This game contains implied suicide and mean characters who encourage suicide. If you are sensitive to those or similar topics, you may want to skip this game. Please never give up hope!

SAD is a placeholder name, but the name it is holding a place for will never arrive. It can stand for "Social Anxiety Disorder", "Sorrow, Anger, and Doubt", "Smile All Day", "Salad? Ask Delilah", or anything you want. It might just be SAD.

I created this game for RPG Maker's 24th birthday Encounters of the Boss Kind contest, and I am honored that it won first place! This is a slightly updated version that mostly just fixes a bunch of obvious mistakes I overlooked because I was rushing.

You can download the current version here. I hope you enjoy it!

Story:

Teresa is a young woman for whom every day is harder than the last. But today will be different, for today is the day she will finally confess her love to her childhood friend, Morihinze!

...Maybe. With all these negative thoughts clouding her mind, Teresa is doomed to failure, just like always...

But as long as she has hope, she will keep on trying!

Features:
- A fairly unique setting.
- Despair.
- Hope.
- A cheesy love story (almost).

- A boss fight that will ideally require strategy to win, but it still needs a lot of refinement.

- Special battle mechanics: Teresa is unable to be harmed directly but panics when her allies fall; skills that become more or less effective the more targets they have; a skill that sets up an attack for a later turn, which may backfire if you put it off for too long; status effects that really work; gardening; TV/VCR repair; and more! (TV/VCR repair not available in all time periods.)

- May contain humor.
- Way too many references to all kinds of other things. I tried to keep them from being obstructive, so if you are not a fan of referential humor, please do not let this point scare you off! (But feel free to complain if they bother you!)
- No custom resources*, even though the contest is over. I think not using custom scripts is an interesting challenge!
*Aside from character generator characters, which I guess could technically be called custom resources. But since the generator is part of RPG Maker VX Ace, they are allowed.

To-do list (in no particular order):
- Redo the battle system slightly; I want to use the "Show Text" event for battle messages so they will not go away automatically. This will require doing all attack calculations through common events (not difficult, just time-consuming), which also allows a little more freedom for attack effects.
- Rebalance each character's skills as necessary.
- Almost completely redo each enemy's AI and skills.
- Add "effects" to every items. Two items (Equipment and       ) have "effects" so far.
- Remove a character's items from your inventory when she is defeated and replace them if she is brought back.- Add a button combination (probably shift+Z) to skip the intro. This will be done last due to the way I plan on implementing it.
- Extend the second bad ending (the one you get from losing the battle and giving up).
- Extend Actually implement the good ending. Please let me know what you think of (spoiler for the current ending)

ending the game by crashing it.

Known glitches:
- If you go through the intro text fast enough, one of the characters will not move properly. Even if I knew how to fix this, I would probably leave it because I think looks funny (and you get an Agility boost if it happens).

Okay, definitely going to have to give this a try later on when I'm not too busy. Just looking at your post, it appears like you had an amazing theme throughout the entire game while even finding a way to incorporate it into the boss fight itself. Very excited to find the time to try this out.

Edit: Took a quick peek at the actual project itself to see how you built the encounter itself, mostly so I can compare my style with other people (I used mostly common events and only one or two event pages on the troop itself in my entry)... and now I'm even more excited. Looks like you built-in a lot of interesting thematic mechanics. Didn't let it spoil my experience for later though so I didn't read in what they actually did.

I'm going to be putting out an actual blog post with more descriptions of why I selected the games I did as winners, but I'll just make a quick post here with a quick description of why this one won:

It completely and utterly took me by surprise. It took the concept I thought was going to be the contest, turned it on its side, but still fit all the guidelines anyway. The mechanics are really cool, unique, and INCREDIBLY thematic, and the boss fight is challenging. And it deals with a subject that is pretty complex in an interesting way.

I whole-heartedly agree with TF after finally playing it. The game is amazing. For however much I would've loved to have won first place in Encounters of the Boss Kind, this game definitely deserved it. Kumquat, you've done something awesome with the constraints of the contest and it should be applauded.

Bravo.

Edit: I loved the Nothings. Humorous, paradoxical, and a little philosophical all at once. There's no such thing as nothing (or is there?)!

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
How many parameters is 'too many'??
