Hello (new to the whole system, and site, hope right location)

So I recently downloaded "RPG Maker MV" from Steam after hearing/reading about it online and wanted to try it for myself. (on a laptop with windows 10)

My issue is; I got in, made a map and I made my first few events, I then went to click the Play Test button, but nothing happened. I waited a bit and tried again, still nothing. I cant even use the other methods (Game tab - Play Test / OR / Ctrl + R) all does the same thing. I though "hey why not try from the file as if I was going to play the game!", well... that didn't work either. All i get is: "the file or directory is corrupt or unreadable."

I really want to work on my game, but if I can't even play test it then what is the point of working on it further to make sure parameters and events work. Everything I look up online about this doesn't come up, and so I came here. Please can somebody possibly shed a little light on this issue for me please?

Close. MV support is the better location, just because it is about a specific product.

I've moved this thread to MV Support. Please be sure to post your threads in the correct forum next time. Thank you.

Also please don't use red or blue text in posts, as those are specifically reserved for moderators. I edited out the red color for you in your post for that reason.

Try moving the folder or run mv as admin

Where did you install MV, and where have you created your project?  And where did that message come up?  Do you even get a window that tries to open when you attempt to test?

Projects should not be created in the MV install folder (especially if you installed it into Program Files or something like that, but they shouldn't be there anyway).  If that's what you've done, move your project folder to somewhere else - either in Documents, or create a new C:\Projects or something like that.  That way you can avoid all the Windows permissions issues.

So I moved the folder out of the hard drive where my game info is onto my desktop, got the same pop up as before ( the file or directory is corrupt or unreadable ). I then attempted to open the file as an admin, and it said "Windows cannot find 'C:\Users\AAFES\Desktop\Warriors of Gray\Game.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." And I am pretty sure they are named the same thing, I checked.

I would like to point out I am not using any plugins, and I only have rudimentary knowledge on actual programming.

I have uploaded the screenshot (screenshot (29)) that is made with the deployment, the file circle should be the game itself.

And I actually am wondering something. So I created another project to test again (same issues) but when I tried to deploy the game it told me it was going to replace my "output folder" and I did not have this popup with my first project. Is this folder needed and if so I don't think it was saved properly or it was overwritten when I deployed it. I uploaded a image of this folder for comparison as well, and the index.html link opens a page in my browser and tells me this prompt: "Error Failed to load: data/Actors.json"

I'm just trying to give all that comes up for better explanation and possible help. I didn't touch any features in Project1 only filled in a map to attempt a load.

You need everything in the same folder.  Hard to see where that Project1 folder is - if it's in a Windows folder somewhere you might have issues.  Move the WHOLE project folder out.

The Output folder is created when you deploy a game.  When you deploy again, it wants to replace what was in there.  I wouldn't worry about that until you get the first issue sorted out.  You don't have to deploy in order to play test.

Alright, I try that, but for now I'm going to start over and follow a tutorial maybe and see if that helps. Though it still probably wont explain why I can't touch the Play Test button, but if that issue occurs again i might completely remove all the material off my computer and try reinstalling it fully (I did try to reinstall RPG maker, but it only seemed to reinstall the icon). If that doesn't help then I might have to say I can't use it sadly.

You still haven't actually said where your project was saved.  If you create a new one, don't put it in the folder where MV is installed, and don't put it in any of the folders that Windows itself uses.  My Documents is a good place.  Also don't put it in any folders that will auto-sync with online repositories (onedrive, dropbox, etc) as that causes a whole suite of issues of its own.

MV is installed in my C:Drive, while all my created game folders are saving to My Documents. I moved them out of My Documents to the Desktop to see if that would change anything but the same issues occur.

Yeah, if they were in My Documents, they should be okay.  Does it open up a window, as if it's trying to launch something?

No it doesn't actually open up with anything, it just pops up with the error. When I try as an administrator I get a pop up like if I was to install wizard saying that it wan'ts access to my computer, then the second error I mentioned earlier pops up on my desktop. I rarely touch where folders save unless I know exactly what the program will do, so nothing should be out of place save for me moving it to the Desktop or My Documents.

I apologize for this, for it must be as frustrating to you guys as it is for me.

One question because I see that option on your screenshots:

Have you linked the folder where the project is to OneDrive?

You need to use a local folder for the project, because the editor needs constant access to all files - if some other program is synchronising them through the net at the same time, that has been known to cause problems.

The "game.exe" is nothing but a browser and contains no data - the game itself should always run in a browser when opening the index.html.

If you get a "failed to load" message when you try that, there are two different reasons for that: either the files are damaged by something, or the browser you're using has been restricted to access local files (that is a setting in several different browsers, and enabled by default in several chrome versions and others.

Both things are possible - especially if you are sync'ing with a cloud the files might have been damaged, or you might have used a browser with the wrong settings.

I fixed my issue, I did have to do a complete reinstall. It apparently didn't fully download the first time.

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such?
