I just had a crazy idea, and I was wondering if this would be possible to do. Would it be possible for me to build a set of materials in 3d studio or photoshop, then use them in a VX Ace - made game? I've been toying with the idea of doing a photo-realistic graphics pack. I know true 3d is out of the question, I just want to know if pseudo-3d materials could be used.

The high fantasy pack is made this way I think - using 3d models.

As long as the images are in the proper format and are as big (dimensional-wise) as any sprite/battler sheet I don't see why not! Like whitesphere said, the HF packs do this.  Just... be sure everything matches well enough! :)

I wouldn't be able to do character or monster models very well. Wish I could, though. How big do the tilesets need to be?

The tilesets have fixed sizes - that is one problem as soon as you make larger objects like done in the HF-Packs. Games with the HF packs need more specialised tilesets because you can no longer fit everything needed into a few general tilesets (instead of one "interior" tileset, you'll probably need one tileset for shops, one for crafthalls, one for library and so on).

If you don't want to purchase the HF packs to see how it was handles, check the freebies here:

http://www.pioneervalleygames.com/free-resources.html

and check the demo pictures on the resource pack list there as well

I don't know the exact dimensions... I'm sorry. :(

This is more or less what I'm doing with my own game (link's in my sig'), though I don't build tilesets but instead use full assets such as houses, barriers, towers, walls, trees, etc. that I render in their own finished picture used as a parallax. But I think it is possible to use them as separate elements onto a manually edited parallax: this would be more convenient for the vast majority of people here, indeed...

If this can help you, free prebuild models are available in places such as 3dxtras.com, Archive3d.net or The3dstudio.com: I use these regularly to avoid losing too much time modeling mundane stuff and/or to get separate assets that I combine in order to get more complex pieces – materials and lighting still have to be done but it's a time saver.

Good luck with your project: eager to see the result of your work  :)

I'm not really familiar with Parallax models, so the only way I can think of doing this is tilesets. Otherwise, I would build entire buildings in 3d. It's what I went to college to learn. :)

Edit: made this myself a few days ago:

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
How many parameters is 'too many'??
