The "hello" you use depends on the area you live in here. So here's a few:

"Hallo." - standard German, can be used anywhere
"Guten Tag." - also standard German (more like textbook German, really), can also be used anywhere as long as it's not morning or evening
"Moin./Moin moin." - northern Germany (and despite it meaning "morning" you can use it throughout the day!)
"Servus." - southern Germany, mostly Bavaria (some actually take it literally and translate the actual Latin word into German and day "Diener." instead; pretty informal though)
"Hi." - like the English "Hi"; in German this might be followed by your opposite asking "Wo?" (where?) because "Hai" in German means "shark"

Going by where I was born it would be: "Tja, läget?" ("ä" has a pronunciation somewhere between "a" and "e")

Or if we're to go by where I live now it's: "今日は、元気?" (Latin alphabet translation: konnichiha, genki?)

In Belgium we can say hello in flemish (=practically the same as dutch), french english and german. Since I live in the flemish part, here are some greetings used in Dutch:

    "Hallo", "hello", "hi", "hoi", "hey"

    Or

"Goeiemorgen", "Goeiemiddag", "Goeienavond", "Goeiendag" (= good morning, good midday, good evening and good day - you can also replace 'goeie' with 'goede' but it means the same)

Or - as some of my former teachers would say:

"Neem een toetsenblad, we doen een onverwachte test. Jullie hebben 10 minuten." (= Take a test sheet, we're having an unannounced test. You have 10 minutes to solve all questions)
