I am creating a commercial game, and I know that a lot of games have 'achievements' that the player can do to increase the game. To be honest, I don't do achievements, because of all the lame ones I have seen from professional companies like some of the following made up, but could easily be real achievements.
YOU BOUGHT A POTION achievement
YOU DEFEATED THE FIRST BOSS achievement
You know things you were going to do at some point of the game anyway, and from what I have seen they rarely extend the game play. As a matter of fact, it seems that a lot of professional companies don't really care for them, either. This could explain why the achievements are so lame and when they put their games on Nintendo, Who doesn't have a policy of achievements like the other two, it may or may not have achievements. So the question is: Should we or even someone like me, go out of their way to add achievements in the game and what might those achievements look like? Should they offer some sort of physical reward (like a special item) for achieving that goal?
Example: You discovered all the treasure chests in the Lost Forest (Reward: A rare potion)
If you ask me, what my gamer score is, I couldn't tell you and I'd have to look on my Xbox to show you how little I care.
