Sorry if this isn't the correct spot to ask.

Just wondering, as a someone who needs to learn Ruby. Is it worth picking up one of these how to books about learning Ruby Programming. I looked on Amazon and I do see quite a few books about it. I have no idea if any of them are worth getting, or if they even teach something that I could use here. I also see some books listed for different versions of ruby. From what I can tell, VX ace uses version 1.9.

Again I'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong spot.

I think you should start with some free alternatives like the tutorials posted on http://ruby-doc.org/ to get an idea of your learning preferences for ruby (or programming in general)

Some people like books, others just need to know how it looks like and can get themselves going.

@xcom, that person is not a mod, so don't listen.  This is the correct place to ask such questions.  User reported.

Side note, I usually just learn Ruby from looking at the scripts in the Script Editor.  Learning what everything does as I go makes it a bit easier. lol

I personally recommend DiamonPlatinum's tutorials. It goes straight to where you want to learn and within  RGSS scripting concept. All you need is some basic concept in programming such as Control Flow, Loops, Array then you can start practicing with your first script and at same time learn advance thing on the move. If you learn Ruby just to script some scripts for your games You don't want to dive into the whole Ruby programming course, it will consume a large amount of time where you have to remember large ruby library. You will get discourage quick before you can start scripting. I tried it, I read two basic book of Ruby are all about basic control flow, loops...etc. which every programming have, I still dont know where to begin scripting for RM because it requires you to know the RGSS library.

If you determine to be programmer to code more than just some scripts for RM, then ever programming book worth reading, perhaps try Python as your first language, python syntax are explicit where Ruby is excessive where you have to remember more ways of doing just one thing which is often drive newbie to nut .

Below where I got Ruby book from.

10 Free E-Books on Ruby for Beginners

http://readwrite.com/2011/04/08/10-free-e-books-on-ruby-for-be#awesm=~oq8Ld7b91pVnI8

Im no expert, just newbie like you through painful experience with Ruby. At least I am now know where to begin with scripting thank to series of Diamonplatinum's tutorials and it is free. If I still continue reading the book, with some spare time I have, I dont know where and when I will able to make my game.

Thanks a lot for the recommendations!  I have some down time at work and thought maybe thumbing through a Ruby book might help pass the time.  Who knows, I might actually learn a thing or three while reading it.

@XinChao  I have been watching DiamonPlatinum's tutorial's.  It's like 54 videos to watch, and I'm up to the 8th one.  I noticed that some of the later ones are a half hour to an hour and half long!

XinChao is right, it is worth it if you want to really learn rgss3. Grin is also right CodeAcademy is really good for Ruby in general. Do both of those and you'll be set.

Another suggestion, (after your done with that) is a pocket reference book published by O'REILLY and written by Michael Fitzgerald. I use it all the time. It will help keep everything fresh that you've learned and maybe teach you a little more.
