A new tale in an old universe... one originally crafted by TECMO!

I wanted to start my own RPG, and I've had a lot of experience drafting, crafting, and creating RPGs using RPG Maker software. After much deliberation, I wanted to try my hand at it again, and I am determined to make this game not only a reality, but also a big hit. I'm looking for several people to start an entirely new, entirely self-owned world based off of TECMO's previous SNES RPG, Secret of the Stars, or Aqutallion in original Japanese.

This project will be a huge undertaking by everyone involved, so I want to lay this out right now: If you get involved with the Actos Games team, we will be using Kickstarter to fund our development and access of platforms. First of which will be PC (Steam), then Android, iOS, and various other platforms such as OUYA.

Currently, our team needs:


  • Music/Sound Designers
  • Scripter/programmers
  • Very talented mappers
  • Several sprite artist/graphic artists



I've already contacted several large indie video game developers, and they're quite excited with the project. A very talented artist, Jose Ramos, is aboard the team and ready to go! We even have a high-profile composer potentially on the team, wanting to craft masterpieces on his very first game!

Story

Destiny of the Stars is based off of the original game, Secret of the Stars. On the world of Terra, lives have been changed and altered since the war against the artificial human known as Homunculus. The Aqutallions, heroes banded together that are the children of the previous band of heroes, defeated the menace, with the help of the Kustera; a group banded together that assisted the Aqutallions.

Over a thousand years have passed, and now, in the Year PD 1024, forces work themselves against the forces of good to create chaos on Terra once more. The Republic of Kustera, founded not long after the death of Homunculus, has control of much of the world, but for the greater good - all the major cities and townships are under this nation’s flag - and for good reason: The Kustera never wanted any sort of evil to raise its head again. The lineage of the Aqutallions have faded into history - no one is exactly sure who has the bloodline or not - and no one has deemed them necessary for centuries.

One such man still believes they exist though, and his name is David Kustera VIII. Son of the current Regent David Kustera VII, he is intrigued with the legends and tales of the past, even going so far as to defy his father and adventure on his own to look for artifacts of the past, to learn more. His current mission: to find the lost Star of Actos, said to be tied to the Aqutallions in the closest of ways.

This journey leads him to the village of New Pennon, a town famous for its unique school of swordsmen: those who can call upon the elements themselves onto their blades.

These “Elementblades” are users of the Element Spectrum: able to control the forces of Fire, Ice, Earth, and Wind onto their weapons. One such man David meets is the most prominent yet reclusive member of the school: Max Solarm, notorious for being able to control multiple forces instead of one or two. The meeting of these two will change the very fate of the world of Terra, perhaps even the landscape of the universe itself.

Along the way, they will journey together and unravel the mysteries of the past, uncover the treachery of the present, and find the safety of the future.

Characters




Max Solarm - Age: 25



One of the two main characters, Max has been training since he was a little boy how to manipulate the Element Spectrum onto his weapons; the process fascinates him and he feels an affinity towards the different emotions he gets from each element. Owns a greatsword carved with runes to empower his attacks with the elements, and an unusual necklace which was given to him at birth. He is reclusive, stoic, and emotionless, usually. When an element is aligned with him, his mood and emotions change based on whatever is being channeled at the time.

David Kustera VIII - Age: 28



The other of the two main characters, David is from the long line of Kustera who helped the Aqutallions back in the Homunculus War, long long ago. In the modern era so far, his curiosity of the past has gotten him into trouble with the local towns - he often digs up ruins just for his passion of finding any details about the previous engagements of his predecessors. He is brash, reckless, and totally ambitious - he wants nothing less than the total truth about what happened. His major faults is that he is steadfast to a point, and will not back down, even if it costs him his life. Loyalty to his friends, through and through.

I know! But the fact that you know about it means that it has a good chance of people checking it out to see if the sequel will be better. Any publicity is good publicity. :p

Wait, you're starting a Kickstarter for a fan game? Is that even legal?

Actually the rights and trademarks to the original game have long since expired, and we have acquired them for the purpose of making new games and actually being able to Kickstarter and everything! It was an amazing opportunity. :)

I'm lost on how one could 'acquire' a copyright, but whatever. I dunno, if you were shooting for funding I'd just expected something a little more... Ambitious? That's just me though. Rock on and I wish for you all nothing but the best.

Oh it's quite ambitious - we have a world class concept artist doing the new designs for the characters, music people who have worked in the industry before - so the game will undoubtedly be AAA once it's all put together. We're shooting for all new sounds, all new sprites... it's a big undertaking.

Err, samples please? What's currently shown doesn't really boast as much. It may help potential recruits to see all this stuff. Do forgive the apprehension, a lot of promises are made around here and several including my own are ever followed through. It'd be reassuring to see actual potential, to say the least.

Unfortunately I don't have any yet - the kickstarter page will go up as we have some sample art and music from our team to give out. We're working furiously hard on getting things together, though, and I will definitely update this thread once the assets become available.

I'm really glad there's interest though - I plan on marketing it to major websites as a sequel to that RPG nobody liked... and it turns out mine is way better than that, haha!

I have never heard of it, actually. Ambition's alway great though- especially when it can be backed up. I do look forward to catching future updates!

Thanks sabao, we really appreciate it! I know a lot of people haven't heard of it, but I'm hoping that the fact that it's a sequel to a SNES game (bringing back nostalgia) and the fact that the sequel will be so much better than the original that people will really enjoy the idea of a JRPG on Steam by western developers.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
