So, I'm still pretty new to RPG Maker XP, having only downloaded it a few days ago.

What I want to do is have an event play at the beginning of the game right after the player would press start, to give a bit of a backstory to the main characters of the game. However, I don't know how to do that. I've tried changing events' triggers to "autorun", but nothing ever happens.

Help?

Then you die something wrong, because an autorun event on the starting map is the correct way to go.

Can you give a screenshot of your event?

Sure.

The very bottom has a command that is "Exit Event Processing".

And that is one of your mistakes.
Exit event processing tells the engine to jump to the end of the event - where the autorun causes it to restart. And using this command as the last one never does anything because it only tells the engine to jump to the last line (where you already are)

instead, you need to switch off the autorun to another page, and that page must not be another autorun.

your second mistake is to condition the page to that self-switch. this means that this page is only allowed to run when the self-switch is active and not unless it is done so - usually that condition is set on the page that you want to switch off to, not on the first page.

and a possible third error is the page ordering - higest page number has highest priority, which means that if the conditions on the second page are fulfilled, the first page will never be executed.
