I would say that you should get the 3DS. So many amazing games like: Mario Kart 7, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (this is a big one). There is also my favorite RPG series playable on the 3DS, the Mario and Luigi series. You can play all of them except for Superstar Saga on it, with Paper Jam soon to be released. Many games on it support online multiplayer as well. The only real issue is the L and R buttons, however, if you were to get a 2DS, that is not a problem, as they seem as durable as the ones on the Wii U Gamepad, and those are strong. However, the 2DS does feel a bit wierd to hold, but if you can get used to it and don't need the 3D, then the 2DS is just fine.

I would say don't get the Wii unless you want to play the old games on it. The Mario Galaxy series and Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword are the 2 games I can say you need a Wii for. For the most part, the Wii is dead, as Nintendo did discontinue the online service for it. However, if you softmod your Wii, you can get something that will let you play online again. Another reason for the Wii is to play mods for games such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. You can get custom content for each, even whole mod packs for them!

So, if you want to play it without modding or anything, 3DS is your option. However, if you want to play user-created mods for games, go for the Wii.

$14/week rent? For about two weeks' rent I could buy a used Wii in excellent condition with six months warranty from the store. Are you planning on keeping the Wii for less than two weeks?

What SamJones said. Also, it's amusing to see people getting nostalgic about Blockbuster considering they killed off all the independent rental outlets (at least here in the UK) :D

I didnt even know there was a "rent a wii" thing. We dont have that where I'm from. You know, regardless of the price, I'd say go for Wii if youre in a situation where you can sit and use the console freely. Like if you owned a small TV and played in your room.

But let's say your roomates/family argues over TV use, then get the 3DS and play in your room.

It's just a matter of efficiency, I guess.

With many great Wii games, there is a better 3DS alternative. For instance, there is Mario Kart 7 instead of Mario Kart Wii. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS rather than Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D or Majora's Mask 3D over Skyward Sword. And also, the Wii is outdated by a few years, while the 3DS is still getting great games, such as Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam that will come out in some time.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
