Can confirm, the same behavior with Steam on my end. I'm not able to open multiple projects like I was used to (double-clicking on the .rmmzproject file brings up the splash image, which disappears after a second and the project doesn't open), downgrading the individual projects to 1.1.1 doesn't fix this either. And I also get the Steam popup every time I try to open a project. It's honestly kind of annoying, it's like Steam thinks I don't actually want to open the MZ project.
The only exception is clicking on the pinned taskbar version of MZ, which both doesn't have the popup and allows me to open other instances of MZ. It's still rather clunky though, I'd much prefer being able to open the .rmmzproject files directly.
I also took this opportunity to test if I also get the screen-tear bug. Brand new project, no plugins in the plugin manager. At least on my end, no screen tearing.

Asus ROG Strix Scar 15" laptop
2 graphics cards (Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super, Intel UHD Graphics)

~1.5 TB of storage

After the update I can no longer launch more than one instance of RPG Maker MZ by clicking on a *.rmmzproject project file. Also there is an annoying Steam pop up of "RPG Maker MZ is attempting to launch with the optional parameters shown below." Allow game launch message.
RPG Maker MV works how I'd expect; clicking on any *.rpgproject when Steam is running will open the project. RPG Maker MV will not launch if Steam is not running.
Damn, I thought I was doing something wrong when I click .rpgproject file; I am getting the same issue. At first, I thought it was because my project was in the wrong folder... but nope, every time I open it, steam opens and gives me "RPG maker MZ is attempting to launch with the optional parameters shown below."
I mean, the project still opens, thankfully, but it's just annoying, lol. Just wanted you to know you aren't alone. Also, MZ, for me, at least never runs without steam.
Glad I'm still working in MV for now. The one time I tried to open my little MZ test project, I encountered that optional parameters BS. Definitely annoying as hell.
Oh was wonder if this problem just occur on me. Well i agree to it, it feels more like downgrade now. Before you could freely open several other test projects at once. Also without that annoying extra confirmation to open the project.
I never had this problem on other rpg makers.
I guess that was implement in this update to prevent the Steam detection launch problem? Because before you could open a MZ project on his folder, without Steam recognize the MZ are started and be active. Which cause Steam runtime problems of MZ.
There are Steam softwares like Aseprite and Blender that can be opened without opening Steam, and it does not run itself if the app is clicked. So this is much probably a choice rather than a default behavior, and I much prefer the "standalone" version myself. Also because RMMZ used to work like this, I see this as a step back.
I've noticed an issue with the new version of the corescript.
Certain windows' background extends to the right outside the borders. I have tried this in a blank project with no plug-ins; and the issue still occurs. I'm attaching images from a blank project to demonstrate. It's most noticeable when a custom windowskin is used, but if you look closely you can see it also occurs with the default Window.png file.
This seems to happen when using the "Show Text" command, and in the battle scene, in skill/item select dialogs and the battle messages (e.g. "Enemy appears").
The windows display perfectly normally when downgrading the corescript to 1.0.2
Just wanted to chime in here and confirm that I'm getting the same issue with Steam having to confirm launching MZ every time and not able to open multiple instances of MZ.
I can also confirm it was not like this before the update.
I can also confirm it is not like this for MV version of steam. I can launch as many copies of MV as I want without steam having to confirm, and without steam having to be running.
Edit: Also once MZ is closed, it cannot be re-opened again, until you force close steam. If you try to close steam it will say it cannot be closed because MZ is still running although task manager does not have any copies of MZ running. Once steam is force closed and restarted only then can you open a new copy of MZ which will then have the same issue if you close it.
There was a workaround that someone posted on this same thread that best worked for opening multiple projects. I think I’m blind and I can’t find it again.
Go to Steam\steamapps\common\RPG Maker MZ
Then Click on RPGMZ in this folder. This allows you to open it multiple times and open projects through MZ.
I’d highly suggest making a shortcut (Right clickà Create shortcut) and paste it on the desktop. Putting on my taskbar doesn’t help- at least for me, it doesn’t open. The title screen comes up and vanishes.
Credit to the person who suggested using the software in your steam folder.
Having it on the taskbar works for me - both for being able to open multiple instances and for being able to open it without Steam needing me to confirm.
I have to wonder how much of this is 1.2.0 (because this didn't happen until this version of MZ) and how much of this is Steam (since apparently other games also have similar issues with regards to the "are you sure you want to open this?" popup).
Somebody noticed some weird lines in the menus with the version 1.2.0? It happens in older versions with some plugins like the message popup window. PD: Im using the spanish languaje.
So is there any update on the main issues people have been raising in this thread? (Optional parameters popup as well as not being able to launch the program independently of steam)
Neither of these annoyances are useful or welcome.
I've been thinking about doing a jokey submission for the Christmas jam in which, like a cartoon special where all the characters "play" a counterpart in A Christmas Carol, my MagiCats would each play a role from the C.A. Smith story The Coming of the White Worm, with Cyprian as Evagh, Rousalie as Dooni and so forth. But in the end, I figure all my development efforts should go toward the game proper.
Shower Thoughts: ". . . Scammers would be OP in the Elder Scrolls. They could just get speech 100 and blatantly ask everyone for all of their money, and everyone would think it's a great investment. And then after being robbed blind, they'd say, with a smile on their face, 'need something?' "
Day #2 for advent is compiled. Please, go to their threads to share love! But, if you wanna talk to me…what’s your favorite Christmas carol or holiday song?
