the item, set Consume as No, set CE with the text as the Effect of the item, and voiala!

...
AKA: EliteZeon's post which I didn't bother to read until after I was done writing my own...

And which I didn't post until after you replied to him and him to you...man, how awkward...

Mostly, but there are differences:

Common events are working independently of any map, regular events don't exist outside the map they're created on.

Common events have neither self-switches nor page conditions/multiple pages to switch between them. That sometimes requires a different logic design.

God you guys are awesome. My mind is rattling with ideas from this. I was trying to use a script to make a quest log last night but i just couldnt get the hang of it, so i thought of doing this book system instead. This way as long as you have the book in your inventory you know you havnt completed the quest yet and can open it and remind yourself what it was, where to turn it in, so on and so forth. Plus its unique in a way, i havnt seen anyone do exactly this yet.

Why would you use the common script over a event that as the book image as the event option? so the event text would be on the book not needed to be sat there using up all your common event slots?
