Hello!

I was about to order RPG Maker MV here on Rpgmakerweb.com, when I found out that it was a lot cheaper on steam. Here, it costs 71,99$, but on Steam, it's only (this is approximately, had to convert from NOK) 52,68$.

Is there any differnce between the version on Steam and the version here?
And if it's not, why is it so much cheaper on Steam?

Steam and RMW use different conversion rates, because steam often has a local dependency while the RMW let's your bank handle the currency exchange.

For some countries, steam is cheaper - for others RMW is cheaper. For Degica, they both charge the same in the US as far as I know.

Other than that, the only difference is that when preordering on RMW you get both a standalone and a steam version, when purchasing on steam you only get the steam version.

The bonus packages are identical, even if the descriptions are partially misleading.

I believe Steam has a special promotion offer which has -10% off RPG Maker MV. The special promotion offer ends on the 23rd. If you buy it from Steam you will be able to use it only through Steam but if you buy it from RPG Makers store then you will get both a Steam version and a standalone version :)

I'd probably buy it from RPG Maker if I were you. I hope this helps mate :)

Matthew.

Not to mention that buying from the forum store gives all your money to the team, instead of Steam taking its share.

Thanks for the answers, guys!
But one more question.
What is the difference between the standalone version and the Stem version?

Both the steam and store version has 10% off because that is the Pre-Order discount offer.

As for price discrepancy, it's just that some countries have lower prices when it comes to steam, which is why for some, it's cheaper to buy it from steam. It's already explained by Andar. For example, for me buying it off of steam would be just around half the price from the store (around $34 from conversions, maybe they adjust prices to have better sales in a certain country or region).

The difference is basically, steam version needs steam to run so you can run the program... For stand alone, you don't need steam running.

Personally, I'd get it from the store since you'd get both versions plus you'd be giving a more direct contribution to the team... :)

PS: I actually did pre-order from the store btw :)

For MV, we don't know if there are differences between Steam and standalone - there won't be much however.

For Ace, the only differences were that the steam version had access to steam workshop and steam cloud and the functions neccessary to use them (an additional "manage Project" menu point that could be used without the cloud as well).

That however had both advantages and disadvantages as the cloud could slow down loading and saving - a lot of people disabled cloud and workshop because of that.

I asked my dad about this topic, and he gave me a pretty clear answer. If I buy the Steam version, I will need to be logged in to Steam to use it. The standalone version doesn't necessarily need internet to work.

Thanks to all who helped me :)

Wrong, Steam has an offline mode and that is enough for Ace (and probably MV).
You need to be online for downloading (and in the case of the standalone to confirm registering), but both versions can be used offline after that.

So there's really no difference between a stand-alone and the steam mode if you decide to go offline mode?

Well, you still need to log into Steam, even if you go Offline mode. Stand-alone version doesn't need that.

Oh, in Steam you can store your projects to Steam's Cloud. So you can download your projects to another computer or to the same one in case you have to format your computer. I never use stand-alone version so I'm not sure if that version also has some kind of Cloud service.

The good side about pre-ordering from this website is your key will give you access to both Steam and stand-alone version with a single purchase. But the price is a tad higher, unless you take into consideration you are getting both versions at the same time.

@Blaon - Hopefully Steam Cloud will work nice on MV because it was a bit of a disaster back on Ace.

Plus you can always use cloud storage services like Google Drive and Microsoft's OneDrive to make online back ups

So apparently Steam has an offline mode, but whenever I try to start up MV, if it can't connect to Steam, I don't get to run MV.  There is no option for me to "run in offline mode" - maybe that's just because I don't know where to find it.

But given the choice (and because they're the same price for me) I'd definitely go with the RMW version.  Steam checks on a regular basis to see if your key is valid, and it has all that yucky cloud stuff.  I haven't checked what MV does, but that was a pain in Ace - every time I started a new project I'd have to go in and tell Steam to not save it to the cloud AND actually delete it from the cloud as well.

Strangely enough I haven't even thought about that as an issue until right now - so maybe it's changed, or maybe the playing around I'm doing isn't enough for me to actually notice any issues.

I would (and will) still buy from RMW though.

Steam games doesn't have offline mode, steam as a whole does... It should work once you set steam to offline mode, maybe there's still a bug with MV itself or something.

Have you tried without being connected to the internet? Normally that brings up a window stating it can't connect to steam and if you want to try again or start in offline mode.

Well being connected every so often I get a can't connect to steam but it won't give the offline mode button.

And yea the steam version has some problems (at least ace does don't know too much about mv yet ;) ).

And also make sure you actually run steam in offline mode... You can't close it then hope that the programs will run.

Also, if you go online and want to go offline mode next time, make sure you set steam to offline mode before you disconnect else you'd need to go online first again before you can use offline mode.

You cannot go online, exit without activating offline mode and disconnect then hope to chose offline mode afterwards...

Steam itself needs to be set into offline mode before Ace is started for that to work (can't test with MV yet).
There are two ways to get into offline mode:

1) if you start steam without internet, it will ask you if you want to go offline or try online again

2) In the steam client, click on the "steam" menu top left - the small menu line above the arrows, not the main menu line with shop etc. The second option should be the one you seek.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
