So I'm new here, nice to metchyas! I'm a lifelong RPG fan (played Dungeons and Dragons when I was a kid, got hooked on RPG video games soon after, favorites include Breath of Fire III, Final Fantasy VII, Baldur's Gate, Xenogears, Legend of Dragoon, and Attack of the Saiyans). I used to have RPG Maker 2003 way back when I was in collage, and found it to be fun though I never completed a project. The usual effect of getting distracted with new features. Last thing I was doing was playing with transformations and trying to script cutscenes into a more cinematic battle system (didn't get far). I also spent a few years studying computer programming when I was in high school. It's nothing to brag about but it means I intend to delve into the scripting myself to see if I can still manage it.
Anyways, just got RPG Maker MV for sale (half off for Memorial day) and it looks pretty alien compared to the old program, but I am glad to see side view battles are now part of the core system, which is what really brought me back. The character generator is impressive as well, though there aren't many resources for it (I assume there are plugins/DLC to fill in that gap, or that there will be). While I am a programmer by nature I'm not much of a graphic designer so I am always looking for some resources.
Anyways the software seems to have advanced a lot since the one I played so I am looking forward to trying to make something really nice this time around.
