My bro recently developed an interest in RPG games (I don't know what game he got ahold of. It looks like a Five Nights at Freddy's with turn based fighting or something), and he's asked me to let him play more.

He's 12, his whole gaming life, admittedly because of my bad big brotherhood showing him games above his age level, mostly consists of shooter games, Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Smash Bros.

So it's quite a boon for him to show interest in RPGs.

Can you guys recommend some RPG games for me to shove into his new computer so he can try them out.

Preferably good RPG Maker games too, because I'd like him to also develop an appreciation for indie games as he does, compared to if I gave him a AAA RPG game which may end up building a reluctance to playing indie games, a little like how I turned out.

And it may be a bit shameless to ask, but if as possible as can be, if they were free too, just in case if I invested money into trying to build a preference for RPG games and in the end it turned out he doesn't like them :(

Thanks in advance, guys!

Skyborn. I can't recommend this game enough, I DEEPLY enjoyed it. The story and characters are really well written, and there's a pretty sweet class system that can branch out in different ways as the game progresses. The threat system is particularly neat and adds a lot of tactical planning when fighting monsters. The music is also fantastic.

I originally got the game as a humble bundle inclusion (When I bought my ex her own copy of VX Ace, I think), and wound up trying it out when my internet was down after moving. I marathoned the thing and was NOT BORED ONCE.

So there's my suggestion.

Good RM Games

Antago-...

ohhh...

ohhh...

I see...I see...

-

2000: A Blurred Line

2003: Hero's Realm

VX: The Cartographer, Avarice

ACE: Princess Princess, Remnants of Isolation, Cope Island, Silver Town, The Magi Chronicles, Subterranean Starfield.

I mostly played ACE games though, so my knowledge is pretty limited but these are solid ones.

Ib is a really cool but somewhat spooky game. If he can take some jumpscares and somewhat intense ambience, this is my favourite RM game.

Castle Chase, Halloween Bash and Halloween Flop; all made by wondrous Makio and Racheal, cute and funny games.

Yume Nikki only if he likes WEIRD experiences, and has some patience. This one is NOT so much a game as a trip; and especially it's a great way to see how far some people can make take the program.

Oh! Ko! is a very cute and simple game.

Tinkles Must Die! For a solid rpg maker experience. It's a good example of a first game project that comes out WELL (not perfect or excellent, but way better than most people manage on their first try).

And eh, I won't individually plug every single one of our games, but they're nice too! You can find them in my sig, we've made a bunch if he wants to check them out.

Kindred Saga, Demon Hunter: Seeker of Power, Romancing Walker, Sunset over Imdahl, A Blurred Line, FF: Endless Nova and Homework Salesman.

By that order. Just trust me on this one. He doesn't have to finish it.

As for RPG games that are not RM...

FF7, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth and, Brave Fencer Musashi on the top of my head are pretty approachable. If he is still into RPGs, he can try Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume or Final Fantasy Tactics. Legend of Legaia and A Thousand Swords are fun for other reasons. I'm not sure if he'll like them.

Good grief, if non-Rm games are open, put dang Chrono Trigger and FF6 in there! XD

Those two are pretty friggin badass snes games that havent aged that badly (heck, I'm pretty sure FF7's overworld sprites look worse than pixel games). The Snes and the PS1 overall ahve really kickass RPG libraries that are piss easy to emulate on all pcs.

Part of the reason I didn't recommend FF6 is that you can actually get lost in the overworld at first. And judging by the games he used to play, he wants something actiony. FF7 had that strong intro all the same to build up adrenaline. (Not saying FF6's FMV sequence in PSX bad, it's just there's a difference in terms of pacing).

Ahh I see. /offtopic/ I actually always had a bit of a problem with FF7 all around. Maybe it's just the setting that was never my thing (despite the game being objectively really good and me ultimately enjoying it). /offtopic/

Action rpgs may be a thing then? Seiken Densetsu 3 for the snes and...uuhh..I've forgot. I liked Threads of Fate for the PS1.

And if you own a PS2 or your pc can emulate it, Tales of the Abyss is my favourite of the series (and has awesome characters) and the combat is action oriented~

Until the major plot point, the game world is quite "hallway-ish" so to say in FFVI. Overworld tunnels you to certain places without much leeway to go to wrong place.

Thanks, guys!

Woah, so many of these games require RTP, it was quite a hassle to sift through those I could install on his comp.

So far I haven't had any good response from him yet, so keep it coming guys!

Considering you only have to install the ACE RTP once, I fail to see the problem.

You don't even have to link it to the games or anything, just run the installer and that's it. The games do all the work.

It's the ones that require the XP and 2000 RTP's that I'm having trouble with. The VX and VX Ace ones I'm doing fine.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
