Hi, thank you for reading!
This is a really weird and oddly specific question, and I wasn't entirely sure where to post it, but yeah.

Part of my game is centered around a mysterious woman's house, and it has to be pretty big so I'm going for a mansion/townhouse look. Thing is, I want to make it using ONLY the default resources you get with RMVXA. Is it possible? And if so, how would I go about making it in the first place? I tried a few times myself, but I'm not creative at all when it comes to things like architecture. Also, I'm a newbie, so I'm rubbish at making maps etc.

Hello. I honestly think it is possible because there are tiles that remind something dark and made of marble but I have a question for you:
why do you want to stick to basic resources?

For what I can imagine you can have few different answers to this question:
  1. You want to learn how to use the engine and you don't want to buy more resources before you are more experienced;
  2. You don't know how to create your own resources;
  3. You don't want to buy more resources because you want to save your money
  1. You want to learn how to use the engine and you don't want to buy more resources before you are more experienced -> create your own resources editing the default ones. With a regular license you can edit them as you need as long as you give proper credit.

  2. You don't know how to create your own resources -> search in this forum, you'll find many resources (free and not). One of them is probably what you're looking for. If there is absolutely none that you like you can always ask someone to do it for you (for free or under payment).

  3. You don't want to buy more resources because you want to save your money -> edit the default resources or ask someone to do it for you for free or just ask some to create them for you for free. It will take a bit of time but you will probably have what you need. This is basically a mix of the previous two which only includes free resources made by other people.
If your situation is none of those listed above then reflect about your situation and see if you have any other way of doing it. In any case you can always ask someone to create the map for you. Not everybody likes creating maps (I don't for example).

I'm just messing around at this point, and because of the nature of my game I actually HAVE edited the tiles for a custom look- the custom look being that it's black and white. I'm not going to overcomplicate anything yet because I'm new to this and I make a ridiculous amount of silly mistakes but I am learning, but in the meantime I'm just using default assets in B&W/high contrast grey. Also, I like the idea of doing something new with the default tilesets that's a bit out there and creative.

It is possible, though? Okay, thanks. Now I just have to figure out how :confused: Back to square one!

Load a few of the Sample Maps included in rmvx ace, you could use them as reference, copy paste stuff or simple edit them.

The Merchant Hall Map looks realy Big and got more than one map for the floors.

Or maybe a classical reference, you make 1 Map for each room and structure it like in
the Old Maniac Mansion Games insteed of one big map like in example one.

Edit: If you dont want the big merchant hall, you could convert it to different maps
for each room.
I also saw that Merchant Hall, Castle and Fortress interior are all made with the same Tileset, they look very different and u could use the style of all 3 in your map.

Iam also not used to mapping and understand where you are, its realy good in this case to just use the rtp tilesets, i personally like the style its nearly timeless.

There's an idea! I'll have to have a look at them and see what I can come up with. Thank you!

One thing that can help is to treat each tile as 3 feet of space. The reason 3 feet is the default bed is 2 x 1 tile, and most people's beds are 6 feet long. So, if you treat each tile as 3 feet of space, that can help you make the rooms realistic.

From there, map it on a piece of paper. Or, google it. I think some mansions might have floorplans posted online, at least ones you can tour. Use that as a base, and draw down on paper where you want each room, then draw it from there.

Using this method, I got a pretty realistic looking rich person's house that was 36 x 29 tiles and 2 floors, using almost all default resources (the only non default resources I used in the end was I got a few new window tiles, new paintings, and I edited the cabinets, beds, and such).

Yeah also create it simple first, if some stuff is ugly it doesnt matter,but if you like how it feels/looks, than you can make it more pretty later on.

My biggest problem is with making the outside of it. Everything I do looks kind of awkward, rip.

Do you need a Outside?
Maybe its bigger in the Inside :).
Just use some simple Blog House, like the one in sample map "Sky City" or "Mountain Village" top right house, maybe the Tiles need to be changed but the outlay looks good.

Edit:
Do you know about Shift Button Maping? Its very Handy to create houses with the RTP Tilesets.
