The game crashes as soon as I try to enter the first town. Is this all you have so far? it's fine if you do, I just really wanna know.
You probably haven't downloaded the correct demo, he has been updating the first post most of the time but he might have forgoten. Just download the link on the last post, for me it works fine until the second boss.

Speaking of the second boss. You might want to give him some more attacks other than normal attack and the fire attack. I assume he is just at a test stage for now. Other than that... Ogev seems to come to just quit being minister a bit too quickly... He might want to have a little something happen to him, I get it was his fault and whatnot but it seems like he is just running away from the problem and leaving the towns in a terrible position.

A very, very good point. I admit it all felt a little bit too rushed. There is going to be an expanded sequence, the next major version of the demo will have it included. The dialog will be adjusted to reflect this.

As for the boss battle, itself, for right now I'm not overly concerned with battle mechanics until I can get the story outlined, for the most part -- and I'm working each iteration depending on how far along I'd written the narrative.

Are you running the latest version? It's working fine, now; the problem you're running into was probably because when I deployed the game into the output folder, it didn't seem like it was deleting older version of the game's files, so when the actual game would be run files would be missing as older versions of the demo called for them.

...At least, I think that's how it worked. Regardless, I deleted the old output folder and redeployed it, re-packaged it in a fresh Enigma VB project, and re-uploaded the whole thing.

EDIT: Did a quick change before leaving for work. Casilion has been completely remapped, so that it looks like as it does on the World Map. Let me know if there are any errors and I'll get right on top of it as soon as I get home from work!

SCION Demo v0.33

I really apologize about the amount of updates I have to do, if I had more time during the week to do proper quality control things would definitely be a lot smoother!

EDIT EDIT: New "build" deployed. Found an error where when leaving Namric's house, the player is teleported somewhere completely different, as a result of the map change.

As for the amount of updates I think its actually good you do it like this its a "nightly build" kind o thing and helps you get quick feedback on how you are doing, then again that depends on how you like to do things.

I regret to inform that this weekend I wont have much time to play your demos, then again I have replayed it so much I kinda just skip halt the text and it only takes me like 10 minutes to play till the second boss.

I do try to play them from start to finish but since sometimes you end up breaking progression by acident I have about 4 saves on diferent stages so I might just go over the final parts of the demos you put out in the next few days

I haent payed this one yet but I will do so as soon as I can.

Downloaded the latest version. Right after I talk to the witch with blue hair, I'm suddenly trapped outside, in a part of a house. It's bizarre.

I thought I'd fixed that for this version. I probably forgot to update the first post with a recent version.

I have downloaded the 0.33 demo, not sure if it's the latest version as there are many builds described in the opening post with 0.5 or 0.51 but I see no links on those, anyways about the game, a few things I'd like to point out:

1) TOP PRIORITY: Please get rid of the MV default OK sound and change it to something more tolerable and less irritating. BLIBLIN, BLIBLIN, BLIBLIN, BLIBLIN, aaaarggh. Not sure what the RMV devs were thinking but replaying that sound over and over could be used as capital punishment for murderers.

2) The 2 bats encounter in the first room is a bit unforgiving. Ok, I had a game over on it because of a string of misses. You may wanna consider removing that from the first room at least so that you're more likely to face them at level 2, when there's a lot more room for error. 2 bats at level 1 are harder than the orc boss at level 3.

3) Drive seems to deal less damage than the normal attack, is this intended? Sounds a bit underpowered if it costs SP only to have a guaranteed weaker hit.

4) The orc said he went berserk and had increased damage and resistance, but I noticed no change and kept on hitting and being hit for the same amounts of before.

5) This main character must be affected by schizophrenia based on much he talks to himself when he's alone. Maybe some of the monologue could be changed to thoughts instead? I don't know about you, but I don't really talk when I'm alone.

6) After recruiting the mage I got stuck inside the walls of a house and could not progress further.

7) In the first dungeon, after you fall down the hole, if you try to climb back up you can get on top of the walls of the room. Nothing major, but I doubt this is intended.

Still, I have to say I have enjoyed it. Except for the OK sound. (Though I'm starting to think this will become something I'll get used to with the new influx of RMV games)

Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the honest assessment! All of the issues that you've pointed out are being worked on rioght now. I'm working on the damage / healing formulas as a whole to see what works best.

Eventually I intend to replace all audio assets but for right now I'm getting the basic framework of the game down before I move forward with any significant asset updates.

As for the main character talking to himself...Yeah, don't think I'd be classified as "schizophrenic" but I definitely do talk to myself a lot, especially when I'm playing video games -- even more especially when I'm working on this project.

GAME UPDATED

Moving forward, I'd decided to go by weekly updates as this project is taking up a ludicrous amount of time, and I want to work better on scheduling myself to be able to focus on my actual work, while also having enough time to play games on my own. With the amount of time I'd spent on this, it's starting to feel like a full-time job -- but that doesn't mean I'm not having fun with it!

I've worked a lot on the game since Friday, and play-tested it as much as I could on my own time. A lot of things have also been changed around, so please do me a huge favor and start a new save file (because I know ArcherBanish has been running off of save states) in order to play the demo from the very beginning. This version is coming close to the end of Act I of the story, and I've plans to encorporate up to 12 Acts in total of varying lengths.

My Road Map past this point is the following:

  • Trade RTP for original assets. I'd already started on this by swapping out musical cues for BGMs I'd purchased, but my plan is to have a completely original art style for sprites, characters, animations, side-view battlers; so on, and so forth.
So here it is, Demo v0.41!

So what's changed?

  • All RTP Music Cues have been replaced, except for the main theme which is still being deliberated on.
  • The story has been expanded past the Forest boss battle, bringing it closer to the end of Act I.
  • Battle System changed slightly as I'm now using Yanfly's Battle Core
Some known issues

  • Because I'm lazy and need to get to bed, this demo version starts the main player character off with the class that gives them the Mend ability, which makes the tutorial battle meaningless unless you didn't originally notice the ability.
  • Possible scene bugs in certain areas.
Other than that, I don't think there's a whole lot wrong with the demo.
What's to be expected with the next demo?

  • Completion of Act I of the storyline.
  • Possible battle system change.

I apologise not writing anything sooner but hey I am finished with my bachelor's degree now so yay.

I did play the demo a few days ago and I must say I do enjoy most of the changes:

General Things:

  • I enjoyed the music changes however there are a few completly silent moments that need to be fixed, otherwise I think the music is well chosen overall.
  • I noticed you changed the conversation with the town mayor to not include an option to ask about the current situation right away. I tought it worked well before but it isn't much of an issue.
  • The new map of the starting town feels wierd, namelly the completly inacessible areas and the lack of doors, maybe the doors are on the other side or something but it looks a bit odd to me.
About the Story:

I enjoy what you did for the story after the battle and the alterations you made to the character you fight, it does get you intregued for what comes next.

Also I do like that Olev doesn't say "I'm out!" right after the boss fight, I think it does make for a more interesting situation overall.

Also love gustaf as the general.

About the battles (because as you said you aren't paying much atention to the fighting and mostly the story.)

I did enjoy the changes you made to the boss battle however it makes the boss actualy deal less damages and be less of a treath in stage 3. Also he regains allot of hp making him more of an anoyance at this stage than anything else since because you have the pump, unless you play extremly badly you are impossible to defeat. (In fact its preaty much impossible to lose a fight in this game unless you are distracted, but this comes down to more personal preference, I will be putting my prototype in this forum soon too and if you play it you will see how hard fights are in that, it just comes down to personal preference)

To finish up I have to say keep going. I love how the game is comming along and I am sure you have alot of work ahead of you but I hope you keep with it.

Downloaded it but I have only played past the first town where you are camping. I like the story and the combat so far though i was disapointed i could not go to the forest but i guess that its still in development. I will give a more thorough description of my experience later.

I haven't played this yet, but I am intrigued based on what I've read so far... but I am very curious about your comment about using an licensed song from a Playstation RPG... How exactly did you manage to get a legit license to use something like that?

I didn't and said licensed material is no longer in the game.

Gotcha, I didn't catch that! Your original post still refers to it! I really was just curious, because the best I've ever been able to pull off was getting permission to use a micrograph that was published in an online science journal. I once tried reaching out to Square-Enix (In Japanese, no less) to ask about licensing a track from Chrono Cross, but they never even replied. Bastards.

Where did you purchase your music from? I love your game so far I was hoping to buy some resources for my project.

I've mixed and matched assets from the Cinematic Soundtrack asset pack and the Adventurer's Journey series.

I'm sorry I haven't updated in a while! I've been very focused on real life, I got brought on full-time at the job I was previously a temp contractor at so I've just been focusing on getting things together.

Suffice it to say, I haven't really been working on this project a whole lot. I kind of feel like there isn't much that I can do before making an attempt to put together some custom assets, even though I'd fully intended on finishing Act 1 of the story for the purposes of the demo. So, while I figure out how I'm going to update my visuals, I'm going to work on completing Act 1 so I can at least have the full demo finished -- and after Act 1 is completed, my focus from then on will just be to work on the rest of the game. The demo will be periodically updated to test systems changes, and eventually (hopefully, fingers crossed) to showcase the graphics.

So I did some work, mostly focusing on finalizing the plot beyond the first act before moving on with actual development, but I did a test for Parallax Mapping and, well, I'm pretty proud of what I'd done.

It's not a lot at all and I've got a lot of practice to do, but it's a good first step towards becoming a bit more self-sufficient.

Took you long eneugh! I've been activly waiting(not sure how that works but hey) for you to update this!

Can't wait to see what happens next in the story!

The paralax map looks preaty good too. I do have a question though. Is the lighting part of the paralax bellow or is it another image added on top of thatby a script?

So a quick update! I'm at work right now so I'll edit this post to be a bit more detailed when I get home back to my computer.

I still don't really have the capability of developing my own assets so finishing up Act 1 for the demo is going to be a bit difficult as the idea I'm going for requires some original sprite-work. So in the meantime I am working on expanding the leveling areas -- I'm finally starting up work on adding the forests and such.

I'll provide updated Screenshots and such when I get back home; I'll likely have the next demo version released sometime this week.

@ArcherBanish

The lighting is a part of the overlay layer, the candle itself is just an event which I'm working on making lighting for.

RMMV
It's nice to see someone else making an RTP game just to get acclimated with the engine also! That's exactly what I'm doing also! This looks like it'll be enjoyable to play. I'll have to tryout the demo when I get home this evening.
