Hi all, I'm sure alot of you have XP and VX Ace (or some did a trial maybe) anyways this is the question I am about to ask you...

Do you like VX Ace better for it's mapping stuff, or it's scripts?

And...

Do you like XP better for it's mapping stuff, or it's scripts?

VX Ace has much better scripts tons of stuff to choose from, and the mapping in VX Ace, well there are DLCS and Parallax mapping, and others I haven't known of yet.

XP the maps look really good in XP, but it's just a bunch of different things, no DLCS or anything. And the script choice well............Not so much, : P

---------------------------------------

VX Ace wins for scripts.

XP wins for mapping.

Of course there are tons of other perks to it, so name some others if you'd like! Which one wins at what? :)

When I first saw ace's RTP, I just ignored it completely (I dislike those small characters), until it won me over because of the power of it's script system.

But man, I really wish it had a proper layer system.

Note-tags make a pretty big difference for me.

I like to organize data in close proximity with the object in question. I don't want to have a weapon in the database, and then have to go through a bunch of scripts to find more weapon customization settings.

Note-tags can be implemented in the form of external text files in XP, which would be more acceptable for me because now I know where all the "extra" data is.

Mapping - Xp

Eventing - Ace

Scripting - Ace

Databasing - Ace

With half as much effort, XP maps can look twice as good as Ace's. It's just the UI in Ace flows much better.

Nothing more has to be said. This has been discussed thousands of time. You can or cannot like XP mapping, but that's just a point of view. Truth is, and will always be, that XP mapping is better than VX Ace mapping. It's just superior. Tilesets height can be very, very long (trust me, VERY long), infinite amount of tilesets (VX Ace implemented this, but VX didn't. However, VX Ace still has to have A, B, C, D and E, and the size of each is strict, while XP doesn't have that limitations), 8 autotiles per tileset in database, 3 layers of mapping (the fourth one is just for events lol)... that's just superior lol. Oh and built-in fogs ;) And natural 640x480 resolution ;)

But yes, VX Ace is technically better. 60 FPS, RGSS3, tons of scripts, also it's newer and most scripters nowadays just scrip for RGSS3. Btw, you will be shocked when you found the quantity of XP scripts, you just have to search well. HBgames.org Chaos-project GDunlimited, there you can find a great, greeeat number of scripts (specially in the first two). But I must say something, I think (I think...) that VX Ace is more likely to have fps drops than XP. I don't know man, but I switched to XP for lag issues, and XP seems to run smooth as hell, while in VX Ace I constatly had ~20-30 FPS, which is not good. Sure, XP FPS are capped at 40, but that's enough, it's still smooth. The MINIMUM fps I can get in XP are 20, but because there is a cap of 40, is not the same as having 20 FPS with a cap of 60

Edit: Oh, yeah, I forgot that, database in Ace is also superior lol

XP wins at mapping, hands down.

And taller sprites.

Ace has it beat in pretty much every other area - database, flexibility, eventing, scripting.

If everyone pick XP mapping as their preference, I prefer VXAce style mapping. Because I'm not art director, nor mapper. I usually get bored on mapping and likely want to end that as soon as possible VXAce give me simpler mapping edit than XP. I remember when I want to make a map in XP, I took two days just to make a single map. Because the layer system drive me crazy, and there're only 7 autotiles if I recall correctly

I swear I won't touch RMXP once again. I'm happy enough to have RMVXAce. And it's better in a lot of aspect.

I have a similar feeling as TheoAllen towards XP mapping.  After all the discussions previously about how great the mapping was in it, I went and downloaded the trial a while ago and really just felt that the mapping process was overly complicated for what was trying to be achieved.

Maybe it's because I started with VX, and then switched to Ace after not having used it much and then tried XP after having got so comfortable with Ace's mapping and everything.

Guess it's all down to personal preference and what you get used to at the start.  I have to say that I wouldn't move from Ace to any of the previous versions unless I had absolutely no choice.

Yes, there are only 7 autotiles in XP, and that is disappointing. I wish there were more. Ace's mapping system is more "clever" (which is good for newbies who haven't used XP), but sometimes I think it's trying to be too clever and causing more problems than it's worth. The autotiling, I mean - it continually resets itself and all the other tiles around it when you draw - I find myself constantly re-doing tiles that I HAD right, but were messed up by Ace's autotiling when I was trying to do something with other tiles in other places nearby.

Words cannot express how much I detest Ace's "intuitive" autotiling "feature".

I really only know mapping so that's all I can contribute to this.

Things I like better in Ace

  • Building autotiles
  • Tile organization
  • Shadow pen (hate the auto shadow though)
  • Autotile transparency
  • Parallax backgrounds
Things I like better in XP

  • Autotile edges and corners that take up the full 32x32 tile
  • Control over what goes in what layer
  • More control over what autotiles do or don't remap around.
  • No max tiles
  • Fog overlays
Things I dislike overall

  • Counter tile rules
  • No way to make a tall autotile fence.
  • No animation outside of autotiles
  • No way to change the look of weather without scripting.

So for the newbie mappers to either XP or Ace, how many even know that if you double click on an Autotile, you can override the system and manually select which tile you want.  Also, how many know that if you draw while holding down the SHIFT KEY, you wont affect any Autotiles while drawing?

The reason I do not care for the Ace mapping system is too much control is taken away from the artist.  I often look at screenshots made in XP and Ace and conclude that too many Ace maps look damn near exactly the same as any other maps made with the same tileset.  Problem is the lack of Layers takes away that control.  Other problem is simply the artistic style of the default tilesets used in Ace.  They are tiny in comparison to XP.  The squatty chibi / kaiser sprites drive me up the wall.  In XP, size relations between characters and enviornment is disproportionate.  My dog is as big as a tree that is also the same size as a mountain.  Really?  In XP, sizes feel more proportional, but require control over Layers to make natural feeling enviornments.  Larger characters also allows for more details in those characters.

To me, XP vs Ace in mapping is like being given a blank canvas.  In XP, you are given a paint brush and bunch of paints, but in Ace, it feels like I am trying to create the Mona Lisa using Lite Brite or an Etch a Sketch.  Very paint by numbers.  If you cant paint at all, you wont want to use a paint brush and may feel like the only way to create anything is to Paint by Numbers.  But Paint by Numbers not only becomes a crutch, it becomes a total handicap to the point that it severely limits levels of creativity.  I tried the trial of Ace and gave up on it in less than a day.

Scripting

When we talk about Scripting, we all have this problem of referring back to the core scripts that come with each system and do not always consider the user generated content.  There are more scripts for XP than Ace simply because XP is older.  And there are many good scripts for XP just as there are for Ace.  Many scripts in XP are highly compatible, but the core of XP that Enterbrain created makes compatability more challenging.  It isnt impossible to make scripts compatible, but certainly more challenging.  In regards to just the core scripts of XP vs Ace, Ace is far superior because of its modularity.  The way that the core scripts were written in XP did not do very good when variable determination is buried in the middle of a method, and changes to the way these methods work required replacement of entire methods, which caused tremendous compatability issues.

Enterbrain has learned from their mistakes.  The code in XP is functional, but not easily modified without causing compatability issues.  Ace is better.  Enterbrain also has a very unique position in that the code someone writes for one game is specific to that game and isnt intended to allow everything out there to somehow alter the behavior.  Thus, the style of coding for Half Life will be exceptionally different than that made for the RM series.  Methods may be huge and not easily modified.  Its more like Firefox vs Internet Explorer.  Xp is like IE and Ace is more like Firefox.  Both actually function as designed, but Firefox allowed for Addons and IE was designed around hosting spyware.

For me, this is relatively mute point as I am stil sticking with XP over Ace due to the graphical style, and as a result, will tolerate the nuances of XP.  If Enterbrain comes out with another RPG Maker that goes back to the mapping style of XP and the flexible scripting of Ace, then and only then will I change, but until that time, I am sticking with XP over Ace.

Double-clicking on autotiles only works on XP, not on Ace. And if you hold down the SHIFT key while mapping, you won't affect the surrounding tiles, but the autotile you're drawing with also does not automatically reformat according to your drawn shape.

Im glad you pointed that out.  As an XP user who has practically zero experience with Ace, this, unfortunately, is just another reason for me to avoid it in regards to Mapping.
