I'm creating a full alternative retro-styled RTP for RPG Maker MV/MZ, inspired by RPG Maker 2000/2003 and classic JRPGs from the 16-bit era.

I want to share this with you because I need your feedback and support. A while ago I found that my passion is game development and I dream that one day I will be able to invest more time in creating these types of things.

Here is a link to download my first asset pack for free. I will only ask for an email and your feedback in exchange.

The asset pack contains:
  • Sample game with 10-11 minutes of gameplay
  • Project files in RPG Maker MZ
  • Iconset with 280 items variety
  • Balloon spritesheet with 10 expressions
  • Character Alex with face and battle sideview spritesheet
  • 2 enemies with battle sideview spritesheets:
    • Zombie
    • Guard with 4 color variations
  • 4 characters:
    • Warrior 1
    • Blond Male 1
    • Hooded Mysterious
    • Jester
  • 3 dungeon tilesets:
    • Prison
    • Subterranean catacomb
    • Castle
  • 2 animated battlebacks
    • Subterranean catacombs
    • Castle
  • Objects for dungeons:
    • Traps
    • Torch
    • Levers
    • Chest
    • Barrel
  • Fog overlay
You can use these graphics in both commercial and non-commercial projects, with the engine of your preference.

I created this in my very limited free time, but I will put effort into creating more. What do you think? How can I improve? What should I do next?

This is pretty cool. One thing I do notice right of the bat tho that I personally find a little jarring is that the sprites have a very sharp black outline and nothing else does which creates a bit of a disconnect visually.

Other then that it looks great, imo

Reminds me a bit of Chrono Trigger!

I suppose some Field tilesets would be a good addition next ;)

Wow! This is absolutely gorgeous. I'm a huge fan of the 16-bit pixel art of this era, and you've absolutely nailed it.
Honestly, I don't have any criticisms - I'm in awe at what you've made already and can't wait to see more! :D

Personally, I rather like the solid black outline around the character sprites in this instance. It's a great way to say "this is a moving thing" and make it stand out more from the bg. While I'm usually all for more blended outlines, I think the solid black works well in this case to prevent the sprites blurring into the background.

As for what you should do next... well, if there's one thing I've always found many 16-bit assets packs tend to lack, is a set of good world map tiles. I'd love to see those in your style :LZScheeze:
Honestly though, whatever you feel inspired to create! It's gonna be awesome.

As I already told you, I really like the retrostyle you're making and the only reason I'm using the default assets in my project is because I'll surely use yours to replace everything when I finish it.

Thank you very much Finnuval! The outline is for player readability. It's a way to highlight important objects (characters, interactive items) from map background.

Chrono Trigger! That's a HUGE compliment Nenen! Thanks so much! And yes, add more variety of tilesets is definitely a priority.

Xiandata, you're too kind! Thank you! About the outlines, yes! That's exactly the propose, to differentiate important sprites from the static backgrounds.

World maps are key in JRPGs, and I think it's a great idea to include them in my next asset-pack.

very pretty!

You're certainly a gentleman! Thank you!!

Looks absolutely amazing!

Thank you fizzly!!

I know Xelion, you're my bro! I hope to see your game published with my graphics one day. Even a demo, that would make me very happy. Thanks for your help and support!

Sorry for the late replies. Like many of you, I have a full-time job in something very different, and I use my little free time to do these type of things, which is what I'm passionate about.

One thing that I noticed that most people don't feel comfortable putting an email on my website, so I uploaded the asset-pack to my itch.io store (for free of course):

Time for the next chance for y'all to affect my advent calendar! Where should Day 7's sprite come from: land, sea, or demon realm? :rwink:
Throné's final boss is weird. He is a guy holding a baby while fighting off attackers. I think his name was Santos. I might be thinking of someone else.
I think I've just about finished fighting the fight with the tileset I was most intimidated by for game jam. No pictures yet, the map isn't presentable, but I think the tileset will work! I'm very relieved XD

these 80+ gb updates on several years old games are the absolute worst. I just want to play for an hour or so before bed to unwind. Sorry, gotta spend that time downloading an update. Then my mods will be broken so I'll have to start over or wait for those to be updated to. Is a complete game within three years of the pay to be a beta tester period really to much to ask?
