Hello there. I would like to show you a little game of mine.

Back at the end of 2013 I bought the Ace and I wanted to make a small game. So I made this game within ~1-2 weeks just to take a look how the Ace is different from the older engines (I mostly worked with 2k/3 before). Nothing fancy, no ruby, just a small game using the standard stuff that is there to see how the engine works. Well, I am from Germany so I translated the game in the last few days into english. Since english isn't my first language I am pretty sure some of the dialogues may sound strange to native speakers, so if you have any suggestions regarding the dialogue/grammar/spelling, please post them here.

Anyway, the name of the game is Rivalry. You are playing as Lielle, a former mercenary who is now working as a freelancer. Her current quest sends her into an old temple where she should find an orb. However, she is not the only one who is searching for this orb...

I won't write anymore because the game is so short (probably around ~1 hour, maybe a bit more or less). The difficulty is a bit on the harder side, so you should expect to get your ass handed to you a few times in this game. :0

So, without further ado, here are 4 absolutely basic screens. As you can see, I really didn't try anything fancy and just worked with the editor. And tested out the "title screen creator". xD

Scripts:

- TheoAllen

And finally, the download link. Enjoy:

Rivalry Download (No RTP)

Rivalry Download (RTP files included)

Edit 3: I uploaded a newer version and starting with the next version I will marke the game with an 1.XX. I also added a script from TheoAllen and edited that into the post (and as a .txt file in the game folder).

Hi when I tried to start the game it said that a file was missing.

'Graphics/Characters/Lielle'

If you can fix this by tomorrow I may stream it on my twitch channel to give you feedback.

OK I tried the RTP version and it seems ok.

Whoops, I accidently deleted the character sprites when I reuploaded the normal version (yeah, stupid me xD). I'll reupload the normal version.

Edit: Replaced the download, should work now.

Edit 2:

So, after the stream I've made a few changes. Some of the things you mentioned (like the black corridor in the beginning) and I nerfed the test of dexterity quite a bit. I also added a difficulty setting in the beginning, enemies can be either weak (-20% stats) or original (like they are now). I also fixed some of the grammar mistakes (the "way way" is still in there, I actually don't know how to change that, any help there? xD). I think that was all, so, here is the new version.

I actually forgot to change the version of the game, but I will do that with the next upload.

So, in an attempt to get someone else to maybe at least try this short game, I push this thread after nearly a month. :0

It's great you're still working on this.  Hopefully someone else will give it a try soon!

I'll give it a try after getting done with the **** I'm doing :) Will edit this post with impressions after.

Edit: Agghh! Color balls puzzle so hard xD!

So far the game is good. I really like how the monsters are in the map. But I can't seem to get past that puzzle :( I'm stupid lol. Will get to it later, maybe T.T

Edit2: Okay, I finished the game. For a short and test project it wasn't bad at all. I don't know much what to say but here are a few notes from my perspective:

- I like how the monsters move. There is no space to exploit grinding.

- Battles get repetitive after a while :/ Heal, Achilles Attack, Repeat...

- I really liked the demon eye in the blonde dude xD Nice touch!

- Dialog flows kinda slow.

- Story and characters are appealing (I kinda admit I was annoyed when the blonde dude challenged me for the third time though lol). The ether stuff was a well made design choice.

But you did a good job. I'm pretty sure you learned a lot from this project to move onto bigger things :)

Haha, yeah that is a bit harder. xD

If you are really stuck, here is the solution:

1.) Move Red left, down, right2.) Move Green left

3.) Move purple down, right

4.) Move Red up, left

5.) Move green down, right, up, left, up

6.) Move Purple right, up

7.) Move blue down, left, up
That should do it.

Edit: The Dialogue thing might be because I am not a native english speaker. I translated the game, but I am sure some stuff may just sound "not right" to a native speaker. As for the battles, yeah, I realized that after a while too. But since the game is so short, there is not that much room for improvement unless I drastically change Lielle's skillset. So I just scrapped that idea and just moved on with it. After all, the game IS short. How long did it take you? Also, did you find the various secrets?

I'm not English native either. What I was referring to was the pauses between them. I felt they were a bit unnecessary.

I don't remember how long it took me (sorry T.T), I think an hour or so. I found the fire lord dude, didn't even dare to face the Ether dude lol. I'm curious what'd have happened had I finished the Trial of wit within the timer :3

I played it for a bit, I understand what Kyuukon is referring to.  There were many ellipses, perhaps too many.  It seemed as though every other statement had one thrown in.  Overall it felt pretty good, although there were a couple of typos I noticed off the bat ("batteling" during Gustav's intro, Strenght - near the "water spirit").  I'll be honest though, I more or less rage quit trying to pass the test of dexterity/speed.  It was challenging and I got fairly far, but after trying it for 10 minutes I simply didn't care enough to proceed.  I might take another stab at it later, but that's where I stopped.

Yeah, that. Which difficulty did you choose? I did reduce the overall difficulty quite a bit ("hard" is now the original one). But I thought I fixed that "Batteling" thing. I'll take another look.

As for the pauses, yeah. That's a bad habit, so to speak. I basically put a small pause in there when I think the speaker would pause for a bit. I am not sure when I started to do this, but that was some years ago.

Edit: I actually did fix the "batteling" thing. Do you maybe have an old version? Or did I screw the upload up again? xD

Could you choose your difficulty at the beginning of the game? That should be possible in the current version.

Yeah, I was able to choose difficulty on both.  I picked everything on it's "normal" setting.  I was also very, very sad when the water spirit lady went away when I turned down the fight lol.  I'm not sure if she pops up later or not (could make for an interesting branch if not).  Will try another go at it when I get some time later this evening.

Ok i tried it and was really enjoying it until it got to that dexterity test. Its a really well done puzzle room but its a bit early in the game to be commited to completing it. Fun though, im definately gonna keep trying.

Well, "early in the game" when te whole game only lasts for ~45-60 minutes (or more if you get stuck). I did nerf it though and I think pretty much everyone should be able to beat it on easy now without problems.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
