I'm having this problem with the Steam Mac version.

It's kind of an annoyance for me, but whenever I launch using the desktop shortcuts or open the app directly in the Steam apps folder it just opens for a second and shuts itself down / closes itself.

The only workaround I found is open Steam and click the launch button directly on the RPG Maker MV page.

I also have a beef with the MV Steam version being all Steam'y. Like random after launch these "chat on Steam" pop ups show up in the UI and cover up buttons I need to click on.

I should have waited for the standalone Mac version to release on RPG Maker Web.

I'm not sure if I can (in fact I think I've read somewhere that I can't) but could I download the standalone version with my Steam license? I think they are separate entities, but you can't blame a bark for trying.

Sorry for necroposting the unsolved thread from 3 month ago. I just now learned I was supposed to start a new thread, despite the many redundancy warnings also in the forum rules.

Well, I don't know about the shortcut like that, but if it doesn't work, don't attempt to launch it that way?

Also, you can disable the steam overlay in the RPG Maker MV properties. Then it doesn't get all "Steam-y"

Thanks. You get an up-vote. I wasn't aware of the preference to disable that thing. That's a small part of the problem. I should have Googled that part.

About the shortcut, it's a typical mac symlink to the app itself. Also the app itself has the same problem. Closes itself. This is a new problem. It started recently. The app used to open. I'm already aware of the workaround that I posted.

Part 3 of the question still stands, though I don't suppose there's a way to get the standalone Degica version with a Steam license. This is something I should also probably Google. Going to do that now. I think I already know the answer though.

EDIT: I just Googled it and there still is no standalone Mac version from Degica. It's still only Steam.

The main problem is the instant crash, unless I launch through Steam. It's annoying. One time it was crashing through the Steam launch too. I had to restart the iMac. I used to keep RPG Maker MV on my Dock and it launched just fine. On a Mac, we launch apps through the Dock. It's a Mac thing.

I think there is something else involved around here, it should not behave like that - but currently I can't test it myself and it will be several weeks before I get enough time on a Mac to check that.

I know steam runs a check if a game is already running when it is launched, and that might be what is causing the problems now. Have you tried checking integrity of the files and/or reinstalling steam (not only MV, but the entire steam framework)?

IMPORTANT: That last test option assumes that you don't use steam much - it would force you to resintall all steam games and that would only be workable if you have only MV or only a few programs through steam - but if you have several programs and only MV shows that behaviour, it can't be the steam client anyway so that test would be useless in that case.

I went ahead with the reinstall. I only have MV and Undertale. All my other Steam apps are on a PC.  I put Steam and all the pref files in the trashcan with AppCleaner (it didn't touch my RM games), but I didn't empty trash yet just in case. So this is like the 12th time I had to get a Steam login code in my email. I notice this whenever I reinstall. I hope that's normal. I never questioned it.

Btw, I Googled Steam check integrity while re-installing out of curiosity that you mentioned do that thing first and in retrospect I should have tried that first. I was unaware that Steam apps/games could go corrupt during update and Steam needs to occasionally fix them; I just never heard of it; I thought it was about something else.

I also notice Steam itself is acting broken. The pop ups with game ads are showing error message and broken image. It's allowed in my firewall so I don't know what the deal. I hope ad pop ups are even normal for Steam. They only come once in a while. I also never paid attention to the download process before, but there is a launch button while MV is still downloading. I'm afraid to click it. It may be normal Steam.

Ok. So now I'm completely done with the reinstall. I feel like a boob for the wall of comments and the trouble with the grave digging thread...

but I just launched the reinstalled MV with the desktop short cut and it works. Sweet!

SHWONG!

The problem was so common of Steam and the solution came so fast that I can't help, but think that this could have been already answered in an older thread ;) Oh well...

Here's a neat thing. MV kept all my preferences and it opened with my last open game, even though all the Steam apps and system files went the way of my trashcan. I'm baffled with that one. Is that kept online with Steam or something?

That is really strange - it should only need a new code for a new hardware, not for a computer it has been on before.

But that might have been caused by the appcleaner, or it might be different on a Mac.

But as for the data - the MacOS keeps the setting in a preference folder independent of the programs themselves, specifically so that in case of a reinstallation the configuration is not lost. However, I can't tell you into which of the different system folders you'll have to look to find the preferences folder - I only work on a Mac for someone else and rarely have access to it.

Hello! I apologize if this is the wrong place to say considering Mog already has a solution (and I'd be fine to make another thread if needed! I was just wary as the rules mention not to keep posting new threads for the same thing), but I've been encountering the exact same issue, and the same solution did not work for me; I still can't get MV to boot, be it from the app itself or directly through Steam. It only started today, after MV was running fine yesterday with no issue, and other Steam applications/games are still working perfectly fine; I'd attempted some solutions others have had from previous threads of similar issue first (restarting, clearing steam cache, hard reinstall, etc), but it continues crashing on startup. I've attached the problem report, too!

Sorry again if this isn't the right place to post this!

You misunderstood that.

Each error or problem is different and should get a new topic, even if it looks similiar at first glance - what causes the problem might be unique to one computer.

But you should not make new topics on general options of game development like "How to do" questions, because those solutions work for everyone.

So please make a new topic - for example, this topic is about getting it to run on a Mac, and if you have that standalone then you're working from Windows as there is no Mac Standalone.

I should realize that error was produced by a outdated version of MZ so that's why it pop up like that
