Could it be possible to make a 2.5D brawler battle system like River City Ransom?  Maybe not with all the little feature of RCR, but the general system would be fun.

If you're asking, what is River City Ransom?....

There have been many other games in similar style, such as Golden Axe, Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle, Final Fight, Double Dragon, Scott Pilgrim, Dungeon Fighter Online, Capt Commando, King of Dragons, Knights of the Round, Battle Circuit, Maou Renjishi, Denjin Makai, Ninja Baseball Bat Man, Blade Master, Sailor Moon, etc.

I'm thinking MV already has a lot of the features ready to go.  Side view sprites, weapon overlays, animation timing.  Animated Sideveiw Battlers could use actors as your enemies.  Yanfly has a plugin for AoE attacks, which suggests to me you could use something like that for brawler attacks.  Tick based states could be used for hit dazing or knockdowns.

I guess you'd also have to decide whether to make the brawler system from the battle system or the map system.  I've heard of people making Platformer and Legend of Zelda style games with the RPG Maker map system, and an RCR battle system wouldn't be all that different.  If using the map system, it would be kinda lame if you had to stay inside the grids, though.  If the battle system is turned into brawler system, you would have the option of having the map system around for other purposes.  Like you could make it like a normal RPG, but instead of the default battle system you brawl when you find a random encounter or contact encounter.  Or a menu map could be used kinda like a stage selection, you could wander around in towns and world maps, then when you find a dungeon it switches to brawler mode.

Maybe down the road this is more of a scripting question, but for now I'm just wondering what is a reasonable goal to aim for, what are the game mechanics of how it would work.  I have made brawler games in Flash AS3 before, which is similar to JavaScript, but I really don't like programming so I doubt I could be moved to program this into RPGM.  But if someone else wants to, I would be happy to lend my expertise and provide you some brawler graphics to test it.

Naturally, doing it in RPG Maker, you would want to have all your RPG functions, like level up and equipment and party members, which would be rare among brawler games, although River City Ransom was very RPG-like.  It would be interesting if you had Spells and Items available, maybe you press a button to pause and bring up your spells and item lists, like in Star Ocean.  TP could be kinda like a supermove bar seen in fighting games.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
