Hello there, welcome to my first game that I'm making with RPG Maker!

To put it simple, this is a rogue like game. For those who don't know or are not sure on what this means, I'll sum it up for you:

Very VERY hard... boarder line unfair we'll say.

But have no fear, I'll try to make the game as fair as I can, by adding in healing items that can help A LOT towards the end and making sure you will be able to get by either just about or quite easily.

Story... Kinda

The reason for this is for those who like a challenge in a game and want to see if they can beat it.

The way my game is set out is like so; you wake up from a crazy night that you had and find yourself in this unknown area. Then you remember that you lost your friends as well and you're not sure if they're in this place or its only you in this massive cave.

As you progress you will remember a bit more each time, which will hint at the vague idea of you messed up and wound up here.

What Everybody Loves, Features!

Right so whats my game got as it stands?

-5 Floors, sort of story,

-Custom title screen (In progress),

-Puzzles on each floor,

-A maze to work your way through and survive it!

And a few more bits that are being added in!

Screenshots!

Here's where you come in

Now as far as I have made there are 5 floors. God knows if you'll be able to make it through them all but to test if you can, I'll need you to give it a quick play through and see how it goes, any comments on the ratio of encounters or the balance of the game in general, please do leave a reply so I can try to keep it as fair as I can!

The Demo ATM

At the moment it will contain the 5 floors that were previously mentioned. This release will be known as Keira. Don't ask why, just makes it a little different from release 1.1, 1.2 and so on (yes, each update will get its own name).

Remember to leave feed back and all that! It's all welcome! Any ideas on what to add? Tell me!

That doesn't mean anything, and doesn't summarize rogue-like at all.

Perma-death. Random dungeon generation. Random item generation and placement. Random monsters. Random as much as you can. That's more like it, but I'm pretty sure I'm missing some parts of what rogue-like means.

Sorry my bad, I've put a download here link in there now!

@muramasa - There's a lot of key aspects to put in, but at the moment I am just seeing how people will react to it, it'd be pointless putting all the effort into the pure randomness if no one likes it, if you know what I mean?

Well, I tried to play the game, but when I launch it, it says "Unable to Find File": "Graphics/Tilesets/tilea1"

So I replaced that file with the default A1 tile, and relaunched and it was unable to find "tilea2", I thought it would be okay to assume you're missing a few files. The game's filesize was surprisingly small at that (~ 2 mb), I'm not really sure what that's about. You should download the game yourself to make sure it's working.

But, some feedback on the screenshots you have here at least, try to add a bit more to them, they're very empty and bland. Explaining anything about your combat system would also be good to know, considering its a major part of Roguelike games.

I thought the biggest draw of a Roguelike was its inherent randomness --- never the same game twice?  Random dungeons, treasures, monsters, etc.  The player can choose from a wide variety of classes and races, each with their own bonuses and penalties.

Granted, Roguelikes also had permadeath and were very difficult.  But, without a random dungeon generator, and random items, placement, etc, it's not Roguelike.  It's just a hard, minimalist non-story-based RPG.  That's fine but a Roguelike is a very specific sub-genre of RPG.

Diablo is a good rendition of the Roguelike game genre, from what I hear.  And, the free Roguelikes that come to mind are: Nethack, moria, angband (and its many variants).  I'd download one of those and give it a try to see what a Roguelike is and isn't.  Here is Nethack's download link so you can try it out:  http://www.nethack.org/v343/downloads.html

Pretty much what everyone else is saying.

"Hard" is not a defining trait of a Roguelike. They are hard, but that's a result of the other mechanics:

- permadeath

- no 'saves', at least not like the ones typically in RPG's.

- random dungeons

- hidden stuff

- random monsters

If you don't have those, you don't have a Roguelike no matter how hard your game is.

I'll second checking out Nethack (originally Hack). It's been under pretty much constant development since the late 80's, and it was a great game then. I can't imagine all the stuff they must've added to it in the past 25+ years.

On the Google Play store I even found a faithful and free Nethack port for Android phones.  And I'd guess there is one on the iTunes store for iPhones.

I know I'm not contributing much to the conversation, but it doesn't work for me either.

:'C. Though I made it work by adding a Graphics\Tileset\tile_custom01.png (just added a random image after creating the folders).

I can say that even if it's intended to be rogue-like, the scenery is quite uninteresting and tedious. Sure, there is randomness, and there is labyrinths.

A good random algorythm would attempt to make organic forests too. Not some vanilla labyrinth, again. There is something that could be hard to achieve...

I suggest you make some map templates, and play around with that. Will not have virtually infinite amount of possible scenarios, but will do fine. No one will notice. Unless you make "just" 2-3.

Also sepparate the cutscene areas from the other areas.

Anyway, just two cents. I like the idea of making a rogue-like. With all my comments and stuff, you can see I'm interested. Right? :p Good luck.

Making games is the only thing I'm good at. Real talk.
So, uh... where's the RPG Maker MZ update with the MV animation system? Is there a release date confirmed?
Also I'm kind of brave enough to admit this. I... I have a crush on Sephiroth.
Please don't call me anything offensive. I'm naturally crazy.
thanks to a lot of lunatic coding... my game finally has a stun mechanic that I feel really good about. damage enemy's mental psyche (mp), and once empty, hitting with certain attacks trigger combos that can stack the damage.
Waiting for the 1.40 update before testing out my copy of MZ so that I don't end up adding unnecessary work to my plate. Meanwhile the current fourth draft for my story is taking shape, and I'm fleshing out the lore as I realize how things would make better sense here and there for the world that I'm building.

Just found out about your complications. I'm so sorry that you're going through this. I wish I could do something substantial for you, but our distance from each other makes that an impossibility. Still, if you ever need to talk or vent, I'm here.
