Hello everybody!

I recently bought RPG Maker VX Ace, and am working with a friend to make a game.  Right now, I want to know more or less what I can do.

I am a newbie to programming in its entirety, and while learning, staring at code trying to figure it out... does not work.  I learn fast, but I only just started learning.  So rather than search and try to filter out information from code itself, which I am not capable of yet, I want to ask directly...

What is RGSS3's capabilities for programming?  What all does it effect, what all can it edit, what can it do, and most important, what CAN'T it do?  I plan to learn it in depth, and toy around, but I want to know what I am not able to do, so I know where I should focus.  This is my first project, and sort of a motivational step for me to truly jump into game programming as a whole, since its a nice, laid-out system already.

Any information, tips, or... anything would be GREATLY appreciated.

it can modify most of the game, just not the hidden classes (which are Sprite, Window etc) so there are things that cannot be done like extending the game window above 640x480 (thanks to Zalerinian for pointing out, I didn't realized that I placed 544x416 here) (unless you hack the the dll which is not legal)...

it can also use other DLLs too so you can make some other things that aren't normally available to RGSS3//Ruby...

I've moved this thread to RGSSx Script Support. Please be sure to post your threads in the correct forum next time. Thank you.

Also, please don't center your text like that - it's incredibly difficult to read.

Ah, sorry.  New to the forum, did not realize it was the wrong place for it.  Thanks.

As for the text, edited.  Apologies for that.

It's a kind of a funny one, since you're not actually asking for help with a script. But I think it belongs in scripting more than general support. Thanks for fixing the text :)

I'd say it can pretty much do 95% of anything that's do-able on a two-dimensonal plane. That 5% usually consists of hardware or software issues like making MIDI stuff up-to-par with OGG in terms of functionality. (Unless you can code a ruby-work-around for it maybe) or the screen resolution thing mentioned.

People have done things like Mode7, Isometric Views and First-person-view Dungeon-crawling styles. Things that give games a 3D-look but still 2D sprites and graphics.

This is incorrect. You may resize the game's resolution using Graphics.resize_screen(width, height) to change the size. The screen may not exceed 640x480. Higher values will be set to 640x480. The only problem with resizing the screen is that none of the default battle backgrounds are made for this size. Extending the screen beyond this size would require modification of the system's DLL file, which is indeed illegal.

@Shaz - how about Learning RGSSX? since it's kind of leaning towards learning RGSS3...

anyway, most of it's limitations aren't really game-breaking (unless you think that the screen resolution thing is)... :)

@Zalerinian - oh yes, thanks for pointing that out... accidentally placed 544x416... XD

As you have already found out, scripting in RM is a full programming language, capable of exchanging almost the entire engine - there are scripts out there that change RM into action-RPGs, Jump'n Run Platformers or other things.
But for the same reason, scripting is NOT neccessary to make a game in RM - most people start making their first game without any scripts, using only events and basic capacities of the default engine - and then later start adding small, existing scripts from the master script list for functions that are not provided by the default engine.

If you want to look at some sample games or what the master script list provides, those are linked in my starting point topic (see signature)

I too am a newbie to RPG Maker, but have done lots of graphic and development coding for programs and the web. This is completely different and while looking for a simple way to make a store to buy and sell goods, I came across this link someone else posted (sorry for no credit as I have no idea where I found it). Check it out and you will also be amazed at how much you can do with this game. In 1 evening, I set up a 4 level dungeon and a full town (using templates provided by the maker) and I learned a great deal in that short amount of time.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
