Hello there!

I am sure there must be already one or more threads, but just in case. If there are, sorry about the post!

I have had my RPG Maker software running on my Windows installation for a while, but I recently have been focusing more on my neglected Ubuntu installation, and I happen to have Wine installed, with some software that allows me to have several Wine instances (or "bottles"). I am planning of creating one for RPG Maker, and of course Steam itself. However I want to ask if I need to install something first so I can get them all to run without issue (I've got RPG Maker 2000 through VX Ace, excluding VX "not-Ace"), including MIDI support and all.

I manage my Wine bottles with a software called Q4Wine.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

I never got ACE working for Ubuntu or any other Linux. The trial worked for me, but it died after key activation.

Ace works, you want wine version 1.7.48, you're going to want to use the trial version to install ace and the RTP and then you just need to get your key from steam.

For some games you can just right click and it'll give you your key, otherwise it's best to just purchase from degica as they'll e-mail you your key as I don't know how the keys are handled with steam.

Well, I don't think I can do serial activation since I've got most of my software through Steam, and I don't seem to find the "View CD key" option. Someone correct me if wrong.

The only non-Steam installer I have is for RPG Maker 2000 since I got it through the Humble Store. Also got VX Ace through one of the bundles, but there's no option for a non-Steam installer (Plus I rely on the workshop). Same with XP. The keys I got were for Steam, so I doubt they will work with the standalone versions. And RPG 2003 was a gift on Steam, so...

You'll just have to install the "windows" version of steam and run it under wine, don't use the native Linux steam client.

That's what I'm actually planning to do. I know there's no Linux ports of RPG Maker yet.

My question is if I have to install some runtime or pre-requisites to get my software to run under Wine, including MIDI playback.

I don't use steam. I guess I'm still out of luck with ACE, but I am about already done studying an Open source Engine that has more platform support and it is as easy to use. I will definitely be switching if my ACE project files don't work with the new RPG maker MV.

There should be a solution on Ubuntu or Mint or Debian or whatever your distribution is for this question. But I don't blame you if you didn't even asked. I know that most of the people on Linux communities are very dismissive, since they are a community heavily trolled by idiots who know nothing about computers but they play the "I know it all" game. This is bad for tnem though, cause they don't undertstand they harm the community, but anyway, that is a spike to my heart really. The problem is that Linux needs a little effort to get used to it and learn a FEW things, just a few, that will make your life easier. Things like  "sudo apt-get update" stuff. When you got a dismissive community and NO company to give any support, nobody wants to use Linux.Ok can understand about lazy asses. But what about people that REALLY have intention to learn? What about people like you? Then they complain about Linux not being spread. Psst! Android IS a Linux distribution.

I think you should check THIS out, before losing any hope!

If you need further help,I will help you as much as I can, but I will be away from PCs for some days.

Good luck!

And keep using Linux! :p

Correct:

Alternatively, if you have the space, memory, and processing power, you could possibly emulate Windows in a virtual machine and install RPG Maker/Windows Steam via that.

The new Linux after 12.04 ubuntu/Luna are very buggy and I have had no luck with them. Luna 12.04 is amazing though and same with Ubuntu because it is based off of it. I will just keep using Ace in windows, but I am already moving to a new Engine.

I can contest to everything working perfectly in Arch Linux or Gentoo Linux, ubuntu has always been an abysmal mess...  Debian is too old for the desktop but great for servers...

I backed up a list of my software, so they are downloading/installing automatically and am just waiting while everything installs. I have to download a few deb manually though.

I will try arch in virtualbox. If everything works, then I might switch to it in the future. I will say Ubuntu 12.04 and Luna 12.04 are very good, but are getting outdated for new software/updates. I can't compile some software. For instance, Solarus and Kdenlive. That is about it.
