Ok...so obviously this isint directed at anyone who frequents this forum, but ive noticed from watching various youtube videos, of lets plays of RPG maker games....either in the comments or from a statement of the youtuber...that some people kind of sneer at RPG maker. My question is...WHY?!

I know that RM isint the quite as powerful as, say...Unity (that seems to the a hot one)...but people can still make some pretty great games with it!! So what if its 2D?!

Also, keep in mind - love and hate are kind of the same side of a coin; if passions didn't rise either way, we'd be left with Indifference, and THAT would suck even more.
So...hate coins are better than no coins? :( ....i can see that.

RPG Makers strengths and its weaknesses are identical: It allows anyone to make a game. Unfortunately, this means a lot of people who should never make games, make games with it.

Which means there are a TOOOOON of bad RPG Maker games, that sour people on it. Honestly though, the hatred has really gone down a lot, it used to be much worse.

There's a whole topic discussing the "hatred".

Bottom line: do not care about these people.
@Cabfe- Oh wow...thanks dude. I guess my topic was a bit redundant. lol....but then i didint actually look to see if anyone made a similar topic (...and that one seems almost identical, even.)... anyway, my bad.

@ Touchfuzzy- Yeah, I dont really hear much hate at all.....its just that when i do, its pretty brutal. Like so brutal, and close minded that it makes me wonder if they have even worked with it at all. Like some one saying they hate a certain food, but having never tasted it, only maybe experiencing one flawed facet of it, going off someone elses opinion/thoughts.....such is humanity i guess.

Think you hit the nail straight there.

Given how easy it actually is to slap together a game, using this program, and get the game on steam, I'm somehow not really surprised, that the general view of RPG Maker games are bad.

It's a shame it's that way, because there's people who really work a certain part out of their pants, on their projects.

Touring the games on this forum will show developers bleeding for their art.

I don't think there's much one can do about the "hatred" towards certain half finished games on the different distribution platforms, other than keep proving that it's not the programs fault. :)

Ehh, it's because it seems easy and people feel ''cheated out'' of money when they see RPG Maker games on Steam, being like ''hell I could do that and I deserve to get that money''... Also, it's the internet, hating things is cool. Like seriously, there is just so, so much hate all over the internet that it's unsurprising that some people will hate the game, no matter what engine it was made in.

That said, I think that you really shouldn't worry too much about the engine... I mean people talk about Unity a lot and how it is superior to RPG Maker in every way, yet we end up with pearls like this nonetheless - keep in mind that putting up a trailer costs 100 Dollars. Yep, someone thought that it's worth putting up.

At the end of the day, all I can say is just ignore them and make the game that YOU want to play, not aiming for certain demographics like a big (yet blind) company or making sure that the engine is right. Just make it fun for yourself and I'm sure that it will be fun for others  as well :) .

LOL!  Skate Man!  That's classic.

Definitely proves your point that the quality of the game completely depends on the developers, NOT on the tools.

So I'd agree, just make a game you really enjoy playing, bug test it like there's no tomorrow, playtest it, polish it well and if you feel confident, then release the game.

And, worst case, you make games you love to play.  There's nothing wrong with doing that.

Nearly every single time I've seen a bad game it's had nothing to do with the engine.  It's all on the developers and don't let them tell you otherwise, here's some examples of what I've seen done in other engines:

I've seen Unity games which used no real textures other than single monochrome colours and the entire game was jumping from block to block with random pretentious inner meanings about love popping up from time to time.

Gamemaker games with an aim to be commercial that featured terribly drawn graphics and no change to the engine's built in platforming mechanics whatsoever.

UDK games where none of the original 3d graphics from Unreal Tournament 3 were changed whatsoever and they wanted to make an MMORPG.  For anyone who knows me and all the jokes I make about making MMOs with no budget, that's where it comes from.  If you guys n gals thought this forum had some bad, vaguely worded resource requests "for credit" - you haven't seen anything yet because, it happens everywhere ;)

Truth be told, I think the hate comes from all the bad rm games on steam/desura.  They're outnumbering all the decent ones by a very high amount, there's too many people trying to use the engine's inherent accessibility to make games for a cheap buck.

PROOF that UNITY or any other 3D engine can create shovelware.

It's not RPG Maker that "is only capable of making crap games".

It is the one who uses an engine, that makes something crappy.

So the mext time someone says "Oh RPG Maker makes only crappy games trolololo..." just throw them this video and "To the Moon" or "Skyborn" IN THEIR FACE.

Still can't stop laughing!

Kudos for the share!

A game is only as good as its creators.

The opinion is probably made from confirmation bias and the increased visibility of games.

We live in a time where the barrier-to-entry is at an all time low and the cost of advertisement for a product can be next to nothing. It's not that crappy games have never existed today. But a couple decades ago even if you managed to make a crappy game, it was a lot more difficult to get the medium to tell people about your crappy game, too.

As far as confirmation bias, once people start building their opinion many of them only look for material to re-enforce and support that opinion.

People should be blaming Steam or other platforms for allowing terrible games to be uploaded or publicized.

But this opens another can of worms because it's completely subjective whether a game is good or not.

Flappy bird likely would never have existed if it had to go through an "expert gamer" opinion.

I think part of the difference is that RPG Maker is easier to use than some of the other engines so it does make it even easier for the crappy, "get rich quick" designers to put out bad games. So, I would venture to guess that there is probably a higher percentage of them put out with RM than other engines. (Completely a guess though.)

RM does not entirely have a bad rep though. I was talking to my 21 year old nephew recently, showing him the game I working on and he only had good things to say about RM (no experience using it) and he's a pretty big gamer. So, it's not everyone's viewpoint. It's just often the loudest.

When it comes down to it, if you compare what the Japanese rpg makers users do differently than the users else where.  I am not against using premade material as I am doing just that, but I often mix graphics to give my game a more custom look than the typical game.  The thing is that in Japan, they have custom everything from battle, menu, music and even completely custom graphics, while some people in the world might use only the RTP and not change any of the script, or even use common scripts that are widely known.  Most people don't finish their games, but it's the minority of something that is always the loudest in the group.  So, even if a vast majority of rpg maker users are always seeking to improve their mapping, art skills, programming and music skills but people seem to think that you can just throw together a quick game for a quick buck.  There are people who use other engines with that same thought, who don't really give a rat's
#$%^& about gaming, only about money.
