What is Project Fate?

Project Fate is a multi-phase development process for my original game “Fate of The Chosen”. This will be a special type of project that involves crowd-source development by approved users.

How it works?

Rather than recruiting a handful of people to tackle each aspect of game design such as a programmer, composer, animator, sprite artist and so on, then, managing the team and all of the aspects at once, I’m going to recruit 1 (or at the most, 2) individual(s) for one aspect of the development process. Then, I and the recruited individual(s) will work on the selected aspect until completion. After this phase, the next aspect of the design process will begin.

This is my attempt at creating a new process of development; although, this is my first attempt at such a process and I assume others have done this before. Hopefully, this will make creating a game less stressful than it currently is!

What is crowd-source development?

This is a new approach to developing a game by having multiple people contribute when they can. This means that any work started by the original user may be finished by a new user if the original user can no longer be a part of the project. This is designed to keep the project in development if anyone leaves at any time. Essentially, this means that work created and not finished by you, may more than likely be finished by another user.  Please note that you will still receive credit for your work, but there will be a * to indicate that it has by completed by another individual. I have tried to cover potential roadblocks such as users leaving the project and anything unfinished so hopefully this helps in the long run.

What are the multiple phases?

Phase 1: Level Design

Phase 2: Battle System Design

Phase 3: Core Features Design

Phase 4: Event Design

Phase 5: Scripting Design

Phase 6: Character Design

Phase 7: Cutscene Design

Phase 8: Testing

Phase 9: Soundtrack Development

Phase 10: Testing

Phase 11: To Be Determined…

What will be the start of Project Fate?

As noted above, the start of production will begin with Phase 1: Level Design.

Phase 1: Level Design - Details

This means that at this time, only the creation of the Levels within the game will be developed. No characters, no scripting, no sound or anything else. Everything provided within VX Ace’s RTP will be used as placeholders until original content is created by the recruited individuals. For example, the character images, sprites, sound and whatever else will only be used to test the created levels.

Alpha Phase 1

This will represent the process in which the levels aren't created, but, discussed so the recruited individual understands in-depth, what I’m looking for in a finished level. This will be in the form of various emails, pre-recorded PowerPoint presentations, Skype sessions (chat and video) and other forms of communication.

Beta Phase 1

This will represent the process in which the discussions aspect is over and when the official creation of the levels begins. This means that the recruited individual fully understands what I’m looking for in each level and begins to create them via their own software and resources.

Omega Phase 1

This will represent the implementation and testing of the created levels using the VX Ace RTP resources as placeholders. Once the levels have been deemed playable by my standards, the end of Phase 1 will be revealed and the start of Phase 2 will be announced!

Prerequisites for recruitment into Project Fate

1. RPG Maker VX Ace – The game will only be created using this software. This also means you must have a purchased license of the software. I’m not responsible for providing one to you. I’m assuming you already have it if you’re interested in this project anyways.

2. Skype with Membership Account – It’s FREE and will be used for sessions such as chat and video presentations! Get Started Here: https://login.skype.com/account/signup-form

3. Google Hangouts with Membership Account – It’s also FREE and an alternative to Skype. I’m adding this in so collaboration with Google Drive will be easier.

4. Google Drive with Membership Account – It’s FREE and will be used to contain all of the game’s assets, everything! Also, you’ll have access to the assets created by others when needed. Get Started Here: http://www.google.com/drive/about.html

5. OpenOffice Suite – FREE alternative to Microsoft Office. This will be used by you to view my written documents. The Suite includes an alternative to Word, Excel and PowerPoint all of which I currently use to write my documents. Although I have OpenOffice as well as MS Office, I simply use MS Office out of habit. If you don’t need OpenOffice because you already have MS Office, that’s fine with me, but, you’ll need one of these two Suites to view my written documents. Anyways, get started here: http://www.openoffice.org/download/

6. Nitro PDF Reader – This is a FREE alternative to Adobe Reader (which is also free). This will be used to view any PDF’s I create (which are basically documents converted into PDF format).

     a. If you want Nitro PDF Reader, get started here: http://www.nitroreader.com/download/

     b. If you want Adobe Viewer, get started here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/

7. Email Account – Preferably Gmail as it will make collaboration with Google Drive and Google Hangouts easier.

Requirements for applying to Project Fate

1. Signature of the Terms of Development 30 Day Probation Period.

2. Picture of you with your signed Terms of Development. Think of this as a Reddit’s AMA requirement. Example found here: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/18bhme/im_bill_gates_cochair_of_the_bill_melinda_gates/#content

3. Confirmation and proof of the above collaboration tools.

4. Examples of work.

Before discussing the Terms of Development

This game is intended to be both a non-commercial and commercial product (i.e. free version and paid version). Also, this game will be published under my company’s division Cloudscape Games. Cloudscape Games is a division of my startup company Cloudscape Productions LLC. I have been developing and strategizing my company for over 3 years and currently have a crowdfunding campaign to fund the development of my company’s core product.

More information about this campaign and my company can be found here: http://igg.me/at/CloudscapeUniverseCampaign/x/3089870

During the entire process of creating this game, it will be done for FREE, but, in the hopes that the game will make a profit, if any. This means that I won’t be getting paid until you do. Also, it means that everything I’m doing is for free and done so of my own free time, but with the hope that a profit is made in the future. With that said, it should be explicitly stated that you will be working for free, but, in the hopes that the game will make a profit. In the event that the game is released in its commercial version, pre-determined portions of the profits received will be distributed to those officially credited with the creation of the game. This will be further explained in the Terms of Development. Last but not least, I am striving to be a fair and honest game developer so I’m putting myself on the line with this project.

All the developers will have access to the VX Ace file at some point and all content will be contained in Google Drive.

Who am I looking for right now?

Since Phase 1 is Level Design, I’m currently looking for:

1) Mappers – You will artistically design my concept levels. I have created basic layouts of the various levels using Microsoft Excel, so when development is started, you’ll have a blueprint of the levels involved.

2) Original Tilesets – Because I’m looking for someone to create my playable levels, I will need the artwork to be of your own design. I believe it’s fine for you to have revised the RTP Tilesets into your own vision so I don’t have an issue with using custom Tilesets. It just needs to be yours and not ripped from someone else or taken from some other resource.

3) On the topic of using another user’s Tilesets – I would like to request a written statement by the owner that it is ok to use their Tilesets to create my levels. This is so they will be credited in the event of product launch. Also, it’ll inform me that they know their artwork is going to be used for my project and are OK with it. If they are a mapper themselves or want to be involved with the project, they’ll have to apply accordingly.

So that’s basically it at this time. I simply need a mapper who can convert my blueprints into playable levels. We’re going to start off with:

1. Hero’s Village

2. Hero’s Home

3. 2nd Character’s Home

Once the overall look is achieved, we’ll move on to:

1. Areas to and from villages

2. Continents

3. Other Villages

4. Other Homes

How many positions are available?

There will be 1 position to fill at this time. If the person leaves at some point, then another individual will be recruited to continue where the first one left off.

This could be considered a crowd-source project as I know people will not be able to provide their full attention. This is why the Terms of Development are in place so you are aware that whatever isn't finished may be finished by another user.

Don’t worry; you will always receive credit for your work.

How to apply?

Please send me a Private Message confirming your intent to be a part of the project. At that time, I will reply with a copy of the Terms of Development – 30 Day Probation Period. Once or if you have agreed to the terms stated, you’ll be provided with access to the documents of the game, including the game doc.

Just an FYI…

This isn't some super awesome game that will wow everyone. I’m simply trying to create a game to present to the public. Also, anything is subject to change; I’m just one person currently attempting to make a game. I want to tell a story and at this time, the method of doing so is through a game! I’m sorry for the lack of screenshots but I am literally not an artist. I can draw what would be considered 2nd grader art which parents place on the refrigerator just to make the kid feel better, but secretly don’t like it! I could attempt to put together various royalty free images (and use my limited Photoshop skills) in an attempt to demonstrate my game, but I feel it would be tacky and off-putting.

About the game…

The game is currently called Fate of The Chosen. It is a turn-based RPG set in an original universe with various mythologies created by me. It is a simple concept with a seemingly simple story, but I want to focus on the personalities of the characters involved. This will be demonstrated by their opinions towards their teammates, cultures, factions any everything they encounter during their journey. I want to display growth between each of the characters in relation to what they experience. Basically, it may seem ordinary, but I want to create depth in the ever-growing world and the lives of various individuals within it.

OK, at the request of a user's reply below, I'll be providing the game doc. It'll be in PDF and Secured. I've omitted a few story details but other than that, everything I've prepped for the game is within the doc...with the exception of the Excel file which contains the layouts of the world.

Enjoy!

As much as I admire the thought put into planning the whole development process, I do believe it will serve you better if you didn't hold out on disclosing details about the project so any potential contributors have an idea of what you're going for, and for their benefit, know if their talents and/or artistic sensibilities would be a good fit for the project.

As for the process, I've found it difficult working with larger teams of total strangers with limited commitment to the project. Real life commitments, time zone differences and the like almost always guarantees a project hits more lulls during development (Say, if mapper is ready to build a town but tile artist isn't done with the tiles, complicated further when the tiles become ready and by then the mapper finds himself tied up to different matters that need attending to).

Another concern is when a team member suddenly has to drop out of a project. Given the project in question is pushing for all-original resources, losing an artist in the middle of production is all the more difficult. A replacement is not only necessary, but the artist must also be able to emulate the style their predecessor started with, lest all the previous work goes to waste or if the team decides to compromise at the cost of consistency in quality.

It happens a lot. I've been in my share of teams that fizzled out because of it. I do wish you the best of luck, however, and if the plan does come up as appealing I'd love to contribute what I can.

Hey ya'll, I'm noticing that there's been over a hundred views but 2 replies (including myself). I'm not complaining, I'm just wondering if I'm being too strict? I honestly tried to take the perspective of being fair for the both of us. I hope I didn't scare anyone off haha.

Maybe you were slightly strict on the terms, but I have to admire your professionalism(That Terms of Development requirement confuses me a bit). Just curious, the Level designers have to have their own tile sets? I know you do allow using other users tile sets but most of the time those tile sets are under a creative commons license. I'm asking because I'm interested in working as a level designer for this project, I prefer parallax mapping as you can see in the spoiler.  :

(I know the cacti aren't the same but I wanted to add some slight variety).

Hey Ruiran,

Thanks for replying to my post and thanks for complementing my professionalism! I hoped it would be taken positively...

The reason why I'm so concerned about material (art, code, sprites, etc.) is because I don't want to encounter legal issues at anytime. I want everyone to know that what is created by them will always be credited to them, but there may be events where unfinished materials will need to be completed by another person, at which case two (or more) people will be credited with the particular material piece. I want to feature works by others, not claim it as my own original work, even though it is used in a original game. I believe this will help those who want to get into the game industry because they will be credited with a published title.

Also, is it my full intention to distribute a paid version of the game. With that said, I feel like there should be terms and conditions so the people who have displayed a lot of effort will get paid (actively contribute); rather than those who simply complete something small like a single graphic, or jumps into development every few months (or late in the cycle) and things like that. Basically, I want make the serious individuals eligible for profit returns while allowing the not-serious individuals to take part in development too (although they know they won't be eligible for any profit returns). Of course, this is assuming that there is a profit lol.

With that said, I welcome any level designers! I understand that there is play-ability vs. artistic beauty with level design, but for my game, I do want to emphasize artistic beauty, but make it playable too lol. For example, some levels will be a little basic in design as displayed by the way a characters' home looks in one continent, but a new character's home will be much more pleasing to the eye in another continent. Essentially, everything will give a vibe unless otherwise stated lol.

Last but not least, please know that I'm taking this seriously because I don't want the possible event (no matter how small) of facing legal issues 5 - 10yrs from now when the game is launched, yet someone decides that they are due funds for any reason. I have attempted to prevent this possible event from happening as best as I could by stating everything now, rather than later...

If you're still interested, please send me a PM so I can provide you with the Terms and Conditions file!

Thanks again for replying!

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
How many parameters is 'too many'??
