Hello!--and thank you for visiting! My name is Sam, and this is the game I've been working on for a while. I hope you enjoy where I'm taking everything, and I hope you stick around to see where it continues to go.

The game is ready to play, but still very far from completion. In essence, you will be playing the beginning of the game as it is meant to be. If I had to rate the game, I'd go with a T for Teen rating. There are bad words, but they're obscured with symbols. There are some moments of obvious sexual themes, but it never crosses a line; mostly plays on words and teasing banter. There is some blood and fantasy violence.

That all said, I hope you enjoy what I've created, as I've had nothing but fun with this adventure.

Welcome to Run The Last True Symphony.

synopsis.png

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
Run The Last True Symphony is an old-school styled turn-based RPG; akin to the past generation JRPGs of the 90’s. An adventure carefully crafted by Bug Powder Assembly.

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
Expect a heavy story driven experience with a rich and thoughtful narrative; an epic tale told through the characters, their actions, their experiences and follow the stories they were born to live. Meet the twelve party members of various different backgrounds, mannerisms, wants, hates, loves, disciplines, abilities and personalities. Witness a tale of camaraderie through hardship, a journey fought with magic and bullets and how loyalty can blossom to love with a simple act of innocence.

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
Anticipate a traditional styled battle system. Minimalistic and straight-forward, but energetic and familiar to the games we grew up with. Combat a variety of creatures that populate the world through random and static encounters, and battle challenging and dynamic bosses that will prey on your weaknesses. Learn various skills and abilities each unique to the characters. What a character may lack in one aspect, they will excel in another.

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
Locate various allies of different backgrounds throughout the world to recruit for your growing trainband, from healers to weapon smiths; build a loyal crew of misfits and top guns. Accept numerous quests that range from kill to exploration, rescue and investigation. Learn forbidden magic, equip exotic weaponry and find lost treasure.

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
Explore the world of Tellus; a magical, fantastic place of old world blues and modernized infrastructure. Visit lands of varying degrees, from the tiny resort island of Kisada, to the vast wildlands of Galvia, and from the rolling plains of Succien, to the icy mountains of Atrium. Learn the history of this world through optional in-game reading material, places of interest that seethe lore with relics of a bygone time and the people that could recite legends like they happened yesterday.

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
See hand crafted maps modified using RM Community assets and many a few hand creations; and accentuated using programs such as Gimp, Photoshop, and Comipo! Manga Maker. The world is brimming with posters, billboards, advertisements... each telling a unique story of their own.

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
Participate in the fight to reclaim Arcemaecia, discover some of Tellus’ most dangerous hidden locations and take on some of most surreal and vicious battles the game will offer. Unravel the mysteries of the world, and maybe finally put to rest the reports of strange craft that haunt the skies.

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
You will laugh with your entire soul, smile from the bottom of your heart, and revel in the victories you will witness… but prepare for tears to fall and your heart to break.

about_the_demo.png

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
The demo is between 9 and 12+ hours in length. It will take you from the true beginning of the game and continue through the main adventure, and end at the halfway point of the first act. As of now, I have no idea how long the game will truly be, and no idea when it will be completed.

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
You can save anywhere, and at any time. This will eventually change, but probably not for a long while.

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
The demo is exported in both Windows and Mac (as of 10/20/2018.) However!.. The Mac version is highly untested, please let me know if there are any faults with it.

Donica Linnell

If mystery were a person; she would speak in an accent you’ve never heard, have eyes a bright shade of the bluest sea… with fire and wine painting her long flowing hair.

Etiquettical, regal, well-spoken and a natural practitioner of white magic; it’s true what they say of redheads… they’ll shoot you a sweet smile, and burn your world in an instant. With beauty and class; she’s a young woman of many words, but of little want to speak… at least, when it comes to truth.

Whatever it takes, however difficult a journey it may be… through darkness and pouring rain, over mountains and under moonlight; she walks. Humming the song of her homeland, she walks. With purpose; with a mission… she walks.

An enigma—a redheaded stranger; what secrets hide behind her blue eyes? The truth, may be stranger than fiction.

Longinus Von Oi

Not everyone can be a hero, some try; most fail. What even makes a hero?

Surely not being tactless and simpleminded, impulsive and obnoxious… spending your day playing and laughing when you should be reading and studying your lessons? A hero doesn’t snub his wins and berate his enemies. He doesn’t dream of shooting the moon; he doesn’t play jokes and eat mashed potatoes… so what could a country kid know about being a hero? That’s the easy part…

A hero takes action when others don’t. He gives when everyone takes. He smiles when times are tough. He has soul, he has compassion, he has loyalty and he would walk to the end of the world… just to stand on the edge with you. The heart of the party, Longinus may not be a knight in shining armor, but he just might one day… hit the moon.

Not everyone can be a hero, some try; most fail… but not everyone can be a red-eyed gunslinger.

Mao Yazzinaro

It’s been said that a friend will always be there for you. Through good times or through bad ones and Mao is no exception.

Shy and nervous, but intelligent and passionate; full of energy and a voice of reason, it also helps that he’s well versed in black magic. Always lost in a book; epic worlds of mighty dragons and powerful wizardry, but sometimes the best adventures are the ones you live. Not fond of ghosts, but really… who is?

Having grown up with his two best pals, Linus and Sib, he’s the glue that binds. Never denying the call to adventure, he’s the friend everyone wishes they had. He’s a romantic, he’s a fighter, he’s a free spirit… and he’s not one to underestimate.

It’s been said that a friend will always be there for you… but Mao—will always be there with you.

TLKiTwV.png

Sibelis Brassard

Cheerful, kind, loving and friendly; these words could describe anyone… anyone but Sibelis.

As deadly as she is beautiful, she will break even the toughest man in half with a single swing. Discipline at its highest regard, skill of a seasoned professional and she knows it, as anyone else who might tread a little too close. Known as the muscle of her eternal party, she’s tough as nails and takes nonsense from no one. When you’re looking for raw power and brute strength, she’s your girl.

Level-headed, tactical, grounded in reality… and when the going gets tough, she’ll gladly show you why she’s the best. Besides, who else will keep her two little brothers from blowing up the world?

A loyal friend and a brutal enemy to have; say what you want about Sibelis… just don’t say it to her face if you want to keep it.

______________________________________________________________________________

Rqc00t2.png

Kirby Rufigar

Every once in a while, you might hear a tale of a man who’s fought a thousand bigger men. Told that when he gets knocked down, he laughs and stands right back up, tougher than before. It’s been said that his swordsmanship is only rivaled by his foul mouth—a sinner and a saint.

A lieutenant in the Kurohata, Rufigar is a legend among their ranks, and the eternal bro to Longinus. Sure he might be vulgar, flippant and have propensity for violence… but his heart is just as big as the sword he carries.

Dutiful, valiant and fearless; always ready to defend, and always ready for a brawl. There’s no one better to have at your back when your plan involves going in hot and wrecking a few dozen wimps. Word to the wise… don’t call him by his first name if you value your life. Many have learned that the hard way.

Tales have been spun about the man that never surrenders, stories spoken of his infamous talent of mockery and legends told of the one that finds his happiness surrounded by battle… but the most amazing thing—is that they’re all true.

Hecate Langstaff

There's an old saying... that powerful people make it look easy. That essence and flow are as natural to them as cracking a smile; that presence is everything, beauty can be intimidating and command is to be obeyed at any cost. To call Hecate powerful—is an understatement.

Once the leader of Kurohata Team 7 and the commanding officer of Longinus and Rufigar—she has since risen to become the shepherd the Kurohata deserved—earning her rightful title of Marshal. Domineering, strategic, resourceful... and unrelenting. To make an enemy of Hecate is to make an enemy of the Kurohata and to make an enemy of the Kurohata... is to battle your worst nightmare with only a prayer. You don't need to be blessed with magic when a single order can bring an army to your side.

A vicious streak hides behind those doll green eyes—one person in particular can attest to that... but he's the lucky one after all. What's a dream anyway, if it can't be shared with someone you love?.. and a pair of dreamers in a trench—is worth the fight of your life.

So is the saying true? Do powerful people make it look easy? Hecate does--but the reality is... blondes just do it better.

plot.png

What if your shadow was your only companion? Could you walk a thousand miles? Would you know what’s worth fighting for… worth dying for?

For Donica Linnell, she has no choice.

A young woman of half-truths and ruses from the once glorious sovereign of Arcemaecia; she’s come to terms that the time of inability has long since passed. Believing that her sovereign’s downfall began with the unearthing of a mysterious jewel; she hatches a clandestine plan to steal and destroy it in the ancient flowing lava pits in the land where the gods turned the other way… a treacherous place, named Kazilboro. Trading her peaceful life for a chance at her sovereign’s redemption, she goes on the run…

Now a wanted target from forces of her own sovereign, Donica quickly learns that away from her ivory tower, the world glimmers less than she would have hoped.

It isn’t the fear, nor is it the journey that saddens her… it’s the fact that she walks alone.

Timid to the alien land outside Arcemaecia and ignorant to the dangers, she falls prey to its nature; a redheaded wildflower, in the wrong garden.

But—on an ordinary day… something extraordinary happens.

A young man with eyes like crimson and a coarse silver tongue, carrying a red brass handgun—inadvertently becomes her savior; and, for the price of one Cizash, he becomes the companion she never knew she wanted.

With a party of ever growing friends, Donica begins to find focus and face her fears to see a growing ray of hope… but even the brightest light, casts an equally dark shadow.

Torn between being truthful in her endeavor and keeping her plan guarded; with a lie, she begrudgingly sets the stage for something she and her companions could have never imagined.

It’s a difficult thing to be a hero; as it’s far easier to hide behind the falsehoods you build… and as for Donica, the truth will not set her free.

What if your shadow was your only companion? Could you walk a thousand miles? Would you know what’s worth fighting for… worth dying for?

For Donica Linnell, she has no choice… but for a gunslinger, there is only one answer.

Nothin’ ventured… nothin’ gained.

world_of_tellus.png

A world like our own; Tellus is experiencing a new renaissance. Machinery is becoming more and more prevalent, motorized vehicles are replacing horses and wagons and computers are becoming the norm. Magic, though archaic, is still a force worthy of attention and will never fall out of service to those that choose to master it. The people are happy… or at least, they’re complacent.

They live in peace, settling in all parts of the world. Many enjoy the cityscapes of Clionga, places like Vathe and Arbordell; while some find haven in Galvia’s majestic mountain ranges, and picture perfect scenery. Others find amity on the sandy beaches of Kisada, or the untamed wilderness of Goronland; perhaps even the icy ground of Atrium with its technological structures or the rolling plains and open range living of Succien.

Life seems wonderful on Tellus--but over a hundred years ago, it was a different place; a terrible place. Technology was little more than an infant and a bitter misunderstanding would be the cause of the largest conflict of Tellus’ history… a five year war that spanned almost every continent, a war that took the lives of millions; the unnecessary war--The Great War.

It pitted the Sovereign Empire of Arcemaecia, the plutocratic realm of the East, against the Unitary Dominion of Juniper, the colonial superpower of the North. Feudalism opposing conscription, cunning versus manpower… rhetoric and propaganda—leading to sadness, followed by death; and its remnants still litter the fields to this very day.

What was gained? Nothing.

What was lost? Innocence.

A war a hundred years ago, where not a single veteran remains… how could it still be causing so much strife?

Simple, the war… never ended; an armistice never signed, a treaty never written and an apology… never spoken. The only thing holding these two nations from opening an old wound is a century old ceasefire.

Still the people carry on… golden people of the world, they are. They laugh and sing, work and grow, play and pretend… yet still they remain complacent. Unfazed to the vicious creatures that inhabit the world, unaware to opportunistic brigands that live to strike fear and empty purses and untroubled to the changing political climate… it’s been said for decades, but nothing ever comes from the scare. After all, it has been a century of relative peace.

—but something’s up in Arcemaecia… two years ago, the borders of the Sovereign closed; no one in, no one out. Television and radio limited to within the boundaries, and news sparse—a complete information blackout. The Kurohata report internal discord, but are unknown to the cause, or severity.

Tellus watches and waits for what may come. What could have Arcemaecia in turmoil and is history about to repeat itself?

Though you can save anywhere; you might still want to speak to Crystal. Not only is he kinda funny, but he might have some lore to share. Crystal is also the only way to use tents, when not out on the world map.

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
Some townspeople might have more to say as the story progresses.

Many things are lootable, especially if you're looking for a nice, cold drink.

who_is_bug_powder.png

Bug Powder Assembly, or just Bug Powder, is made of two people; my girl (jennykfj) and me (samkfj.)

I do the game development, and Jenny supports me with things like hugs and kisses and she also is the one that compiled this post (I'm not very keen on forum posting.)

I'm from Texas, and Jenny is originally from Germany. It's a long story, but not even thousands of miles could keep us apart, and now she's helping me with my dream of making a video game. This isn't my first rodeo with game development--but it is my first solo flight.

I'm also a writer. I've had a few tiny publications, and I always dreamed of writing a novel. In a sense... this is that dream. Jenny is a graphic designer by trade, and has taught me many little tricks with creating art; though, I'm hardly an artist, unless the art in question is stick figures, then I am indeed your man for the job.

I'm also somewhat of a musician. I was in a few bands in my recent past and I've been incorporating my love of music into my work. To be specific, I was in a punk band (oh yes, there was a time when I had a two-foot mohawk) and in an acid jazz band (I always loved the sound of jazz--and mixed with electronic sounds? A dream come true.) I'll always find myself going to one of my instruments for comfort and just to alleviate stress. So, yes--I am a huge fan of punk rock and jazz/blues.

As for the game, I had the idea since high school. I wanted to tell a compelling story, with unforgettable characters. A story that stays with you for many years; one that swells emotions of sadness one moment, and makes you smile the next.

Thank you for viewing this post, and I hope you enjoy the demo.

development_goals.png

Here you will find all the goals of development, I will update them when I can.

- To change the movement sprites and combat sprites.

- To change the introduction movie. As a warning, the introduction movie does have a copyrighted song. Reason being, I wanted to see if I could make a video using only RPG Maker and Comipo. After about a week of work, it came out pretty good, I think. I decided to keep it in just so you could see it too. I do understand the music is not owned by me, and I will create a new video using a song I'll create instead. I hope that isn't a deterrent to want to play, I do promise I will change it when I can.

- To add custom art; things like faces, sprites, and character busts. I'm far from an artist, and I will one day soon hopefully have the means to get some great art. Comipo and the rtp are my saviors.

- To add an original soundtrack. I'm working on it, I have only the one song that plays in the main menu.

If you are interested in helping us with any of the above, let me know!

Hello!

I added a new song! You can hear it in the videos section of the page. I still have many more to finish, but I really wanted to complete this one, it's not gonna be in a scene appearing any time soon, but I was in that mood where I needed to finish it.

I'm also working on some world sprites (I dunno how to call them, the non-combat walking sprites, I just call them "world sprites".) I'll try and complete one and show you when I can.

I hope anyone that's played, will continue to play and let me know how they enjoyed it! Also, if there's any bugs to fix. I didn't catch any when I tested, so hopefully I managed to catch 'em all.

Goodnight/morning/day to y'all!

Edit 1: I added more info to the main page.

Edit 2: I actually did find a bug... I realized what happened. I had two battlebacks with similar names, and I deleted the present one, and kept the obsolete one. I am fixing it now, and for anyone that downloaded it, I really apologize. I had tested the game before but when I deleted the files it was after the game was already packed. I should have paid more attention :(. Again, I apologize.

To fix: what can be done is to go into the www/img/battlebacks2 and copy the image called TrainingCenter.rpgmvp and paste that into www/img/battlebacks1. It is the same image, and will not trigger the error.

I just finished updating the current version so this will not occur from here on out. Thank you for understanding, and again, I'm sorry I missed this.

Hello!

I wanted to give a little update.

Firstly, I want to thank everyone that's visited the thread, and anyone that's played the demo. I took two weeks off development to recharge, and now I'm back to it. I've also started making sprites. I haven't gotten too far yet, I'm learning as I go. I want to thank hiddenone for her amazing sprite templates, they've really given me the push I needed to try and do more on my own.

Here's the first sprite, it's of the protagonist, Longinus.
Y10plAf.gif

This one is still a WIP, it's Donica, the Main Character.
5ecG0n2.gif

I'll definitely show you more of what I create as they come along. I'm having a lot of fun doing this, and I hope to get better at it as time goes on.

I'm also still working on music, nothing to share right now. I also will go back to the songs I've already created and maybe add more sound to them.

That's all for now, I hope to read some feedback soon. It is a long demo, but I hope it can keep you entertained enough to storm through it. Have a great day, 'til next time.

Hello. It's been a while since I last came on here, but I have a few things to show. I've been real busy lately with development.

Firstly, I want to say thanks to y'all for coming in and showing interest. It really means a lot to me :)
I know the game is still far from complete, and still might be a little buggy, but more and more it's coming along!

So a few things to share.

I've been overhauling the sprites, replacing all the chibi sprites with newer ones I've been creating. Thanks again to hiddenone. As much as I love the chibi sprites, I don't have the heart to do away with them completely, so I might use them for other means, like for art or something.

Attached are a few pictures of some of the sprites. I haven't gotten all of them yet, but I've gotten quite a bunch. Sprites will have more dynamic movement along with sitting, turning their heads, facial expressions and gestures. Along with the sprites, I've also begun overhauling some of the maps; adding more props and scenery.

5nJjHUA.png

TKePrpL.png

G7BbQ6Y.png

gL1XBFV.png

For this next one. I have a short video (no sound, it would just be a lot of cheering.) This is to showcase cheering sprites using Yanfly's Doodads. I changed the height of each person by a few pixels in hopes to match (or at least come close to) the sprite height. Donica (in the center with the yellow shirt and red skirt) is in a sitting position, while the cheering sprites are standing. The video is linked from the game's facebook page.

Lastly, for now, I've been working on music. I overhauled the main theme and cleaned it up and added some better sound. I really should upgrade my pc, as working with music doesn't make my pc happy. Thankfully, my wife (so great) she allows me to use her laptop for music, and her beast of a machine for recording.

This sample you're about to hear is incomplete. This version of the song itself is complete, but I want to add a piano accompaniment. I've been looking at purchasing a piano, I have a few on my mind, but I want to find the perfect one--the one that just calls my name. This version is the one that has replaced the existing version in the main menu.

There will be multiple versions of this song, along with a planned final version, complete with lyrics and vocals. One of my friends from high school jumped at the idea of singing--she told me she fell in love with the lyrics... but I'll get to that one day.

Am also working on a battle theme that has elements of punk rock mixed with classical strings, drums, horns and a female choir; and Longinus' Theme (The Protagonist) which is a cowboy-western influenced tune with strings and horns.

As a side note: I use an online program called Soundtrap. I cannot recommend it enough, so if you're wanting to make music, try it out. It might not be the best out there, but it's fairly cheap and works well. You pay monthly, but it also has a free option with less instruments to play with, but you can at least test it out to get your melodies down. I like it a lot, not as good as my days using pro tools in the college labs--but for a relatively cheap price, I love it.

This is Walk With Angels - Donica's Theme

That's all I have for now, I'll be adding more items soon, and I'll be adding more items to my thread for assets, so if you're interested, keep an eye out there too. Every asset I make will always be free and has no strings attached to it--except maybe legal ones like owning RPG Maker MV.

Thank you again for the support everyone. I hope you all enjoy the demo, take it for what it is for now because soon--it's gonna be more like I always imagined.

Y'all have a wonderful night/day/morning/evening, and I'll see ya.

Welcome to Run The Last True Symphony.

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
The demo is between 9 and 12+ hours in length. It will take you from the true beginning of the game and continue through the main adventure, and end at the halfway point of the first act. As of now, I have no idea how long the game will truly be, and no idea when it will be completed.

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
You can save anywhere, and at any time. This will eventually change, but probably not for a long while.

icon_rtlts_f_S5_icon.png
It is so far only exported and tried with Windows.

Dutiful, valiant and fearless, always ready to defend, and always ready for a brawl. There’s no one better to have at your back when your plan involves going in hot and wrecking a few dozen wimps. Word to the wise… don’t call him by his first name if you value your life. Many have learned that the hard way.

Tales have been spun about the man that never surrenders, stories spoken of his infamous talent of mockery and legends told of the one that finds his happiness surrounded by battle… but the most amazing thing—is that they’re all true.

Some townspeople might have more to say as the story progresses.

who_is_bug_powder.png

Bug Powder Assembly, or just Bug Powder, is made of two people; my wife (jennykfj) and me (samkfj.)

I do most of the game development, and Jenny does a lot of my visuals, and supports me with things like hugs and kisses and she also is the one that compiled this post (I'm not very keen on forum posting.)

I'm from Texas, and Jenny is originally from Germany. It's a long story, but not even thousands of miles could keep us apart, and now she's helping me with my dream of making a video game.

@Jellicoe

Thanks for your words of encouragement :) that's real nice of ya to say.

--but to answer your question, I use Manga Maker Comipo!

It's really nice for creating art (especially for me, since I couldn't draw to save my own life.) It's also pretty easy to use, there's various poses for characters, lots of props and there's a community of creators for it too. The models are 3d too, so you can move them in various degrees and get different angles.

You can also find a lot of free 3d assets across the web that will work. Just gotta look for what you would need, and put credit where it's due (in many cases.)

Definitely good in a pinch, totally recommend it. I use it a lot for making billboards and posters.

I could create a package as one, yes!-- but only problem is I would have no idea how stable it would be. I can do that when I get off work.

Thanks for the good idea! I'll edit this post with any other pertinent information.

EDIT 1 11:16pm cst: Working on making a Mac version. I have the master file but I just wanna go through it to make sure it's okay. It's a little old and I haven't touched it in a while, so just wanna make sure it'll be in good condition and not mess up anywhere.

EDIT 1.5 12:57am cst: After an impromptu dinner, getting back to it. So far so good, just looking for anything that might be amiss.

EDIT 1.75 1:21am cst: Mac file is being uploaded to dropbox. I will add the link to the main post downloads tab, but also put a download on this post.

I also want to use this post to give a little game update. As, I don't think I've done something like that in detail in a while.

I've been working on overhauling the sprites in the game; utilizing hiddenone's tall sprites and creating clothing for them. It's a tedious process for me (I am very much novice at it) but I am having a barrel of fun.

Also, I've been working on my maps; trying to add more scenery, animated sprites/doodads and make it more natural looking. There are a few maps (off the top of my head; the town of Seaport specifically) that I feel can look a lot nicer. It's more work, no doubt; but nothing was ever gained by not putting effort, at least--that's how I see it. Since this entire project is a one man party (with my girl as the wind beneath my wings; great girl, love her) it'll be a while before I can upload the newest version.

This version that I've been working on, will change/fix many problems that the demo has; things like unnecessary dialogue, retelling of already established information, faster breaks and speedier text in many instances. You will also see more dynamic sprites, doing--well, dynamic things... things like moving their hands, showing anger in their faces, blushing, etc.

It is my goal to really iron out the kinks in the framework of the game, that way once I get into the uncharted territory of the game, I will have more to rely on and use. Also, I'm still workin' on music, sound effects, and art. I will (try) to get some art created when I can.

In a nutshell--the next release will look prettier, and be more streamlined in the story, without sacrificing narrative; along with more original music and steady direction.

Most important of all--thank you to those who have been vocal on their interest and their ideas. To all of you who have clicked in to see what it is I've been creating, and hopefully you'll be back to see more of it. Your words of confidence and your interest have really brought smiles to my face.

Until next time. Y'all have a wonderful day/morning/night/evening... and I'll be seein' ya.

Mac Version of the Demo On Dropbox

As a general warning: This Mac version is very much untested as I do not have a single apple product to try it on. If I could, I will ask anyone that wishes to play it, to please--please--please, let me know if there are any faults.

Hello!

Just wanted to say thanks for 1000 views! I hope you continue to watch as I continue to work. No complaints here--just a lot of work to be done, oh yeah! Looking forward to finally getting all the little sprites done. I'll continue to create little things for the community too! I love making things for y'all.

I have a short video to showcase of some progress I've been making. So far, I've been overhauling the maps with more detail. I still have many many to go, but it's fun journey.

Since I'm on vacation this week, I hope to get as much done as I can. I'm looking at (hopefully) a Spring 2019 release of Act I. From my calculations (which are very poor) that will put Act I at between 16-20 hours total.

As for the video; I apologize in advance for any jumping it does--I really need to upgrade my pc. There's no sound either, I don't normally record with sound mostly because it seems to crack sometimes when it records. I suppose I should try something other than fraps.

Y'all have a wonderful morning/day/evening/night, and I'll be seein' ya.

-Sam

Hey, Sam. I wanted to try out your game because it looks very interesting, but I came across a problem. Did I do something wrong or is the resolution really that low? I'm pretty sure there should be a way to make the screen appear bigger somehow but I haven't found a way to enlarge it on the options menu.

Greetings,

@Tw0Face When ya start the game, press F4. This will put it in full screen stretch mode. Appreciate you taking the time to try my game too. =)

@punchybot Thank you. I would indeed appreciate critiques. I would ask that you hold no punches and have at it. The game is ever evolving, and a lot of things present in the demo have been changed so far, including the sprites, maps and a lot of conversationsö--but yes! Please do give your feedback, I am very much looking forward to it =)

Okay, so here is some of what I think. I haven't made it through the entire demo, but there is something important I want to address.

Just so you know, I don't "review" the game like someone would an official review. Instead, I pull out Notepad and I write down my thoughts as they are happening. As a game maker, I find this more useful, as it lets me understand how someone is enjoying my game, which is why I am doing it here. So I hope you are okay with that!

The NPCs are just standing there... not really doing much. Everyone is doing stuff!
Why not have them move around during the dialog, and adding some more movement with
the two who are talking, even if it is minimal

Gah I want to play the game and I don't understand what is going on

Great map

I don't think bolding important words is effective here. It is barely noticeable.
A different color would do well here.

Cool little intro thingie!

The text is very slow, even at 10. Seems to have a lot of pauses

These dudes are assaulting this girl right in the middle of the bar

I like the sound effects during dialog

The interaction with the characters is awesome so far

I am never a fan of the censored swearing. Make up words and stuff, it's fun! Like OH GUZZLEBUMP!

So it is much better to spam skills than regular attack. Hard problem to tackle, but something to consider. I admit, I haven't gotten too far so maybe this is addressed later.

How do you get music to transition into the fight seamlessly?

So far my biggest complaint is all the dramatic pauses in the dialog. Makes the
cutscenes take a lot longer than they should and doesn't allow the reader read
at their own pace and it is honestly making it so I can't enjoy or follow the
story - this has in fact inspired me to remove all pauses I have in my game,
and I do not have many! I moved the text speed to instant and it's still too
much for me. There is even pauses in the dialog, which seems intentional. Many
times I thought I could start playing and moving around, and nope. More dialog.
This is probably not what you want in your game, but have the characters do more
than stare at each other during a cutscene. Move around... bubble emotes. Anything!
Your world is alive! It'll liven up the dialog a lot more and give reason for some of the pauses.
I definitely think they need to be toned down. A lot of times a character gives
thought and nothing is happening on screen. I understand the pause and why you have it there,
but this is also a game and it annoys the player. Thought can be shown with text such as an ellipse, but use
it sparingly.

I need to ingest this in small chunks, I really like Donica, the dialog itself,
and the world. (I love acamedies such as FF8 and such, so it is cool.)
You are a better writer than me and for that I am jealous. I will update once I complete the demo.

Yeah, the dialogue is the biggest one for me to tackle--it's the highest priority (well--making the new sprites is number one as of now, but dialogue is being fixed at the same time, and will continue to be fixed until the next update.) The new sprites will (hopefully) fix a lot of them not doing much. It's a long process--but they open and close eyes, move their little arms, have little emotions over their heads, etc. From people that have played it so far--they all agree the dialogue is very slow, so that is very much changing on the next update.

For the music; I just have the songs match from non-combat (the song that's currently playing) and the battle song. Once battle begins, the song doesn't end.

I think--you've struck gold with making up swear words... I never once thought of that... I think I could come up with some good and funny ones.

Thanks for this--it really is my fuel to tell myself what needs to be cut/added. It's nice to see things through different perspectives. :D This is the best part of development--to see where my limitations are so I can fix them. With only my girl playing my game for a long time, it's very good for me to see reactions from others.

There really is a lot coming for the next release... including more maps, homemade music, and hopefully a lot more dynamic stuff (sorry, I just kinda woke up--my vocabulary right now is still forming, I should also brush my teeth because bleh.)

EDIT: I'll edit this post as needed.

So it's been a little while since I made an update! So--here goes.

For a little while--my pc has been acting up. Seems to crash a lot and physical memory is constantly being pushed into the 90 percentile range. Seems like it gets worse as time progresses. I've fixed a bit, but I might be having to move everything over to my girl's laptop if I want to continue development. Thankfully, everything is backed up in multiple places, so in case something goes wrong, I wont lose any (or little) progress.

Before the slowdown, I'd been overhauling many aspects of the game; from sprites to dialogue, and maps to combat. A lot of the feedback I'd gotten is that the game is interesting, especially the characters and their interactions--but dialogue speed is slow. That's all changing. I'd begun speeding things up and cutting unnecessary monologues, pauses and overall speeding things up.

While doing that, I'd been overhauling maps; adding more props and things to liven up the various locations players will visit. I've been creating things from more billboards to neon signs, and small things like trash, and bugs. For me--it's the little things that seem to catch a lot of attention.

The most tedious part of overhauling is definitely the sprites--as I've been creating the clothing, positions and actions myself, with the help of hiddenone's tall sprite templates, and sleepymachine's tall sprite edits. It's a ton of fun, but yes--tedious. Never surrender.

As for music--I've still be tackling it, slowly but surely. I have two songs in the works at the moment. The main battle theme and Longinus' theme. I've been writing the music on my piano and slowly progressing it over to soundtrap. I've had a bit of time to do that more lately, since the problems with my PC had been getting worse. Also, finishing up the piano accompaniment for the game theme.

Also, I found a wonderful artist in @Vanessa, who has created the four eternal party members for me so far. I cannot recommend her enough to anyone looking for a great artist. Sweet, and communicative; search her out if you're looking for amazing art.

Here's the team so far:

I've also had a lot of help from my bud, @Finnuval who has been painstakingly creating various concepts and gorgeous art pieces for me. He's given me a lot of feedback on story, characterization and direction--and I have nothing but good things to say about him and his help. Thank you so much, bro. You've single-handedly helped to guide my journey in directions I hadn't previously ventured down.

Take a peek at some of the things he's created for me.

This picture holds a lot of love from me--it was the first time I'd ever seen my characters drawn out. It was amazing to see them realized through the eyes of another. Words can't describe the feels it gave.
Ci17mN7.jpg
uQxDjPT.jpg

Sacrilege is good! At least when it looks like this.
tzkNX6Y.jpg

Next--I wish to make a special shoutout to @Grunwave. He plowed through the entire demo and has given me a lot of amazing feedback. I promise bro, I'll continue your game--I already got the permission to use my girl's laptop until further notice. An amazing pal, with great ideas. I would also like to thank others that have played it and have given feedback. For sure a shoutout to @punchybot for playtesting. Thanks for your feedback, it's been extremely helpful and I thank you for it.

I have a few updated images with new sprites and maps I'd also like to share. I've added many more props, trees, lighting, etc. As of now, these maps are complete, but I might go back and add things like shadows. Though you can't tell through the images, I've also added many more sound effects, sprite expressions and gestures and many more little things to add more of a feel to the overall experience.

Take a peek!

I'll be continuing development as soon as possible; however, I have a few demos to complete so that is on my top agenda for the moment. I'll continue with that when I wake up as it's already nearing 9:30am for me--but two last things.

My girl created this for me, for any potential pals, bros, and peeps that would like to show their support for RTLTS.

pDAMybi.gif

No pressure or anything; and only if you would want to. I won't lie though--if I ever saw anyone sport this--it'd bring a tear to my eye and a smile to my face.

Lastly; I have a wallpaper I'd like to share. I was being imaginative sometime back, and I created this. Wanted to share it with all of you. I've really had a lot of practice with gimp since I started using it more and more for game making. My old professors in college would be proud, I think.

Finally (even though I already said lastly--) I'd like to just say thank you to everyone. You're all the best. Love ya, 'til tomorrow.

-Sam

EDIT 1/12: The demo link has been brought down for now. Reason being; I'm working on re-releasing the demo with the added enhancements and changes. If you still want the current demo, you can find it at the website www.bugpowderassembly.com
