Hello, I am a fairly experienced coder. But, I have never used a language as complex as Ruby. Most of my game scripting involved simplified lua for video game mods and what have you. So now I feel like stepping into a new arena, if you will. To make a proper game. Add something to the world that has given me so much.

And, I came across the SCC::Construct module in Dekita's Spritesheet Control. I was fascinated.

So, erm, quick question... how exactly do I use it? Is it similar to the posing module? Are the outfits simply the name of the graphics file? Or do I need to add code and write new objects for each outfit? Is 42 really the meaning of life? Am I supposed to enter a script command in my events to set off a method or something?  I'm stumped here. Any help from a seasoned coder would be fantastic. As it would really help me get familiar with Ruby and how it works.

EDIT:

When I say SCC::Construct, I actually mean SSC::Construct, I blame my foreign accent.

I've moved this thread to Learning Ruby and RGSSx. Please be sure to post your threads in the correct forum next time. Thank you.

Please check the tutorials and topics in this forum where I moved your topic.

Unfortunately, I have additional info that you might not like...

What is called scripting in RM is not the same as what is called scripting in other engines - RM's eventing is more like the level of that is called scripting in other games.

Scripting in RM can better called programming, and Ruby/RGSS is a fully functional programming language - and in fact Ruby is considered one of the most simple programming language compared to say C++ or even Assembler (which is more difficult to program than C++).

I suggest you start by eventing (as a lot of eventing can use structures from the script part of the engine), then go to the Ruby tutorials in this section before trying to analyse more complex programs made by the better programmers around here (which Dekita is one of)

I apologise for my mistake.

I have done plenty of eventing already, I'd say I have about a year's experience. What I am hoping to do now that I have gotten grips on the basics of the engine is to learn the advanced things, and, hopefully, one day, release an actual game.

And I wasn't sure if I could call it programming. But I certainly know Ruby can be used for programming. From my impression of it, it seems to be just as impressive as Javascript, considering the cross platform compatibility and the fact that it can be used to write most applications.

Happy to hear you like the construct module I wrote.  That was just a little something extra i done for jesse while I was writing up the other scripts :)

I kinda felt that having a complete character construction system in place would be helpful for quickly testing characters (Jesse (@PVGames) made a new spritesheet design and loads of outfits in his WildWest/Steampunk pack ~ which is what the construct module assumes is available)

Essentially, the construct script uses notetags from the actor and armors noteboxes ~ these notetags setup which image should be shown when a certain item is currently equipped.  If you look in the actor 1 and armor 1's notebox (from the demo that comes with the SSC scripts inside) you will see examples.

You are correct in stating that the outfits are the name of the graphics file; however, they should all be placed within the 'Graphics/Characters' folder ~ i'm sure there was something about sub-folders too. like, for the image 'Steam_Feet_1', it will check for a folder named 'Steam_Feet' and then find the image within the folder. ~ Cant remember if I changed that or not, its been a while :p

but yea, it does kinda require you to be using the pvgames steampunk spritesheets ~ or similarly arranged spritesheets. :)

Recognition +1 ^_^

I think I just leveled up...

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
