You can rent a Wii? O_O

Rent, because you pay nothing for it and can test it out?

I own a Wii. It's okay, but I still enjoy my PS2 and PC games more than on the Wii.

I'd suggest buying a 3DS, since you can have Wii features on the WiiU and Wii's online component is useless now.

If you're going to rent, why rent an older console?  IMO buying is better, you enjoy it for however long you want and if you want to be done with it you can sell it.

Sell it at the right place, or someone might rip you off. ><

Without knowing what you like and dislike, this is a difficult thing to help you with.

Buy a 3DS. I owned both - my Wii basically sat there and gathered dust once I finished the trauma center games that came out on it. It's good for party games, but its choices for solo games are limited and anything where you were FORCED to play with the motion controls just left me embarrassed to play when by myself. :/ (also hurt my wrists - which as an artist, i did not like) plus i found the always on and updating nature of it very annoying and turned it off constantly because it was interfearing with other wireless devices.

3DS has good battery life and is portable, a larger library of games, a larger variety of games. I got way more value out of this unit than most others I've owned. (Great for road trips! Or when tou want to drool on your pillow and fall asleep part way through a game)

Personal reasons, but to me 3DS is better in by a long shot.

Buy the 3DS. The Wii is an alright console... but the 3DS just offers more, to put simply.

It is hard to advise you when you have told us nothing about your gaming habits or favorite games.
I'm gonna agree with the majority here and say, buy the NEW 3DS. It has tons of good games and also a lot of ports from the Wii (for instance, the amazing Xenoblade for the Wii got a port for the "NEW 3DS"). But first you should put in the work, go through lists of the top wii or 3ds games and see what interest you the most.

Yeah, the way I do it is I look at the list of games for whatever console I want to buy to see if there's anything I want to play. There wouldn't be any point in getting it if you won't play anything in it anyways.

I personally would go with the 3DS, especially since there's not really going to be anymore games

coming out for the Wii, while the 3DS already has an impressive library of games with many more

to be released in the future.

3DS all the way. The Wii line is done. I would have said to grab Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii if you got it, but Xenoblade is already on NEW 3DS. Also, you can play it on the NEW 3DS and see if you like the Xenoblade series and maybe pick up Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Wii U this winter. If that turns out to be the case, you can play any Wii games you missed on it, anyway.

See, the reason why I ask is I'm curious about some of the games. I could rent a Wii for $14/week and hire some games from the local Blockbuster. That would be a lot cheaper and I don't have a lot of room. I'd like to play the Wii but I don't want to keep one. I understand the 3DS is better, but once I buy one, I'm afraid that I'm going to end up splurging out on games. Being an art student, New Art Academy appeals to me. But after that, it's just going to go from there LoL

Whaaa? Didn't expect to hear that in 2015. They're surely BINOs (Blockbusters In Name Only), there's only one in all of Florida (it closed in May) and a few in Texas, with the rest in Alaska, but wow.

Y-You still have Blockbusters near you??? What magical land do you live in? There's no way to rent games here ;o;

Could you buy a 3DS and rent games for it at the relic of a begotten time, Blockboster?

If there's games on the Wii you want to play though, and you have the ability to rent the system and the games - that's a good way to go. I don't find the Wii has much survivability in a household compared to most systems. So renting one is certainly, IMO, the better choice.

So, you're saying DVD retnal is extinct in the USA? We still have DVD rental shops where I come from. Admittedly, my Blcokbuster isn't as big as it used to be and there's Blockbuster vending machines dotted about the place, but there's also Civic Video, which is three times the size and it's got more games too.

Sure, people can just download stuff, but not everyone has a fast broadband connection. External mediums, like discs and tapes, will never be extinct. There will always be a need for them. Besides, why wait for a download when you can pop down and rent it quickly? LoL

I'm in Canada and yes, DVD rental is dead. At least in the area I am in. Blockbusters closed. The straggler store I knew of in my old city went out of business. I miss being able to rent stuff ;o;

I've seen those rental machines in stores (not typically branded with blockbuster) but I've never seen games in them before. ;(

Currently in Canada myself, and I've seen less blockbuster (aka none) then Dr.Pepper (only seen it at ONE restaurant so far at a Harvery's). But where I live (near DC), Redbox is doing decently and they DO have game rentals... but everyone I know has Netflix or something so I don't see it going for much longer.

And for the people suggesting the NEW 3DS... as good of a game Xenoblade is, I Can't say paying an extra $100 on a newer version of the console and another $50 on the game itself is worth it. Older 3DS models are at good pricing and Xenoblade is the only NEW 3DS exclusive I can think of and dose not look nearly as nice as the original.

But that aside, what games do you have in mind for either console?

Top games.

If I bought a 3DS, I'd get:

1) New Art Academy (because I'm an art student. Hey, can you use it as a proper art tool and upload your drawings to a PC?)

2) NES Classics Remix (I like my retro)

3) Steel Diver

4) Monster Hunter 4

5) Starfox or a similar shooter

6) Phantasy Star Zero (if I'm lucky enough to find a used copy)

on the Wii, I'm curious about:

1) House of the Dead 2 & 3

2) Monster Hunter Tri

3) Legend of Zelda: TP

4) Sonic Colors

5) Mario Galaxy

Right now, the 2DS is $150, only 60% of the cost of a newer model of 3DS. I can live without the 3D effect.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
