Like MV before, sadly MZ often messes up your files.
I'm one who makes backup often but this is never going to be a perfect system in itself.

I just got MZ blanking most of my data files.
So instead of having content, when you click on them, they are blank.
Is there a reason why this is happening and is there a way to recover it?
It plagued absolutely all the files in the data folder except the maps themselves (so, all the database).

:dizzy::dizzy::dizzy:

EDIT: one thing worth noting is that the *.json files do not indicate 0 in filesize, they all have their normal filesize, even though when you click on them, the content is blank. I wonder if this is enough to give me hope and if so, what to do? :|

I'd be trying to figure out why your files are getting messed up. Do you have your project saved somewhere that it's being synced to an online repository? That is the most frequent messer-upper-of-files that I'm aware of.

What is the "normal" filesize? Even a JSON file with no data would have the surrounding object tags, so just a few bytes. Are you trying to open them in a plain text editor?

When you open your game in the editor and go to the database, are the entries all gone, in all the tabs?

Nope, not at all.
Plus it's the same folder as usual, that I have used over months now.

Some are over 400Ko and more importantly, same filesize as the working version that I have as backup.
I open them in notepad, any alternatives?

Can't open it

I can also attach 2 copies of one of the *.json files if you'd like.
The working one from the backup, and the damaged one from the non working project.

EDIT:
Here is for instance the blank file for Skills, same filesize as the working one (which isn't blank) but hopelessly blank.

it once happened to me >.<.... and i have no backup at that time...
after that i always look for script / plugins that auto backup data folder...

for the json files... instead of notepad you could use other tools like sublime text 3.

hope you recover your work.

Have you checked the file I uploaded (bottom of my previous message)?
What would you do with it (if anything)?
All the files are now like that, correct filesize, but no content.

i open the file in the sublime text... the file is already corrupted beyond repair...
the correct one should be a JSON format
Code:
[
null,
{this is the content of skill 1 data},
{this is the content of skill 2 data},
]
like that...

but all the data become 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000.
to be exact it's 24703 lines of 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000

so i guess no hope for repair... something replace the json file with 0 until it reach the same size as the old files... maybe replacing all character with 0's.

i see this issues in internet not specifically with RM
like this which happen in blender settings json file:
it happen when he updates blender and he is on windows 10... do you use win10?

for recovering the old data... it's not possible... like above solution... the json can only be used again by pasting old data (from other source like backups)...

Yup win10.
I gathered it was beyond repair when I tried it in a json editor.
Only solution, backup every day, then.
Thanks for your reply.

both using win 10 might be the clue for the developer about this issue...
btw you might want to check on this plugins:

i think it backup the data folder each time you run the playtest button.

i used something like that back in ACE and in MV. did not try that MZ version yet though.
hope this help and sorry for your loss...

Thank you. I'll try to pay attention now. I mean, even more attention.

Finally! I've been puzzling over why it wasn't working for two days now. Turns out all of my calculations were correct, I just forgot to give some events hitboxes. :kaoswt: Now my randomly generated maps check for collision errors, and move stuff around in real time if they finds any. :LZSexcite:
