Hey all,

I was wondering how many people make use of screen tints? And if you do, how so?

I know that some people use them for time and a day/night mechanic. If so, how many times a day do you change it?

But I was wondering if people have used it differently. I imagine it's used in caves etc, if people want to make it really dark and have a lantern type effect. I know I'm planning on having the screen tiny slightly red when the player is down to 20% on health in battles, and was curious to see what other uses people have for the tool.

@Poryg Thanks aha, but I know how to use them, I was just curious about how people use them in their own projects. ^^

Aside from telling the time, it can be used like ... the flashback scene where all of the colors are grey.

I use the terrax plugin for lighting, so I make use of its tint plugin command instead of MV's in-house variant so I can use it with light sources. The general idea's the same though. That said, I tend to use tinting a lot for 1) time of day (passes on overworld, stops in towns/outside areas), 2) darker dungeon themes, 3) mood lighting and other such things in houses--just enough darkening to show light sources a bit.

There's a lot of things you can do with screen tinting, too. I once used it to give a couple maps a tiny hint of gray, so that the world would look deader and more stark. I'm next going to use a reddish tint for a level that is on fire, to give it a glow from the flames.

A lot of triple A games use the same tech to differentiate zones in their game; giving something a unique color pallete. WoW is a big example of this. It's really noticeable when flying from one zone to another, heh. But it really works when you're in there.

I use them for a lot of different purposes.
  • Environments: For example heavily reducing the Red and Green in a dark cave lit by blue crystals (or Green and Blue in a dark cave lit by candles)
  • Special Effects: For example tinting the screen white-green (and then slowly fading it) after being hit by an avalanche, or tinting it blue after a blue slime explodes all over a character
  • Readability: Darkening the scene onscreen so that the player can see important text that is displayed in front of it
  • Flashbacks: Sepia tinting is usually a good way to make it very clear that the scene is a flashback

So far I've used them to make darker caves, flashback scenes (gray tint) and night time tinting

I don't use screen tint very much, but if I do, it's to make things look more grey, or in some cases a slight blue-ish tint for nighttime scenes or in the cold, or a more orange tint for mornings or for warmth.

Our latest feature is an interview with... me?!

People4_2 (Capelet off and on) added!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
