I want to apologize in advance if this is not where I should have posted this, I looked at each board and just couldn't sdecide what would be on topic for this thread..

I've been trying to get into making RPG's, and as I have a PS2, I decided to pick up the PS1 and PS2 games as mentioned above. I actually quite like both of the games, but certain things about each game make me want to use the other, and I keep traveling back to each of them over and over and I do NOT want to use RPG Maker 3 again.. So then I looked into the fact that there are a million other versions on the PC. I haven't gotten any of them on the PC because I didn't know if my laptop could handle them. I have a plain old Asus, probably cost me round 300 new.. I am not good with specs so I couldn't tell you what I have exactly.

I'm gonna keep this short because I'll start to ramble at some point.. I know 2000, 2003 and XP are most definitely better than the old console games, but I don't know which one to go with. I like the battle system in RPG Maker 1 where you just see your character's name and stat box at the bottom, and the enemy in front of you. I also really really like the old retro graphics of that game.. I'm basically happy with everything in RPG Maker 1 but since I cant type with a keyboard it just kills me.. So, out of RPG Maker 2000, 2003 and XP, which one would resemble RPG Maker 1's battle system and graphical style? And can any regular laptop that costs roughly 300 handle each of the games?

RMXP and all following RPG-Makers have trials available on this site, you can use that to test if they run on your computer (go to the download link top right). You might want to check if your computer can handle the newest, RMMV, because that has a lot of options that are not available on the older makers.

As for which one is most like the PS1-one, it would be better if you describe what those makers are. The console makers are handled by a different company and unknown to most people here (especially as they're really old). But if you describe how that battlesystem works or give screenshots, we will be able to answer your questions much better.

They all show character stats at the bottom of a battle screen. XP shows your actors in battles, VX and Ace don't. MV can do both/either.

ALL of them will require extensive keyboard use, so if you seriously "can't type with the keyboard", none of them would be very good for you.

I didn't mean I can't type with a keyboard.. I meant you can't type with a keyboard on RPG maker PS1, because it was not designed for keyboards. I can obviously type on a keyboard, lol..

lol - I thought you meant you couldn't type with a keyboard, like something was wrong with your arms/hands that made it difficult/painful. So it kinda wasn't obvious ;)

I was confused the same way Shaz was and I knew that about the PS1 RM. I'd bought a mouse for the silly thing to try and overcome some of the difficulty of use, worse mouse I've ever owned and didn't help much. It's funny how language works sometimes, isn't it?

I'd say that RM 2000 is the most like the console makers, but that doesn't mean it's the best option. There have been a lot of improvements over the years. Since you'll be learning a new engine anyway, you might as well learn the newest version. It won't be too confusing to pick up, the basics are pretty much the same. You pick tiles, place them on a map, use events to get things to happen, edit the database with items and spells and monsters and so on. You'll be fine.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
