How do I make my game so if the player has a save file, they will not be able to start a new game? I know forbidding players to start a new game if they have a save file might sound like a jerk move, but I want my players to have to live with their decisions in my game, kind of like they would in this world.

Just a point of clarification. Does this mean that they will never, under any circumstances whatsoever, be able to start a new game? i.e. I finish your game and I won't be able to replay it in a year's time if the mood takes me?

I have to say what you propose is akin to the save system Starflight used in the 80's. You may want to look up how well that went over with players before doing this (spoiler alert: It didn't. Players hated it).

i personally wont recommond removing new game though, even when hey have a save file,

like you have 2 - 3 children that plays, each with their own save file to continue on.

Also i like to play the game from the beginning to see what the decissions do, and when etc.
if you remove it, you might lose players that try the game and not able to save and forced to
delete the save file so they can start over.

maybe you have a light and dark side, and you want to play both sides to see whats effects they take.

I should think about it carefully though if you take this approach.

Okay, no. You will be able to start a new game. However, you will have to delete a save file first.

Just be aware that players will still probably figure out (thanks to the internet or a bit of detective work) how to delete their save data directly if they really want to start over, and you really can't prevent them from deleting files from their own computer. That said...yeah, think very carefully about doing this. What if the player gets saved into a broken/unwinnable situation? What if they want to replay your game? I mean sure, it's your game and all, but this just seems like a really bad idea that won't go over well.

@Aesica : That was exactly the problem Starflight had with their save method. They saved everything to the main disc, and if you got saved into an unwinnable situation the only way to fix that was to...buy the game again. Or have made a backup of your discs.

Needless to say it did not go over well, even with the developers posting a warning to make a backup of the discs and only play on the backups.

As for the question asked, you can actually do what you want with restricting the game to one save slot only (and I think there are many plug-ins that let you decide how many save slots you want, I just don't have links to them as I mainly use ACE). No need to force them to delete it if they hit restart, as if they do hit restart they either go to ironman the game or overrite the save once they decide to save.

I'm not limiting my game to just one save file, so how about this, I make the game like Defenders of Oasis. Instead of starting a new game, you select a file out of three with which to start the game. You can still start a new game on files that you haven't selected yet. However, the only way to start a new game on a file that already has save data is to delete said file. Does DreamX's Disable New Game plugin allow that, as well?

Yes, the only way to start a new game is to delete an old file.

with 2 or 3 save files = better, which i know alot of metroid and zelda, you can start a new game by deleting the
the save file and start again, its much saver though.
