This is the best time to troubleshoot anything~ switch out your mouse and keyboard with someone elses and see if it fixes that. I can't think of anything going wrong especially with a fresh install of windows 8.
edit: did you also install whatever came with your mouse and keyboard? that may have been the culprit. You should let windows 8 install its own firmware for those two and see if it works.
