What do you mean "reduce actor window size so that it is the same size as selected box"?

Based on what it sounds like your asking, something like this right?
Code:
#==============================================================================
# ** Window_MenuStatus
#------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# This window displays party member status on the menu screen.
#==============================================================================

class Window_MenuStatus < Window_Selectable
  #--------------------------------------------------------------------------
  # * Get Window Height
  #--------------------------------------------------------------------------
  def window_height
    fitting_height(4)
  end
  #--------------------------------------------------------------------------
  # * Get Item Height
  #--------------------------------------------------------------------------
  def item_height
    (height - standard_padding * 2)
  end
end
That will make the window exactly one actor's worth of info high.

Ruby:
#==============================================================================
# ** SceneManager
#------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# This module manages scene transitions. For example, it can handle
# hierarchical structures such as calling the item screen from the main menu
# or returning from the item screen to the main menu.
#==============================================================================

module SceneManager
  #--------------------------------------------------------------------------
  # * Create Snapshot to Use as Background
  #--------------------------------------------------------------------------
  def self.snapshot_for_background
    @background_bitmap.dispose if @background_bitmap
    @background_bitmap = Graphics.snap_to_bitmap
  end
end
This removes the blur applied to map backgrounds in the menu.

Like how dark are we talking? Like pitch black in your screenshot?
Here's another snip of code that lets you modify the color overlay. By default it's (16, 16, 16, 128)
I have it configured to be a solid black so no image really shows but you can modify it however you want.
Ruby:
#==============================================================================
# ** Scene_MenuBase
#------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# This class performs basic processing related to the menu screen.
#==============================================================================

# COLOR [RED GREEN BLUE ALPHA]
# *ALPHA = TRANSPARENCY (0 IS TRANSPARENT - 255 IS SOLID)
COLOR = [0, 0, 0, 255]

# No need to modify anything below.
#------------------------------------------------------------------------------

class Scene_MenuBase < Scene_Base
  #--------------------------------------------------------------------------
  # * Create Background
  #--------------------------------------------------------------------------
  alias xane_change_background_aliased create_background
  def create_background
    xane_change_background_aliased
    @background_sprite.color.set(*COLOR)
  end
end
