Hello, everyone--

I'm a first-time poster and a relatively new user of VX Ace (I've owned a copy for a few weeks now). I've pondered game-making for years now, and even taught myself rudiments of Python for that purpose, but I've come to the conclusion that acceptable programming skills are just not going to be achievable for me. Something like RPGMaker, on the other hand...

I've already completed my first learning project, a bite-sized game with about 3-7 hours of play time, and assuming it's approved at some point it should have a forum entry here (I've submitted it, but have yet to hear back).

I grew up loving Square games on the NES/SNES... starting with Final Fantasy, then moving on to Final Fantasy IV (or II, as we knew it) and VI (or III), and then Chrono Trigger... I was also really fond of Shadowrun (on both the SNES and Genesis), Secret of Mana, Lufia's Quest, Drakkhen, and so forth. Via emulators, I eventually played all the old SSI Gold Box games I'd missed as a child... as an adult I'm heavily addicted to Bethesda-style games (the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series).

I understand what you mean. Programming is fun, but it is NOT easy unless you have had a LOT of practice!
Personally I have rudimentary skills in Basic, BASH, and intermediate skills in HTML, and CSS. That means I can't do any scripting in RPGMaker though since it uses a variant of Ruby.

Yeah... I did BASIC programming in middle school (on the Apple II, back when dinosaurs walked the earth), some LPMud coding around the turn of the century, a lot of HTML, and a lot of database construction with Filemaker... so I have a pretty solid grasp of sifting through tables, databases, etc. What I still lack is that basic foundational understanding of computing and programming theory that all my friends in IT got when they were around 19. Heh. (Cries into beer...)

The silver lining is that I'm old enough these days to recognize that mastery of all human skill sets is not a practical goal in life, and that's it's okay to ask for help and to hire people with actual qualifications to do in a few hours what might take me weeks. I'm confident that a few more months and a few more short practice games will go a long way toward clearing up some of my ignorance.
