I can't recommend The Second Apocalypse series, by R. Scott Bakker highly enough. The first trilogy: The Prince of Nothing (book one, The Darkness That Comes Before)

It starts out with a dark fantasy/Crusades-esque backdrop, but there is a bit of sci-fi in it. Its themes and philosophy aren't quite as subtle as the ones explored by George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series (which HBO viewers know of as "The books that Game of Thrones is based off of,") but aren't often found in a Fantasy setting.

AHAHAHAH I MISSED ANSWERING THIS QUESTION AGES AGO, BUT:

The translation of The Odyssey I was referring to was Stanley Lombardo's! I found it super easy to read and easily understood what was going on, something that, uh... certain translations neglect to do!

Also I can't remember if I plugged this and I am too lazy to go back and check, but if you're into mysteries, Ian Rankin is pretty rad! He writes about this Glaswegian detective named John Rebus, and his stories are pretty cool.

You also can never go wrong with Agatha Christie. She's an oldie but a goodie! SHE'S OUTSOLD THE BIBLE, YO (I think? She might be in second behind the bible, too. I don't recall. OTL)

John Green is also pretty good! His characters can sometimes leave a little (a lot) to be desired, but his actual writing is beautiful. Seriously, read his stuff just for the writing, if you have to!

...I haven't done much reading lately, so, uh... I don't really have any thing new to recommend! I've got a Kathy Reich's book on my dressing table I haven't started yet (I AM WATCHING BONES AND THIS IS WHAT BONES WAS BASED ON AND IT IS SET IN QUEBEC WHICH IS REALLY COOL), but I'll get back to y'all when I've finished it. >w<d

So a friend recently told me about this site: http://www.scribd.com

I may be late to the game, but there are tons of free books on there that you can download in text or pdf form. I've been filling my tablet with tons of books that aren't even available through the nook or kindle apps. It's an awesome resource. Though I really prefer being able to hold a book to reading it on a tablet, you can't beat free.

The Hunger Games series and Redwall were the only books I actually ever enjoyed and wanted to keep reading. I'm not easily entertained by books, so those were pretty damn good!

Cloud of Sparrows and it's prequel, Autumn Bridge by Takashi Matsuoka are pretty fun reads. Think James Clavell's "Shogun" but actually enjoyable to read, and without several hundred pages of unnecessary prose.

The Hunger Games series was my favorite. I couldn't stop reading it. I also love the Inheritance series (only have read Eragon). I also loved Heroes of Olymous series. I ahve only read The lost Hero and The Son of Neptune books of the series. :)

I just got into The Devouring. It is a really good series, if you don't mind a bit of horror in it. Its really hard to explain the horror in the book its that kind that you have to read it yourself.

I know this is classic but you could try and check "Dragon Lance" series ^_^, it would also help you build inspiration on making another RPG game :)

The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks. A fantastically-written fantasy.

Can't agree with Way of Shadows more. One of my favorite series.

If you want to miss a lot of sleep pick up The Dresden Files, I believe its up to book 13 now. I read quick so I finish a 360-ish page book in about 2-3 hours so for me they are quick reads.

Also I think Mistborn was mentioned? Well I'm near the end of the first book and I have to say they are fantastic if a bit slow starting out. Worth it though.

I've been reading The Last Apprentice Series by Joseph Delaney recently (just started the 5th book).

Its about Spooks, people who fight the Dark such as rogue witches, boggarts, and other evil things in olden days England.  I like how witches and boggarts for example aren't all bad or all good.  Each could be an enemy or ally to young Tom Ward as he apprentices to be a Spook.

I really like the emphasis on the importance of knowledge and discipline.  It is obviously for young adults, but I like young adult books.  The books remind me of the show Supernatural at times and Harry Potter at other times.  Good stuff.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
