This is how Steam and RPGMaker has always worked. If it suddenly didn't do that then it would be working correctly. That's why the Standalone version exists. I'm pretty sure most Games and Software in Steam does the same thing. It will always open Steam.
So in short, "requires Steam to open" is the intended behavior? This is pretty disappointing, but alright. Is there any way to get the stand alone version (assuming you're talking about RMMZ from the RM site store) if you already own the Steam version without having to buy it a second time?

Absurd. I have no need to run two applications of DB FighterZ at once. But I do have a need to run two RPG Maker applications at once. One for my own project, and the other one for VS, Mog, or just a random test project.

Again, why is this suddenly an issue now? We were fine with being able to use MZ without needing to confirm with Steam. Who decided to put this restriction on the program all of a sudden? What's the point? The people who use the program know well how inconvenient and irritating this is than some random dude in a suit.

If you call this working correctly as intended, then that's a bad decision. It works as intended, yes, but not well. Basically "task failed successfully".

If it's specifically just optional parameters, I opened 5 instances of MZ and there's no problem. Even with a project open. It doesn't ask for the optional parameters. I'd recommend reinstalling if it's causing that issue for you or Verify the Integrity of your cache.

Tried both. Didn't work.

I am only able to open one project. If I try to open another project, the splash logo will appear, but project won't run. Tried to run another RPG Maker window by Steam, didn't work, either.
I still can't figure out what the hell is the issue with the screen tearing in 1.2.0. Does anyone else have this problem besides me?

In any case, please pass the words to the programmers. Just reverse all these nonsensical changes to the program. It's just a headache for most users and it does nothing to improve the engine itself. Please. It can't be that hard to just make another patch/update to fix these problems.

I would agree that it seems a simple bug, but might not be that simple to resolve, specially if it's something that Steam does by default for any software in their platform. Trust me, the one I reported since 1.0 hasn't been resolved and mostly because they aren't able to replicate, and by experience, when software developer is unable to replicate, it never gets resolved....I know because where I work we do that when we can't replicate, we don't really solve it, the best we can do is add something to prevent it from happening or something that would give us at a latter time a better clue as to why it happens, like logs or something else....but I digress.

I can understand if it's a strange bug like the screen tearing, but that's not the case for forcing the program to run by Steam. We obviously have been able to open many projects without having to confirm with Steam, easily, and now suddenly we're restricted like this. That's a deliberate decision that someone made, for whatever reason.

What's weird is that you can't open more than one instance on steam. Are you doing it right here after opening in steam and pressing open. Are you still having an issue doing it this way?.

You can see in the video here there is no problem opening multiple instances:

@Archeia It gives me a message that says "preparing to launch RPG Maker MZ" then disappears. Only the first project that I open can be seen on the screen. If I close it, then rerun the program again, then the last project I tried to open will turn up.

If there's a way to skip that damn confirmation message, that'd be great. Or at least make it only ask once.

You can see in the video that it is opening multiple instances and thats technically how you should do it since steam client only allows 1. What I am asking is if it works for you.

@Archeia No, it doesn't work for me. Like I said:

I can also confirm that I am having the exact same issue as Mr. Detective when it comes to opening multiple instances in the way the video shows. I get the logo and then nothing else happens.

In this video, @Archeia does not open all the instances of the editor via Steam. Only the first instance is launched by Steam. For the others, @Archeia uses the workaround I described before.

Archeia, if that can help you, we didn't have to do that before. We could launch multiple instances via Steam itself or via the .rmmzproject file.

Edit: What is strange with your video is that you don't have the weird confirmation message with the optionnal parameter required to launch MZ via Steam.

It's not really a workaround. That's the only way to open multiple instances since the beginning. (VXA, MV has always been like this??)

It is the case with MV for me. From a quick test, it's the case with VX Ace too.
I was glad MZ wasn't like that, but with the new update, now its behavior is the same as MV / VX Ace.

Not sure if this would help in showing what everyone is referring to by opening the steam version of MZ bypassing the steam DRM - according to steam the last time I opened it through steam is Jan 1

This is still the un-updated version of MZ editor (1.1.1)

I'm not trying to be argumentative here, but that's not true actually. One oldschool game I play, Meridian 59, can be acquired through Steam but does not require Steam to run once installed. I can freely launch it directly from its executable or through Steam if I choose. This was how RMMZ behaved as well...until the update.

Honestly the whole reason I even bought it through Steam in the first place, besides the you-already-own-RMMV discount, was because I heard you could run it with or without Steam, unlike RMMV. With this feature retracted, it is now less of a product than before and that's unfortunate.

We'll see what we can do. But otherwise just opening it via window task bar should do the same thing for now.

Opening via window taskbar does not work either for me - it is the same behaviour as double click on the .rmmzproject file. The splash screen appears, then disappears again with no process running.

RPGMaker MV and VX Ace do not have this problem - I can open as many instances as I want by double clicking the project files. Steam will show the application as running until the last window is closed.

The only workaround mentioned above that does work is navigating to RPGMZ.exe and starting that directly.

It could be related to the "launch with parameters" confirmation flow in steam, as the previous applications do not have this.

@Coelocanth Do you have that as the target of your shortcut in the taskbar? "[...]\Steam\steamapps\common\RPG Maker MZ\RPGMZ.exe"

- go to my steamapps folder and find the RPGMZ.exe, double click it
- it opens the last project i openned
- redo first and second steps for another instance of the editor
- go to the menu > File > Open... and choose another project

Ah. I understand now. I just did this. This is the only way to open many projects at once. It's quite different from what Archeia did in the video, though. Another thing to note is that if I close all the projects, then return to my project folder, launch the application; the first time it won't open. It won't do anything. I have to launch it again for Steam to ask me confirmation.

Simple solution: let Steam verify our project folder/application the first time we launch it, DRM reason or whatever, then never again, and let us have many projects open at once. Not really much of a difference than using the application in the Steamapps folder, right? Just less of a hassle for users.

So I'm the only one with the screen tearing issue, huh? Now that's gonna be another headache...

After the update I can no longer launch more than one instance of RPG Maker MZ by clicking on a *.rmmzproject project file. Also there is an annoying Steam pop up of "RPG Maker MZ is attempting to launch with the optional parameters shown below." Allow game launch message.

RPG Maker MV works how I'd expect; clicking on any *.rpgproject when Steam is running will open the project. RPG Maker MV will not launch if Steam is not running.

New update for Battle Castle: Shadow from the Past A Shadow's Echo. No gameplay changes or new content, but lots of things got renamed, including the game title, for extra immersion. Some things related to sound too, like activating chests and taking things.
