Story

Showdown is a story centered around Ulrika and her relationships with Ralph and Dalph.

As a teen, Ulrika was discovered wandering in the desert. She has no memories of the events that brought her to the desert, only that she woke up being cared for by a man in a dark, hooded robe. She passed out and the next thing she knew, she woke up in the care of the owner of the saloon, who gave her a job when she recovered.

Her only clue to her rescuer’s identity was a lock of red hair sticking out from the hood of the robe. Ralph is the only man she’s ever seen around town with red hair, so she assumes that he was her savior that day, even though they’ve never spoken of it.

One day she witnesses Dalph (whom she’s always assumed to be evil, thanks to what Ralph has told her) do something, well, not-so-evil. Maybe even heroic in fact. This causes her to reevaluate her views of Dalph and Ralph, question who really saved her that fateful day and ultimately, decide where her loyalties lie. Which path will she choose?

Features – As this is a fun side project for me and a way to help build up graphical western-themed content for the community, it will pretty much be a standard RPG game. World exploration, battling some new enemies (rattlesnakes anyone?) and letting the story unfold. I will likely include some minigames and/or puzzles, though I have no idea what yet.

Characters

Ulrika - Tough, bear-punching Ulrika stars as the heroine of this story.

Sheriff Ralph – In this town, Ralph rules. Or at least, lays down the law.

Dalph – The villain? Maybe.

Deputy Mrrn – Yep, you read that right. Mrrn is featured in this story as Sheriff Ralph’s right-hand- errr, cat?

Other RTP characters morphed into cowgirls and cowboys. Who would you like to see and what role do you picture them in? Suggestions are welcome.

Setting

The setting takes place in a desert area of our beloved RTP world. Because of the desert climate, the townsfolk here have adopted quite the western feel to their little town. General stores, saloons, and horses and wagons abound.

Screenshots

Please keep in mind that other than the Western pack, there are little to no resources for a western themed game. That is a primary purpose of this game - to increase the resources. But that means I have to make them. So yes, these maps are a bit bare. But I'm working on it, so please be patient with me!

Input Welcome

This is a project with a few purposes:

First, to help contribute Western-themed content to the community.

Second, to build on the story of Ulrika/Ralph/Dalph, one that has come to mean something to this community.

Three, to create a fun unique take on some of our RTP heroes and villains. (And of course, one not-quite-RTP villain. Yes, you Dalph.)

Due to this being a contribution to the RPGM Web community, input and ideas are welcome. If you have any ideas for features or mini-games or character ideas, please feel free to share. I cannot promise the use of them, but they will be taken into consideration.

Does Ulrika do the can-can dance?  If not, I will be happy to help fix that.

Not sure it's quite that amazing, but thanks! Hopefully it will just be a lot of fun for everyone.

Not yet, but I just might take you up on that offer. :D

Dalph now needs to change his avatar to match the western Dalph sprite, as a form of advertisement and to further the purposes of developing western resources. As for suggestions, Bennett should be in this game, the Bennett from subclassia's vx demo; that personality would fit better and thus be even funnier in a western setting I think. I also second letting PaladinThug sprite the can-can.

Well, I started writing this out as a story and Bennett already appears in it, as well as Natalie. I forgot to mention them. They are very minor roles at this point, but they are there.

I've gotten Naia into the game. And on the list I've got Oscar, Rick, and Ernest.

Really, I'd like to do as many of the RTP characters as will allow, even if they only have NPC roles.

All of the above Scythuz? (I'll do my best anyway!)

I posted this in GMD, but I thought I would add it here for those who don't follow that thread. I made a mockup of the title screen tonight. I might play around with the actual title a bit but I'm not sure. What do you guys think? I like things simple, but would it look better if it stood out a bit more?

Haha, I was wondering why Dalph's avatar changed to him as a cowboy.  :guffaw: Funnily enough I was actually considering creating a Cowboy Sprite for the April Restaff. I'll Send it your way once iv'e done it mlogen if you want it. Also, another funny coincidence, I created some Dalph Sprites myself that should be featuring in the next Restaff, along with a top secret Sprite I also created for the Restaff.

I just realized that the titlescreen is a real joy for my eyes...I assume the girl that is riding the horse is...you know who (no, not Voldemort!).

Thanks Dalph! I just updated the picture at the top of the thread - I thought it was nicer. And yes, that's why I went with that image, so easy to imagine her riding across the plains!

And that makes me wonder... is The-One-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named a mentor of yours? ;)

Okay, I would love some feedback:

Weapons: Strictly western (primarily guns) or a mix of western/traditional? And if a mix, keep the traditional weapons traditional or give them more western sounding names?

Oh, and someone (haven't decided who yet) WILL have a lasso as a weapon!

No Gunblades.

There are a lot of western weapons aside from hand guns, if you plan on having a native american characters or have a cowboy use a melee weapon like a foil or a machete.

I didn't mean literally combining two weapons into a new one when I said mixing. I meant say, having guns, knives, some swords along with things like staffs and axes or whatever.

I guess though a lot more of them transcend genres than I realized though (like swords; I have so little brain function tonight). But in that, would it be best to keep the weapons consistent with the true time period of the American west or not worry about that so much and just make whatever seems to fit the game?

And for the record, I am not planning on this being set in true American west, but more a "western region" of the RTP world. (Whatever that is.)

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
