'Sailor Moon: The Silver Millennium' is free fan-made RPG Maker VX Ace game created by TheMoonPrincess(the.silver.millennium.rpg AT gmail.com).

Battle monsters, gather allies, and protect the Solar System from evil in this prequel to the modern 'Sailor Moon' story.

The game play is standard JRPG style, story-driven with random encounters, turn-based front view battles, with loot and leveling.
This is an 'expanded universe' story, not an AU work and generally follows established franchise canon, with a large dose of non-conflicting fan-headcanon.

It's been in development since April 2014, is my first and only RPG Maker project. The game play and story are 100% finished, but it still need polishing and error-checking.

I thought that this looked interesting and went to download it - and then saw that although it is still not yet complete (I'm assuming that, as it's in Project Development) it is already 872Mb.  That is huge, enormous, massive.  As I have a slow internet connection at home, I am, therefore, passing on this for the time being.

Could I make a few suggestions to get the file size down?

If your music files are MP3, convert them to ogg vorbis using Audacity.  It's a free program and will typically reduce the file size to 25% of the original.

If you are not using the RTP, remove it, as that accounts for around 200Mb.

If you are using a lot of pictures and/or parallaxes, consider using tinypng  It reduces file size by 60%+ without loss of visual quality and while keeping full transparency.  This can be particularly useful for battle animations.  If you have even just the default animations you could still save around 30Mb.

Using these and similar techniques my last game has nearly 300 maps, 20+ hours of game play time, 65 music tracks, etc. etc. and still came in at under 200Mb.

Good advice, thank you!!! It *is* too big, I agree, but I've been hesitant to change every single song file on every map and each evented change at this point.

Going through and finding each one seems like a giant hassle, and if I miss one or make a mistake, the game will crash, right?

The RTP is in there at the request of many of my testers. People outside of the RPG Maker sphere have a hard time with it, don't understand that it's needed, etc, etc. no matter how careful my instructions are. In some cases, my game will be the only RPG Maker game a Sailor Moon fan might ever play... So, I'm catering to that set of people.

But the pictures, and parallax, I will take your advice for sure. Thank you!

There is no need to change any of the music events.  You change the music file itself.  Convert it and, as long as you keep the same title and remove the old MP3 version from the audio file, you shouldn't have a problem.  Try it with one music file and see how it goes.

A rare moment when my home internet was of decent quality, and so I downloaded it.  I haven't played very far (I haven't left the palace yet), so just some very brief comments.

I liked the opening cut scene; I think it works well.

I like your variable save screen images.

You certainly believe in rewarding exploration! But

Did you really mean to give +15 levels?  That is going to make a huge difference between players who find it and those who don't.
I'm not sure that the amounts of exp and coins given in the training room always reflect the comparative strength/difficulty of the various enemies.

Will all characters for all battles be making those mini screams when they act and when they're hit?  I think after a while this could become irritating.

The skill 'Heal' and 'Heal II' are on different skill menus.  Is that what you intend?  Also Heal II has a lower MP cost than Heal, which seems a bit counter-intuitive.

Back to file size.

Your graphics folder includes all Titles1 and Titles2 images.  You could delete the ones you are not using.

Your audio folder includes the default tracks Battle1 - 9, Dungeon1 - 9, Field1 - 4, Scene1 - 6, Theme1 - 5 and Town1 - 7.  Given how much custom music you are using, I would be surprised if you were using these 30 tracks.  If you're not, you could delete them.

Oh, wait, you decryped my game? Well, there goes all my hard work since April... I feel super discouraged now.

It's a reward for those who read the manga and know how important that room is, I suppose. There's something hidden like that for each solo/pair mission.
You're right, it doesn't seem balanced. Do you have any suggestions in particular?

The battle voices are a holdover from the only real Sailor Moon RPG for SNES. The Queen is more annoying than the rest.... I might get rid of her's.

It was a mistake, I'll fix it.

I could cut those out, I suppose. I'm not using them, but I'm TERRIFIED of creating a game-crashing error. The custom music I have can be cut down because I'm not using every last piece. Once again I'm just terrified of breaking it. I've tried using HimeWorks resourse checker script, but it is inaccurate and missed a few things, caused me to create a game-crasher error and my testers were super angry with me... I don't want to break my game, but I haven't found a fool-proof method of handling.

You send them a game to test for bugs, and they get angry when they find one? Your beta testers are weird, weird people.

That said, I'd like to download your game, but that file size is ungodly huge, I second the motion of taking the risk of reducing the size of your game.

I could show you some amazing email exchanges... (I'm trying to explain to someone right now why they can't steal the original sprites I made....) People are so toxic. It's been so hurtful and discouraging, so I though I would show the game to an RPG Maker crowd instead of a Sailor Moon fan-game crowd and see if it was beneficial to my moral. And low and behold it has been super helpful. I'm super grateful to all of you guys.

I'm trying to get it smaller, I'm really trying, but using tinypng on everything made it all look soooo bad. Reducing the music is the key, perhaps. I converted everything to ogg, but I still can't dip below 500mb.

If anyone could recommend a resource checker other that Hime's, that would help a ton.

I did not dycrypt it.  The audio folder is never encrypted, and can be seen by anyone.  There are, I believe, some complicated ways of not having that happen, but I'm not sure exactly how it's done, so can't explain it to you.  The actual game itself is encrypted.

I'd love to try too, but I would have to leave my computer on all day to download this!

I looked through your comments and I see you're really concerned about deleting something you need. You could take a look at this script: http://rpgmaker.net/scripts/201/code/ what it will do is allow you to keep playing even if a graphic or audio is missing. It will pop up a warning message and even tell you what the graphic is supposed to be but you can hit OK and keep playing that way.

It might be helpful because you could delete what you think you don't need and then replay and between you and the testers you can find out what resources you have to put back in.

It became a life saver when I restarted my game but wanted to leave some of the maps and scenes that I had already created in place but wasn't sure what files I needed.

I hope this helps you! Good luck with your game I can't wait to try it

The way I did this in my game was I first went through and made a list of every music file I used for a map, then for cutscenes, then for battles. Then, I removed everything else. Once that was done, I played the game from start to finish, and if the game crashed due to a missing file, I added it back in. Took a while, but it got my file size down from 728K to about 216K.

Well, not to play devil's advocate, but there's a general ignorance about how difficult it is too make a game, or resources for one, so that might lead to some inconsideration. Then again, they could simply be jerks. :p

500 mb is big, but still good progress, I would probably try it at that size.

If anyone could recommend a resource checker other that Hime's, that would help a ton.
The recommendations above me are all pretty good, as there is no other resource checker around. If you're sure that Hime's script is buggy, then let him know posting in his blog, threads or via PM. He'll probably help you solve any problems you have with it.

Good luck with your game. :thumbsup-right:

These are the points I noticed in the Training Room.

The Ogres have 100HP, and can go down with one hit.  They give 100 exp and 50 coins each.

The Security Robot (sorry forgot the HP, but much higher than the Ogre's) and take longer to finish off.  They can also dish out significant damage and with the paralysis skill brought me to a near death experience before paralysis wore off and I could defeat them.  But they too give 100 exp and 50 coins.  Compared to the Ogre, this should be higher.

Snakes have 400+ HP (480?) and give 310 exp and 70 coins each.  They can be finished off quite quickly and easily.

Ghosts have 1000HP and give 300 exp and 300 coins.  More difficult than the Snakes.  I would have thought that the exp needs to be higher than the snakes.  The number of coins seems over generous (but who am I to complain?  It means I can buy more items).

On a different note: I found the Red Rose.  Great item - but maybe too great for so early in the game?  The boost in stats that it gives is enormous.

Great rewards for exploration, and exploring is one of my favourite occupations in a game, so that pleases me a lot.  You've done well to train the player to wander off the obvious path.  I also liked the way you introduced the sci-fi elements (in the room off Serenity's bedroom).  Off now to Earth, though whether I shall get there today remains to be seen.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
